From the wiki:

The special edition comes with a 64-page art book, soundtrack disc, and a two-sided pillowcase featuring the playable characters from the game.

Yeah.

Yikes. Do the Japanese really want the world to think that this sort of stuff is what they are all about? Japan has a complex (and not very nice at times) history and culture. I am not one to yearn for the days in which a "God-Emperor" ruled over peasants and issued fascist laws, and I am certainly not that big a fan of the "old" Japanese culture, in which parents had total control over their child's lives and there was little freedom of expression....

Yet when I see this sort of stuff, I get the impression that Japan is going off the deep end. They've become seriously weird over the past 10 to 15 years. There are entire groups of children who now refuse to go outside their room or speak to anyone for years and it's.... tolerated?

I'm not saying that all of Japan is crazy - it's still one of the safest places in the world (although not entirely safe), a very developed nation, and a world leader in electronics, glassware, laboratory and medical equipment and many scientific disciplines. In many ways it's still more sane than a lot of other countries.

Still.... when stuff like this is starting to get popular, when you've got people marrying cartoon characters, and when you've young girls who dress up like French Maids routinely, when they are not french and not maids, it's the sign that something in Japan's psyche is starting to crack, and crack badly.

Of course, there's rampant sexualization and insanity in the West as well. To think I'd see the day where brazen criminals are OPENLY celebrated as celebrities.... well, it came as quite a shock to me. It's just that I used to think the Japanese would continue being the stoic, polite people they became after WWII, that they would continue to nurture the new national character that built a war-ravaged nation into what is now the third-largest economy in the world. And now I see them beginning to go off the deep end like so many other nations. Call me an old fuss-pot if you must (I'm only 24 years old), but this sort of stuff is just REALLY WEIRD to me, and to a lot of Japanese folks that I've talked to in the university. Many of them have decided to move from Japan precisely because it's starting to get seriously strange. I'm just not used to seeing sexualized cartoon characters. Something about the entire concept seriously disturbs me. I was tolerant of Anime before, and I still read Manga from time to time, but I'm finding myself increasingly disturbed and worried about the blatant sexual power fantasies that many anime and manga series are starting to become. It freaks me out. Seriously.

At least they still take Science and Mathematics seriously. I suppose I can be grateful for that.

That's like taking every crazy story out of Florida (or any other state criticized for having a ton of crazy stories coming out about it), adding in all the crazy overly sexual super-hero characters and weird fetishes that exist in the US and asking if that is what we want representing ourselves. I'm pretty sure that this is not representative of the whole.

I mean we end up with this kind of stuff in mainstream advertising.

I'm not sure which is more strange, but I suspect the correct answer is both.

Holy slippery slope Batman! That's one hell of a wall of text! Japan isn't fucked up based on anime girls. They're just banking on Otaku who would spend a hundred dollars on a 3 episode DVD of a 24 episode anime series. They know the audience and they know what makes money. Otaku are still looked down upon over there I hear, so to say that stuff like this is "popular" really needs some context. But I'm no Japan expert so I'm not gonna talk like I know what it's like over there just cause I know some thin snippets of information and hearsay. Nor should you.

Playing devil's advocate here but I seriously doubt most people around the world are defining their view of Japan by crappy, games comics or cartoons that are somewhat to fully pornographic. Just like I don't think most people in the world define their view of The States through a bunch of weird shitty porn featuring real people doing all kinds of disturbing shit. I know I don't.

@Korolev: Stuff like this has always been popular there. It's just recently that games like these gets out of their nation easier through channels like steam, marketplace and psn. Wherever in the world, if there's a market for it, there's money to be had.

For the love of god can you please stop quoting the guy who wrote a wall of text. Hitting reply does the same thing and we get more than 6 comments on the page.

All these pseudo pedophiliac games have me starting to be a little suspect of Jeff's mental well-being...

God damn it... Go the fuck away anime.

Also, this seems like a perfectly competent shooter for people who are into that sort of thing.

Just download the Rayman Origins demo if you want a good Gradius rip-off level.

All this Quick Look does is reaffirm my belief that everything anime is terrible.

Agreed.

Anyway, this was a pretty awful game even without all the pervy shit. But Vinny and Jeff's commentary was gold.

Also, really wish people would stop generalising all anime with this crap. It's like calling all live-action TV bad because you just saw an episode of Jersey Shore.

this game is more disgusting than the penn state scandal. why? because it's legal and shouldnt be.

Posted by Jonnyflash80

Come on Namco Bandai! I thought you were classier than this. This kind of thing reflects poorly on the video game industry as a whole. Why does a side scrolling shooter need to have under age anime girl cleavage in it, besides pandering to the creepers out there?

I agree with what you are trying to say, but too be fair, Japan on average has way crazier real people porn as well. You can trust me I have a porn addiction I know these things. Mad eels and incest n' shit bro.

This is just so sad, if I could pick another race than human to belong to I would.

I actually had an epiphany thanks to this though. Most guys when they're around thirteen, start objectifying women (unless it's taught earlier by a role-model), I'm guessing because it's genetically what we're evolved to do around that time.

However I can't think of a single woman I've objectified, at eight I clearly remember having girl friends that as an eight year old I respected as much as I could. At 13 the whole puberty thing made me lose most of my old friends since they started acting like assholes. At 17 I had mostly girl friends and a real girlfriend, same at 22, I'm 28 now.

Only thing I can think of why it never happened to me is because I have parents who actually parented me, giving me a great set of values to live by, including not caring about sex, race or sexual preference and so far I've only ever judged people as individuals.

My only prejudice actually is religious people, and that's my own, not even my parents think it's anything wrong with most of the world claiming they could medically be diagnosed as schizophrenic. Only reason I have that prejudice is because if a person can believe something purely on faith and no empirical evidence then yes, I will judge them in a negative fashion.

As much as I loathe fanservice like what is found in Otomedius, I watched the video anyway because Jeff's derision and tired sighs of the gameplay in these sort of games always matches up with my feelings. I have a ton of friends who love these games god know's why and it makes me feel better knowing someone I admire doesn't.

That and his reactions are always hilarious. "Otomedius stands for, uh, freedom and anime pasties." "That's a lot of double sided tape."

It's definitely not the worst part. Everything about this game looks pretty terrible, though.

I went through all the comments searching for the guy (I know you're out there) who would defend this game to the death, scream that you don't understand it and haplessly try to explain that it's based on a deep and interesting story with great characters.

Sadly he's not arrived yet. Maybe my Internet isn't working right.

Posted by OneManX

Yeah... that's what Japan does, only need to watch like one ep of Girls Bravo and trip down the Harem Anime Vice page to understand... They like boobs, and as a dude, you'd think that would be a problem, then you remember these girls are like High school, at the oldest... so

Anime?

Posted by SuperWristBands

@Insectecutor: lmao. Maybe something could be said for it's gameplay. I don't know all that much about Gradius games but no one can defend the "freedom and anime pasties". A person can like them or be fine with them, but not defend them :p

@Gremmel: It's like you want me to hate you.
You first tell us you're a paragon of virtue and equality, and cite a good parenting as that reason, as if most people, who simply aren't as 'good' as you (and you are saying that you're an exceptional case) had shit parents.

And then you tell us that you have a prejudice against ALL religious people because they place importance in faith? Because you know, billions of people are the same, and faith is inherently a 'bad' thing.

Every single part of all these statements is either self-important, uneducated or god damn wrong.

I haven't even watched the video yet, I just felt compelled to tell you that your post is one of the most infuriating and moronic I've ever seen.

I don't know how you got all of that out of this quicklook that was intended to be funny, but I would stop taking life so seriously man.

Also making broad negative generalizations about your peer group and at the same time commending yourself for your life of moral purity whilst interacting with the fairer sex is a lil' bit weird.

While I certainly enjoy listening to other people's perspectives objectification exist inherently in the concept of sexual preference. You can sit on your high horse all you want, but whenever you weigh the merits of someones physical attractiveness and what that means for you, you're objectifying them. The important part is being polite about it and also weighing the merits of their other attributes as well.

Women do it as well, spend a year or two as a gymrat then go to the bar, the beach, hell even the library and see how many more women will start conversations with you. The objectification of women is far more prevalent in media, because we live in a male dominated society. Though I would agree males in general do inherently have more possessive base instincts.

In the end it exists deal with it, most people like being objectified to a degree, what are you doing when you're telling someone they're beautiful or using dirty talk during sex. Think about it.

Finally I don't know why you brought religion into this, but I generally I think it's fair to say that people who are dutifully religious, tend to objectify(sexually at least) the opposite sex less, considering that it happens to be a core tenet of many faiths.
