But you also like Kenji, so your opinion doesn't count and it never will!

You definitely aren't invited to the manly picnic.

I remember hearing on waring huge podcast, that one of these dating sims S.O.S button. When you push it your in-game girlfriend will convince real life you not to kill yourself. Then there was a real resort promoting "couple's weekends." but the couple was you and your in game girlfriend.

I think you're talking about Love Plus+.

@kingzetta: And promptly, all the faith I had built up for the people who usually play these games, shattered into a million pieces.

So I've never played a visual novel before. I never really saw the appeal. It seems weird calling them games at all.

I'm going to read through the whole thing but, dude, you should really play the Ace Attorney games.

The Ace Attorney game always looked cool. I would have played them. But I just never got around to it.

I want to second this, all the games minus the terrible Edgeworth entry are some of my favorite games of all time. The writing is great and the translation was handled with care replacing Japanese jokes/pop culture references with stuff English speaking folk would get (you know, like singing the fresh prince of bel-air theme), it's phenomenal.

Also it's nice that you gave the game a chance, it's something more people on the internet need to do and stop staying inside their comfort zone. There is a lot of amazing/crazy games out there if people are willing to give them a shot.

My favorite thing about Love Plus was the antipiracy measures they used. If you pirated a copy then none of the women would ever love you - eternally stuck in the friend zone.

I was talking more about adding those naked pictures as long as I censor the nudity. I missed quite a few good lines because you could see titty.

Yes and no. I had some fun with her route because of all the cool characters you meet (Akira is an adult Naoto, Hideaki being...something..., Jigoro managing to be a horrible dad who knows exactly how Hisao sucks, etc.), but that final choice was kinda crap. You still get all her character development, but for some reason, absolutely none of the conflict.

Well it's one time only grant of around 10,000 dollars. Moving there would cost more, then you gotta romance a lady, then you have to raise the kid. No such thing as a free puppy, is what I'm saying.

@kingzetta: But if you want to move there anyhow, it's 10,000 bonus bucks. Seems like a Win-Win to me.

Hopefully with this and the rumors of Steins;Gate getting a US release, more quality visual novels can make their way over here. It would be neat to see the visual novel genre take off more and reach a broader audience, but quality visual novels are of course required for that too happen.

The only dateing sim I've played is  thousand-arms for the ps1.
I think it's the best ps1 RPG ever.

I'm going to give it a try, it's my first time with a visual novel.

Posted by Cloudenvy

@Hector: Good luck! I hope you enjoy it!

Posted by MikkaQ

I dug most of Phoenix Wright for the fun courtroom shenanigans, but in general found the 'gameplay' to be super lacking. The investigation scenes draaaaaagged, Basically, I don't think I'm gonna try a visual novel anytime soon. Especially given that Ace Attorney had more game to it than most VNs.

I guess I just don't see the point, they look like cheap motion comics except they couldn't even afford the motion. I'd rather watch a movie or read a book because they're both better at storytelling than games are or will be for yeaaaars. I come to games for an interactive experience and there's just not enough there to play with,

............Fucking play Katawa Shoujo. Now.

Posted by Cloudenvy

@MikkaQ: The game part isn't so much interactivity, but more that there (normally) are many diverse routes which changes significant aspects of the story.

I find that to be the main appeal of VN's outside of the story and storytelling.

Posted by TobbRobb

@MikkaQ: Dude! I know this great book, it has a lot of picturesm but it's 99% text. The characters are endearing and well written, I think you might like it. BOOK

I hope you actually realise what a Visual Novel is before comparing it to books.

thanks for the read. i will try this game now

I really don't like Shizune. She's part of the feminist conspiracy, man.

Posted by TwilitEnd656

Pretty much. Now get out there and start exploring some new visual novels, like... Swan Song's a nice (or rather, depressing) tale of six individuals after a massive earthquake leaves the city in ruins, trying to survive in a harsh winter environment.

I know what a visual novel is. They're nothing like traditional novels. The narrative style is completely different, and is mostly composed of dialogue. Imagine reading a novel that was just dialogue... it would be awful! Plus like most\all games, it's written at a pretty simplistic reading level, which is fine for the purposes they serve, but it's not really what I'm looking for when I sit down to read something, either.

That's kinda been my issue, really. They're like choose-your-own-adventure books with a lot of pictures. That can be fun, but also not what I want when I want to sit down and play games.

Basically the problem is they're not particularly great at being books, and not particularly great at being games, and since I have such limited time for both... eh I just find myself reading or playing things dedicated to their format, let's say.

Posted by RE_Player1

I tried it. I got with the blind girl and the girl with no legs. I thought some lines and conversations were well written but the majority was either annoying or laughingly bad.

Edited by ToxicFruit

Glad you enjoyed it, you ended up on the same route as i did my first time around, It actually got me out jogging again :)

I feel like the visual novel genre is really over looked in the gaming community, maybe because there is not much of a "game" in it or the sex scenes turn people off , but i feel like when it comes to story and character development no other genre does it better. I hope this makes you check out more VN's in the future !

There's also Hakuoki coming out on the PSP in the west next month. Not strictly a visual novel, but it contains a heavy romantic element from a female character's perspective.

I'd like to think (in my own little bias) that the reason there's no real conflict in Shizune's path is because of her character. I believe it was shown that Shizune is the type of person who when they identify a problem, immediately try to fix it themselves without any thought of getting outside help. So when she sees herself as being the problem, she chooses to keep to herself. There are several instances throughout her storyline where she's probably actually struggling internally, but there was little chance of her getting Hisao involved in the matter.

This can be supported by the fact that the only choice in the path has actually very little to do with interacting with Shizune. She simply uses Hisao's actions after your decision to come up with a solution as to how she should fix herself. Shizune is definitely an interesting character, but by her own words, she's kind of a terrible person.

Posted by TobbRobb

@MikkaQ: Fair enough, that logic I can get behind.

One of the main reasons I tried this in the first place is that I didn't have anything to read.

Also on account of dialogue only novels, I read the draft of the play "The Merchant of Venice" for a school assignment. That is something I will never, ever do again.

True, but on the other hand, at least Aksys is making the effort of releasing it here. It'll probably be only one of two games I'll buy for the handheld this year (assuming Final Fantasy: Type-0 is also released in North America before the end of the year).
