wow, this trailer is terrible. I might still buy the game anyway, though.

Was I the only one who thought the music was ALL wrong, because I can hear the correct music for every scene shown?

Funny how the original PC version was ported by Eidos and now SE owns them. I wonder if they'll handle this re-release too.

I often feel like Final Fantasy VII the game gets confused with Final Fantasy VII the important landmark for video games. When people argue about it being one of the greatest games or whatever, and then people actually play it and realise that whoa, this 15 year old game holds up quite poorly in terms of graphics, translation, the music is all midi, the story is grandiose and over-the-top... it's very easy to forget what it meant for video games.

It brought in a new era of cinematic, interactive storytelling which, for better and for worse has shaped the direction the industry has channelled it's resources for the last 15 years. Not single-handedly, but critically.

You're one of those people who thinks that The Onion articles are real, aren't you?

No, I'm not. The onion is clever though. If that was an attempt at being satirical, then it was a failure. There is a very short line from being funny and just being stupid.

Aside from cloud saves, achievements, and HD support, I'm not honestly sure what they're really doing with this. It's FFVII, and people have been waiting a long time. It would be nice if they would go all out with it.

Don't you mean Cloud saves?

Yeah... this is the only game that can have true Cloud saves.

It's odd to wonder how Final Fantasy VII became so popular. Reading these and more comments from the internet, you'd think it was the worst game ever.

WILL THIS GAME HAVE SUPPORT FOR CLOUD GAME SAVES??? Has someone made that joke already? Almost certainly? Okay, good day.

uh, ok. So I'll just play the CD-ROMs I still have from the original. Not sure how this is different.

I love that this ad looks and sounds like it's from 1997 too.

I'll pay for this and play it again. The games of old are better than 90% of the crap released in the past 10 years.

Haters gonna hate on FF, FF7 and Square Enix.

EDIT: I should add that even the SE games in the last 10 years have been mostly crap. That's why I'd prefer remakes/rereleases.

I like how the guy straight up says play it like never before. Except Final Fantasy was totally released on PC when it came out. I own a copy.

@Mezmero: I plugged in my 360 controller, and even with the old software, I was able to play with it with zero configuration.

Edited by MattyFTM

Assuming it's a reasonable price, I'd be happy to get Final Fantasy VII and play through it again. It's years since I've played it. I don't see why it's weird to be re-releasing old PC games. I mean, GoG have been doing it for years and no one complained then. It is a bit weird that it's exclusive to the Squeenix store, but they obviously think that the FF VII name has enough might behind it to sell even if it's not on an established digital distributor like Steam or GoG, and they want to keep 100% of the money rather than having to give Valve or CD Projekt a cut.

@Gordo789: There is something unique about the Amano style. There could be a way to put that style in a game and it would look absolutely amazing. However i think about this:

And I just don't think it looks all that great. Everyone looks like they are made of fine china. VI is my favorite from the series as well and when you look at Amanos art and then the in game models some things are way off. I can't think of Terra with blonde hair or Celes cosplaying as Dagger.

If they don't make a game that looks like a drawling/paintings than that is where I object because the 2 complaints i hear most are that Nomura makes girly looking boys and he over accessorizes the characters, but I feel like Amano is guilty of it too he just does it with style.

@believer258: Its all good. I really don't care if you make fun of these things because it is true. But with Lightning they clearly thought "we want to make a female cloud." With Setzer and Farris, that just how Amano draws pretty people.

Posted by CatAlex

Um, I played this on PC in 1998 already. I still have the discs somewhere, too, but I don't think they work anymore...

Posted by Relshak

I'm happy enough that it's HD, but if you're going to bring FFVII back, just put in the work and update the graphics, already. You know that's what the fans want. Just do it. Stop messing around.

Maybe if they did something like Okami or El Shaddai that would be cool. But even then I think I'd get tired of so much whimsy and feminine looking dudes wearing tiaras and rat tails reclining back midair in a middle eastern gothic city. But if there is no stylization too it, Nomura can put as many belts on someone as he wants and add another antler to Seymour's hair. I rather take that than every character having that skin tight armor Amano does.

Yeah, cause it's not like there are any feminine looking dudes in Final Fantasy since Amano stopped doing the character designs...

Vaan is the very image of manliness.

Um... You know the page you linked to has this on it right?

:P

"Users on TV Tropes tend to mark sarcasm in what they write by making the sentence in question and potholing it to this page. Do NOT do this. It's a much better idea to just write in a way that makes the sarcasm clear. Limit the potholes to when it's actually necessary, like for showing the sarcasm in a quote whose sarcasm isn't apparent without the pothole."

Yep, and that's just advice that some bloke edited into the Wiki at some point. I, however, do think that linking the sarcasm page is a much better way of making my sarcastic intent clear. It doesn't get in the way of the words and people almost always read the words I have written before clicking the link. This way, the people who will catch the sarcasm anyway won't be bothered by the stupid fucking faux-html tags that are detailed on that page, and the people who won't catch it will soon find out that it was, indeed, sarcasm and they do not need to quote me to tell me otherwise. I guess I could link the Wikipedia page for sarcasm but that's no fun at all.

And, besides, that warning is generally intended for TVTropes users.

But why would you link to a TV Tropes page outside of TV Tropes to explain something that isn't inherent to TV Tropes? Why not link to a dictionary entry for sarcasm...? Or, you know, use any of the tricks explained on the trope page, like using faux-html tags or exaggerated writing to convey the point...

I explained why I didn't want to use faux HTML tags in my post (it kind of ruins the sarcasm) and despite using clearly exaggerated writing a lot of people still won't get that it's sarcasm. So the best route for me is to link a page that defines sarcasm in some manner. I like TVTropes a lot, so I use TVTropes.

And, like I said before, that warning is for TVTropes users in the TVTropes Wiki. See, look here:

"Users on TV Tropes tend to mark sarcasm...

I feel like if you discount just one of the characters from each game than you'll have a cast of males that look somewhat masculine. Cloud, Hope, Zidane, Tidus, and Vann, take them out and your left with a bunch of much older dudes. Everyone knows Vann wasn't even supposed to be there, its all just marketing. Looking at the Amano artwork, that is a little harder to do.

Really though feminine characters don't bother me that much. Look at an Amano picture of Setzer in google, then one of Farris, It's the same character. His art just looks the same because everything is so white. You know lightning and Cloud look a lot alike, but I don't think I'd ever confuse the two. Also his art is just dull at times, people complain about the brownness of games, his art has a lot of whites, browns blacks, and grays, then everything else looks washed out.

One has boobs.

...

...

I'm kidding, I'm just poking fun at the series. It's a really easy series to poke fun at. As for the differences between Nomura and Amano's art, I don't really have a preference.

The beginning of the end of Final Fantasy as a relevant franchise. Who cares.

Posted by Gordo789

@Nottle: You're right, that's a good point about there being just one super feminine dude in each of the later Final Fantasies.

I think preference for one designer or the other is just a question of taste. I prefer Amano's designs because they don't look like typical japanese anime bullshit. Later Final Fantasy characters look like they'd not at all be out of place if suddenly they appeared on an episode of Naruto. Admittedly, I'm a huge fan of Final Fantasy VI, and the characters in that game are the most memorable in the series to me. There are a lot of characters I like from later Final Fantasies, though. hell, I'm playing XIII right now and most of the cast aside from Hope and Snow are pretty alright.
