Those are marvelous news. Too bad it's been a lot since the game was announced, I find myself bored of waiting for it.

Kotaku blatantly fabricating "facts?" SHOCKING. Next you're going to tell me they consider themselves a legitimate gaming news site and that their commenters are second only to GameFAQs posters as the dumbest bricks on the internet.

It did seem that an awful lot of work to be put into a game just to be cancelled. Like I know they've mostly only released cut-scenes, but there was that trailer last year or whenever it was that had a lot of extremely quick gameplay footage and it seemed varied. I hope they chance the name because it's awful. The only tie to FF13 is they're using the same kind of creation story/goddess plot line (which btw, if they'd made more prominent in the first place, might have been cool, rather than burying it in hard-to-get lore and primers)

As if anyone cares about FF by now.

Just glad they are still working on it.

For fucks sake, just put a bullet in it's skull and get the team on KH3.

I really feel sorry for the die-hard fans, who have to see this series flogged out like a dead horse over and over again by a once-great developer that is bound to make every game worse than the last. Square once made things like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV, heck even Final Fantasy 7 was a lot better than what they've put out since. The only good thing they've been attached of late was Deus Ex: Human Revolution and (I think?) RUSE, and I doubt they were very involved in the development processes of either.

Why do people keep saying things like this and insisting that it is some well known fact just because they may have not liked the most recent entry in the franchise? The games in the franchise are so wildly different, that nobody can agree on what the best/worst Final Fantasies are, cause they appeal in different ways to different people. Yet somehow, whenever a game comes out that isn't "My favourite FF-2" they panic and herald the end of the company. Unless you really think that FFIV was the last good FF, in which case I'm pretty sure you just don't actually like the genre.

There's a lot of people that actually LIKE their recent games. I don't like WRPGs, but I don't herald the end of Bethesda after Skyrim came out, just because I didn't like it. That'd be quite silly, yes?

Agreed. I've never played a FF game and am currently playing my first JRPG (Xenoblade) since Golden Sun on the GBA (unless the Paper Mario-style games count), but I'm sick of people acting as if Square have totally shit the bed. XIII was surely a disappointment to many, but it wasn't received that badly. There's a lot of games with the words "Final Fantasy" in the title, but the only mainline games made in the last 12 years have been X, XII, XIII, and XIII-2. Nintendo has almost released the same number of console Zelda games in the same time period. Square aren't perfect, but this industry has a lot of lazy lack of creativity to go around (Western developers being some of the worst offenders).

I blame the Giant Bomb guys a bit for this -- whenever FF comes up on the podcast, they stoke the fire and lend legitimacy to the FF hate. I'm not usually one to complain about the Bombcast, but I can't stand people making pointed criticisms about things they don't understand. The GB guys complaining about FF is the equivalent of a bunch of hardcore Mac users who haven't used Windows since XP making fun of BSODs and the Office paperclip.

@mutha3: I think it's more of a 'Dream Team' of people being given unlimited money and time. Anytime I have heard a game dev on the bombcast they always say if they had more money and time. On the flipside if you take too long people lose interest and the game end's up being bad, case in point GT5

How was GT5 bad? I enjoyed it. I'd say that it was the first Gran Turismo that I could enjoy in any capacity.

I'm not sure I even want this game anymore. It always shocks me how incompetent a company of the caliber of Squeenix can be. Surely, this game isn't going to end up being more difficult to make, then, I dunno Assassin's Creed Brotherhood? Because they're a similarly huge company.

Different games of different sizes and scopes aren't necessarily equal in terms of difficulty in how they're made. You can't compare Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood to Final Fantasy Versus XIII in that way because, in all likelihood, Versus XIII is a much longer game, and all of its assets are brand new, whereas Brotherhood had the benefit of being able to recycle assets from Assassin's Creed II.

Basically, you're suggesting that that the development costs and effort between, say, Xenoblade Chronicles and Modern Warfare 3 should be the same because Nintendo and Activision are both enormous.

I can see this getting a name change but I don't think it will be Final Fantasy XV, they are not going to make an Action RPG the next main FF. However similar to Final Fantasy Agito XIII becoming Final Fantasy Type-0 I think Versus will get something similar. I'm hoping that Agni's Philosophy Tech Demo is FF XV because I think gritty coke bottle magic is exactly what the series needs.

Wasn't it announced or "leaked" sometime around E3 that FFXIII Versus was actually FFXV now? Or were people speculating that too.

There was a video of an audience watching a faked FFXV trailer that was nothing more than a preexisting Versus XIII trailer with an FFXV logo appended at the end. It was completely faked.

Watch it actually happen.

They are going to flash "FFXIII Versus" on a big screen and then the "III" fades and "Versus" slides into where "III" used to be Finally the "ersus" from "Versus" disappears revealing "FFXIII Versus" to be "FFXV."

Then, We all find out that FFXV is actually FFVII-2 because as one of my earlier posts said FFVII-2 is like FFVII and a half and you times that by 2 and you get FFXV.

This totally makes sense in the world of Final Fantasy and would be the most contrived and "awesome" thing ever (in terms of video game announcements).

I hope someone from Square is reading this.

Actually, a 10 hour action/hack-slash game that is in any Final Fantasy setting could probably be a lot of fun.

Posted by Oherro

As huge as Final Fantasy is and how big I fan I was of Squaresoft / Square Enix, I really think its time for the franchise to take a long time out. Feels like Call of Duty 13.

Kingdom Hearts but with a Final Fantasy skin. I just can't wait and am absolutely delighted it's not cancelled. Wow my post is way too proper and polite.... SHIT FUCK FUCK SHIT. better

FFXV is actually FFVII-2 in disguise, because FF 7 and a 1/2 times 2 equals FF15....

"We at Square-Enix hope that our continual dumping of good money and talent after bad into FFXIV proves our commitment to you, the Final Fantasy fan, that Versus still lives."

Edited by PenguinDust

When was this game first announced? Games like this and The Last Guardian get these potentially false cancellations because they're announced way too early and then they go dark for years and years. If they turn up, and I still have my suspicions, it's likely to be largely different from what was described during those first reveals. That's not a bad thing, but it underscores how rumors can circulate in the absence of information.

I wonder when SE will stop numbering their FF games. It just seems silly when you name your game Final Fantasy XIII-2 etc. Maybe when they hit XX?

I wanna see that Final Fantasy XXX, bro!

I've seen that on the internet already. It was sticky.

We should know by now not to trust Kotaku. But I actually thought that cancelling it would have been the right move.

Regular Versus Meetings? Feh. 6 hours of strippers and cocaine, plus 5 minutes of working on the game, does not mean this game is still alive Yoichi Wada ;)

If they want us to believe it still exists then show us the game.

Just make the game so he can move on to KH3 so I can stop caring about the KH series.

@Brodehouse

What a thoroughly ridiculous project.

Six years. Six years is longer than most generations last. This would be like showing the trailer the week the Playstation 1 is released and then dispelling rumors that it's been cancelled the week the Playstation 2 was released.

From what I understand, the game hasn't actually been in heavy development for all six years.
Posted by doe3879

oh right, this game still exist/being made

Posted by Orange_Pork

I still don't think this is ever going to see the light of day. Maybe Gearbox will put it out in 2020.

Posted by crithon

I bet the term is "shifted development to another division." Japanese developers team spends way too much time on 3DS and PSP that they come off like cave men banging away at rocks when it comes to 360, PS3 and PC.

My thoughts exactly. There are other great games that make the waiting easier, but I'm slowly running out of patience...

So... is this going to be on the next gen of consoles, or this gen?

I have to imagine with Sony (wisely) not continuing the cell processor next gen, that if this game were to be on the next consoles, that would require a lot of rewriting of the code. If they made that decision, I hope they made it a long time ago.
