"Who's that dog"? Is he a character?" - Patrick Klepek

Juice that dog!

Coming to this after the Spelunkin' With Scoops feature makes watching this infuriating.

Brad blaming the game for getting killed by the bat... just lol.

But seriously, 2012. A different time.

I'm really looking forward to the Vita release today. Never got around to playing on 360.

It's supposedly really good and it's cross buy. I'm getting it there.

@the_bad_doctor: Giantbomb.com, where we bitch and moan about the most absurdly stupid and pointless stuff, and then continue to watch hours of videos to bitch about.

Posted by peritus

The new video got me playing this game again, and im stressed out now! But i love this game! ( I have to get me some premium again to see the breaking brad of this )

Posted by dillonj9889

@Korosuzo: I wish for that every single day that we have existed in a post-spelunky world.

Posted by Korosuzo

Still wish they would do a Breaking Bad with Spelunky but at this point we might be too far out. Oh well I can always hope.

Posted by wariomona

lol at watching this video after putting some time into this game.

So much bad info and decisions being made

Posted by The_Bad_Doctor

So this is basically Demons/Dark souls philosophy in 2D form.

Posted by ch3burashka

Brad's exasperated screams are probably the worst fucking thing ever.

Posted by TwoLines

@McGhee: 4 mine levels, 4 jungle levels, 4 ice cave levels, 4 temple levels and a boss. And that's it.

Posted by McGhee

Can this game actually be beaten or does it go on forever?

Brad needs to stop taking the QL's so seriously and have more fun with it. Why not bomb the shop keeper the first time?

That's exactly what I think when I watch him play. He's really too worried about looking bad or playing bad. It's just a game!

With THIS community, THAT'S the argument you're going with?? Go check out the comments on ANY Endurance Run if you want some "Whoa! Chill, it's JUST a game"-worthy comments.

Posted by Y2Ken

Okay I need to play this game. Not quite as good value as Binding of Isaac but I'm still in.

Posted by melodiousj

Another protip, courtesy of Scott Sharkey. You can attach a sticky bomb to a damsel and then let her run further down the level and act as a suicide bomber for you.

Posted by TournamentOfHate

@liako21: Pretty much right away there was a bunch of stuff that reminded me of the Souls games.

I love Jeff constantly goating Brad into screwing himself over, while Patrick waits for Brad to screw himself over, then rubs it in his face.

Posted by fox01313

Good QL guys, though after playing a few hours of the PC version I'm glad that I played that before buying the 360 game as it is that fine mix of love/hate. I like the improvements they did for the 360 version though it's so easy to die in so many ways. Funniest moment in the PC game I had was finding a shop that was selling a shotgun & just picking it up to see it, shooting the shopkeep then getting everything else in the store. Also Brad really should have put a bomb on the altar, funny stuff.

Miner Threat, huh :]

Posted by lib3rtine

Looks great. Can't wait for an HD-ified PC version.

Posted by kwikshot

It looks nice but if I'm honest the PC version has a nicer graphical style

You don't "retrieve an object and go back again" in Spelunky.

A little experimentation will solve that arrow problem...

Posted by MrBlueJackle

Instead of getting into the nerdiest of nerd arguments that was ever nerded, I'm watching this Quick Look again.

Posted by darkest4

3 man quicklooks are good fun. Looks like the type of game I'd like to watch people play but would probably be not so amusing to me playing solo. Woulda liked to have seen them do a deatmatch without a billion bombs, looked like it coulda been pretty strategic and fun.

Posted by melodiousj

Protip: Throw rocks, skulls or any other debris you can find into the path of the arrow traps to set them off without getting hurt. Then go pick up the arrow and throw it at enemies.

Glad the XBLA game turned out good. I loooove the PC game.

Gameplay? Spelunky is inspired by the gameplay of the original Rogue? So it's a menu-based RPG? What are you people blathering about? Not only has everyone forgotten what "Roguelike" means, now they're forgetting basic terms.

Spelunky is my favorite bullet hell because the music looks good.

I did describe the parts of the gameplay that Spelunky was inspired by. And Rogue wasn't menu based.

Sure it's not an top down, tile-based and turn-based RPG (it's not the first Roguelike to change the persective, drop the leveling up-part, nor the first to be in real-time), but are those really the defining aspects of an Roguelike? Not the "you have to get to the bottom floor in a (10 levels deep) randomly generated dungeon, retrieve an object and get back again, and if you die along the way, you have to start all over again"?

You don't "retrieve an object and go back again" in Spelunky. Also, the games play entirely differently. Elements of Spelunky are inspried by Rogue. Like the modular levels, the level "feelings" and the perma-death. But it does not play like a Roguelike and therefore is not a Roguelike. You know what game it's more like? Spelunker. A platformer.

Yes, co-op adventure with Jeff, Ryan, and Patrick. :)

Posted by mcbrid55

You can actually turn off the tambourine and bell sounds if you want in the settings. Sometime that noise does get in the way of amazing FF music.

Posted by Romination

...I think this game looks FUN... but I think the whole "limiting your time in a level by spawning in a ghost" aspect is a pretty big turn off for me.

So its a platformer. And when you die you start over. And they are deconstructing it like its something amazing thats never been done before. Outside of every NES platformer ever.

Haha. Patrick, showing his gaming knowledge right off the bat - "So it is a Roguelike, through and through." Yea Patrick, it is a Roguelike.....I guess Super Mario Brothers was a Roguelike. What did you hear the word Roguelike when Dave was playing Dwarf Fortress and just had to use it in a sentence?

Seriously, what is with the dissecting of this game. It almost sounded like a farce....like if I spent an hour dissecting and exaggerating the complexities of Rayman....

You're both quite wrong, actually. The platforming aspect has nothing to do with it being considered a roguelike.

Do a little research. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelunky#Influences

Dumbasses getting SERVED.

DId I say it didnt have some of those elements in there? Dont think so. Just saying that this isnt super original and the 2 of them were wetting themselves trying to one up each other on different colorful adjectives that they think describes the game. Then you resort to namecalling? Thats awesome man. Really and truly is. Well done.

I think Roguelike is a proper descriptor for this game, it is a side scrolling roguelike - the randomly generated dungeons, loot and enemies, and that you're constantly going deeper (seems like there are actually 10 levels, like in strict roguelikes as well - 3 for each setting + 1 "special"/hell?) are all aspects of Roguelikes. Unless you're super strict and it necessarily has to be top down, using ANSI art and navigated with keyboard, in which case pretty much only Rogue and clones, rather than games that are inspired by the gameplay would count.

Wouldn't you say games like Bioshock and Deus Ex are inspired by the style started by System Shock - System Shock-likes if you will, despite the fact that they don't use sprite based enemies or that the crosshair is centered on the screen rather than something you can move around without affecting the camera? Does these differences make them entirely different games despite the core concepts being the same? I see pretty much the same relationship and differences between Spelunky and Rogue.

Yeah, there's been a surge of great quicklooks recently, though I think the total chaos and randomness (fitting for an Roguelike) makes this one of my favorites.

It's too bad they ditched the pixel art style from the PC version. I feel like that had so much more character and charm. Still, it's been a while since Binding of Isaac, I might be up for another rougelike.
