Double D Dodgeball

This either has something to do with Ed, Edd, n Eddy, or is the breast idea ever.

EDIT: So I google'd it. And it has nothing to do with either. Who the fuck wasted a perfectly good sports name on this shit?

Giant Bomb thanks you.

It is either really depressing or kinda awesome that I have played 41/50 of the top played games. On the flipside though I haven't played any of the least played games.

Ecco has fucking stupid achievements. No wonder nobody has many of them, a bunch of them are missable and you have to play through the game twice, I'd be surprised if most people even got to the second stage. That game requires a lot of patience and an insane amount of abusing the save-anywhere feature.

I've got em all.

Posted by Baillie

Of the 28,213 who played GTA4 only 41 (0.14%) won a match of each of the multiplayer game types.

Not true, me and a friend have won every multiplayer game type, but not received the achievement!

All that data, too little time, need sleep but sleep can wait. Kind of sad Xotic is so far down, its actually a pretty fun game.

@Marino: Very interesting thank you for posting this. Is it possible for you to do something like this for steam achievements?

Also do americans REALLY not know what snooker is?!

I actually do, but I doubt many would. I've never seen it on TV here, and I watch a lot of ESPN's half a dozen different channels.

wow i thought it was a big thing but now i think of it there is no one that isnt british in the world championships.

@Marino: what's with the significant drop in top 10 most played between 2010 and 2011? Otherwise this is very impressive.

Less people played games, I guess. Not sure what else it could be unless a ton of people un-synced their GamerTag from the site.

It's definitely doable. I would need to find a reliable list all games that have Steam achievements. I know there's a concept page for that, but I don't know how well it's kept up to date. Also, the site doesn't include completion percentage on Steam achievements for some reason. I guess it has something to do with them not having point values.

What I found most hilarious about the snooker games is that there's three guys on the cover...BUT THEY'RE THE SAME GUY!

Terrific work Marino! I love this in depth stat stuff.

Great lists, but i think you have to somehow account for users, pay or not, who do not synch their accounts. That's a lot of missing data.

Considering there's about 50,000 users who do have their accounts synced, I think that's more than good enough of a sample population. Also, whether a user is a subscriber or not has absolutely no bearing these statistics. It's not a factor.

Posted by LordAndrew

Unsyncing their accounts would cause Giant Bomb to discard ALL their achievement data, not just for newer games. People who did that aren't counted in these stats at all. But setting Xbox Live profile to private would cause Giant Bomb to miss achievements from newer games while retaining the old. That's a possibility.

@Marino: For a second there I thought you turned into with all this data. This stuff is crazy!

Most played game released between Christmas and New Year's. I have no idea when people played these games.

@Marino: You sir have done your homework and this data is amazing. Thank you.

Posted by WickedCobra03

I just read through the entire thing, and that was freaking awesome. Especially since it was broken down a lot by what the Giantbomb community plays since I would say our tastes are a little more niche than what I would say the general public is...

The most impressive piece of info to me is that Halo: Reach FAR outplayed CoD: Black Ops on 360 (By 8,000 users!). And here I was thinking that MS may have sent Halo 4 to die against CoD BO2. Maybe it's the other way around?

Anyway, awesome that you did this.

Posted by PatchMaster

Interesting stuff. Nice work.

Posted by StarvingGamer

How weird. I'm so far removed from the Xbox and achievements that it's like peering into a bizarre alternate reality of gaming.

you are the man !

awesome awesome post!

makes sense to me these stats would be front loaded like that, there are a lot of people who don't play games when they are brand new.

Either GB has been losing active years each year, or the more likely scenario, users are playing less "AAA" games. Why this is the case isn't exactly clear, as the quality of games hasn't gone down.

I think people are just playing them on systems other than the 360. The PS3 versions of these games aren't as broken as they once were and more and more people are turning to the PC as this generations console hardware is getting older.

It makes me really happy to see Bioshock and Assassin's Creed (the first one!) so high on the top 50. And Bioshock's rankings overall are damned impressive considering all of the Halo and Gears games it has to contend with.

Really good stuff.

You could add one for top 50 rarest S ranked games (games that have at least one person that has S ranked them) and another for the rarest achievements from within that list.

And maybe a weighted "most completed" list so you don't get so many easy achievement games (maybe just most completed from the top 50 played?).

I feel like I learned something.

You sir, are a madman.

What a writeup! A lot of interesting stuff in there. And btw, I was one of those who beat Mass Effect 3 without Javik. It was my roommate's game and I played it first so I didn't want to take the download from him, or the online pass.

For future reference, you actually still can do that stuff, just have his account logged in as player 2. If you share an xbox it's even easier because it should just work. (DLC is licensed by console and gamertag ID, as long as one of them can be verified the DLC should work.)

That said, insane list. Well done, sir.

Your understanding of this achievement is incorrect. It says all variations of multiplayer which means all variants of all game types. So to earn it you need to win on every race course (including the helicopter and boat variants) in both regular Race mode and GTA Race mode. So there are 120 different matches that you need to win.

Now this means one of two things. Either GB has been losing active years each year, or the more likely scenario, users are playing less "AAA" games.

Option three: GB users are disproportionately more hardcore to migrate to Steam, dropping off Xbox achievement lists.

Option four: GB users are disproportionately more likely to purchase and then split time between Xbox and PS3, 'losing' achievements to trophies.

Option five: Sequel fatigue. Are you really missing much if you skip Halo Anniversary or Assassin's Creed 2-3?

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of it is fact Option 1 flavored with Option 5 (while I have more disposable income than ever, I have less time and interest in yet another same engine sequel waiting for the next console cycle), mixed with some Option 3 (After a decade without, I put together a gaming PC for my brother last week, and that night he was hitting Steam for heavily discounted 2011 releases).

You forgot option 6: Lower-priced consoles means more extremely price-sensitive consumers that go back and comb the shelves at Gamestop for sub-$10 games, giving a bigger bump to older games due to not having an interest in spending 6x the price for games with more or less the same amount of gameplay.

Even if they aren't that price-conscious, people are starting to realize that there isn't much of a difference between yesterday's blockbusters and the new hotness. I personally have spent the majority of this year playing titles I never got around to instead of dropping $60 on something that'll also be put on the pile of shame for years and years. I've literally only played 2 games released in 2012, according to my achievements, out of 195 played games: ME3 and Fez. Everything else I've been playing has been old.

Well, that makes a bit more sense as to why it's so rare then.

I'm sure it's not the only factor by any means, but a way you could tell perhaps is if you do this again say in a couple years and look to see if some of the games are that are relatively new now have significantly bigger numbers than they do now.

If they do then you can probably reasonably infer that achievement seekers (on giant bomb anyway) don't buy a lot of new games (Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War 3 would be good ones to compare as both will likely get Greatest Hits versions and such).

If they don't well then perhaps one of the other suggested causes (PS3, indie interest etc) might be more meaningful.

cool data man, thanks for sharing!

Posted by rockyhorrorgerri

Those random facts blew my mind haha.

Posted by Marino

@Slag: Like you mentioned, it'll be cool to maybe do this again down the road and compare. My next project will be centered around reviews on the site. And I'll probably do a smaller scale achievement thing at the end of 2012 like I did at the end of 2011.

This is really interesting to read. Just wondering why Japanese 360 games were largely omitted? I'm sure a bunch of them would be on the least played list.

Oh and I think the reason Asteroids Deluxe has done so poorly compared to Asteroids is because the achievements are from the Windows Phone version.

I used this list, which is separate from the Japanese games. I assumed the Japanese games would dominate the least played games, and decided to omit them, as those games don't really seem important to this audience anyway.

I am similarly glad Mass Effect 2 achievementers are dedicated.

I think I'm obligated to state this due to some of the content in your comprehensive list:

"One Hundred and Eighty!"

Sorry,anyways,awesome work.Sure it was a hell of a lot of effort.And text.

Posted by EquitasInvictus

This is awesome! Looking back at it, I was really into the earlier 2006-2008 titles that made it into the top 20. I think I played 80% of the top 15! All were worth it, so I guess I got my money's worth out of buying a 360 out of the gate. Now I don't feel as bad about recently getting a PS3 to tie the loose ends for my gaming this generation. Dunno how or if I'll keep up with next generation once I have to fully integrate into society as a working class adult, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there.
