Jared is no friend to the fighting game community after exploiting a well known community site in order to get a job at Twitch.tv. He firmly believes in turning the FGC into Starcraft, and there is a ton of resentment towards him among the masses due to this. He hates the the FGC for who we are and wants to assimilate us to the eSports culture. Similar to how the mainstream chewed up and homogenized rap/hip-hop music into the pile of garbage it is now, the eSports reich plans to do the same to fighting games.

The bottom line is people don't understand the culture. Most people left the arcades when they stopped being casual, while people playing fighting games stayed in the trenches. It is very much so a hardened culture, one not easily tamed by the sudden comeuppance of the Street Fighter name in recent years. A majority of people like to forget the fact that fighting games were produced between Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV and most importantly that there were people actively playing the games between then. Do you really expect the community to be the same after it was abandoned 15 some-odd years ago?

The Truth is, Aris is what grew out of the arcade culture. He embodies the past people try to forget. He grew out of what everyone left behind, yet when Capcom finally sees a way to make a potential profit, they throw a leash on him and expect him to sit. It simply does not work that way. If Patrick had done the proper amount of sleuthing, he would have found the statement made by the other female contestant, Sherry "SherryJenix" Nhan regarding the situation.

I'm usually a huge fan of Patrick articles, but the whole "scoop" bit game-journos are salivating over is making this topic even more disturbing. And calling the fighting game community crass is not going to surprise anyone within, sorry.

This didn't seem to be a mutual thing. And yeah, I understand that some people enjoy being offensive. Too bad he couldn't keep it to himself in a public venue and came off looking like an asshole.

I've been following the Tekken scene for awhile, Aris is very controversial in his opinions he's just one of those guys who says bad things constantly.
That's just who he is, take it or leave it, i don't particularly like the things he says but he's one of the few keeping the scene alive, hosts alot of live streams and tournaments, makes informative videos and i can respect him for that.

There's a huge difference between saying "fuck you" or making fun of someone's play and following them around with a video camera and video taping their crotch, ass, and feet. One of them is something competitive people do. The other is something criminals do. What Aris did (and does) is not cool behavior among adults. This isn't about the fighting game community being rowdy or trash talking. It is about being sexually aggressive where it isn't wanted.

He reached out to both Super_Yan and Aris for comments on their side of the story. Neither responded. He didn't interview Jared either, instead posting a transcript of his conversation with Aris.

I don't oppose political correctness "philosophically". It has it's place. That place is not in cultures that exist majorly because of the members desire to have a PC free culture. Saying we should all be more polite in general is fine. Attempting to force it into a group of people who want nothing to do with it is not. As someone who knows nothing about the fighting game community, or the people in it. I must say, this article is rather silly. Anytime you have any sort of serious competitive atmosphere there is going to be trash talking, and nothing in this article is especially over the top as far as trash talking goes. Go play some COD on Xbox Live and tell me that anything in this is crossing the line, because the shit you hear on there is about 100 times worse than this.

Trash talking is part of competition, ask any kind of professional athlete, they all do it. If you can't take the heat, get out of the metaphorical kitchen.

Most of the time the fighting game community is very open to anyone playing, as long as you are good or trying! There is a small fighting game community where I live locally, and me and my fiancee are both members that show up regularly, and none of this stuff happens.

Also, just as a comparison, there was segregation between races in the US at one point. If he were alive at the time, he would be one of the people advocating segregation because "The United States is nothing if it doesn't have segregation." The idea that if it currently is being done, then it MUST be correct is one of the dumbest things I have read in a long time.

@Ares42: There's a very easy distinction to be made here. "Shit" and "Fuck" may offend you, but they won't insult you, because they're not insults. See, it's one thing for me to say "fuck this shit" in the forums and another for me to tell *you* to go fuck *yourself*.

In the first instance you can get offended, but that's your problem. It's you thinking some things aren't meant to be said. In the other example, be it a joke or not, you could feel insulted or harassed or attacked.

And that's where the line is.

The only people who can't see the line are the people who want to cross it and disingenuously pretend that anything is fair game as long as they are cool with it themselves. Don't think for a second that the irony of these threads getting so many responses saying "Giant Bomb (or Kotaku or whatever) shouldn't post about these things" while also claiming that this is somehow a "free speech" issue is lost here.

Hell their is a popular StarCraft video that is the very definition of this quote, it is not just the FGC. They was also an incident where DJwheat(a popular caster) intro'd his show saying "Welcome Bitches" which caused a bit of controversy. This spurred the Starcraft community about a months worth of discussion threads about appropriate language and the importance of context. I suspect the same will happen to the FGC if they really want to grow.

One thing I have certainly learned from these past few days is that every conversation I have with someone associated with the FGC should be preceded by the sentence: "Are you streaming this right now?".

edit: i was quoting the comments, these are things people who know nothing about the fgc have gathered from what patrick has written. and i find that offensive since everyone in the fgc who i hang out and play games with are great people and i do not want to see them spoken of in that way."

I'm not sure what depresses me more -- the incident described in the article, or some of the dumb shit I've read in this comment section.

I like this. Aris was harassing the men just as much as the women, often snickering that someone may be "gay" or something about their appearance.
