Pretty interesting to see how Brad and Jeff view 1.6, especially from my point of view joining in 1.5 and playing for like 5 years. Good to see Drew so enthused about this.

this was the pinnacle for counter-strike videos in the german CS community. man, at the time, this seemed like a freaking hollywood production.

this is from 2004.

Are there any modern shooters that don't track you constantly? Like with zero persistence? You leave the game and everything is wiped until you play again? I feel like the only person that hates having all of these dumb stats following them around.

I kinda agree, an entire way of playing FPSes, which I really used to enjoy seems to have been lost these days. There were lots and lots of Quake servers which were not about topping the leaderboards or winning - they had infinite or extremely high match times and killcounts, and people jumped in, played for an hour or two and left, with no care for KDR or that stuff. Switching maps was done by calling a vote or talking to the server admin. Having the option to set an infinite lenght match which people can join and leave freely doesn't even seem to exist in modern FPSes. Many don't even let you join in the middle of the match, and instead force all players to wait a minute or two between matches for people to join.

I ain't no CS player but Gun Game is always dope.

the barrier to entry in this game is like running into a fucking brick wall. tf2 is call of duty-esque by comparison.

No kidding. Not only have most of CS:GO players been playing old CS since time immemorial but most have been in on the beta for the past few months.

Holy Shit, that Status: Owned video made my entire goddamn week.

I want someone else on this site reading these comments to acknowledge that they know what "sinking the ship" means. And no, that's not a dirty euphemism... (this time)

Is it like Slappin' the Grimlock?

I'm going to say... no.

Then, I have no idea what that means. But it sounds almost as dirty.

By the way, does anybody remember the CS beta 5 or 6 map with two driveable jeeps with mounted machineguns on opposite sides of an donut shaped outer area, with an central indoor area where the terrorists had to plant a bomb in a toilet?

I think the name was de_jeep or something like that.

Also remember a map that seemed pretty cool also during the late beta era in 1999-2000 that I think was named cs_siege. And if I remember correctly, the author had made a few other decent maps, but commited suicide before CS got it's retail release.

yep! de_jeep! i also remember cs_siege pretty vividly. you had to go over that huge bridge in this garage where the Ts would be. it was kinda cool, but the Ts had a major advantage.

also: COUNTER-STRIKE 1.6 TNT. LETS DO IT!

I've been playing alot of the ps3 version and enjoying my time, i would have liked to have more players but the game is still fun. At least im living longer than in Counter Strike Source

All it took was one round in the beta version to know that Counter-Strike is still not for me.

May buy this when it's 5 bucks on Steam in 6 months. Played the XBox version and it was awful. Just doesn't translate well to console.

Yeah, no reason to buy a Valve game for more, unless you're super psyched.

If you're gonna wait for the price drop... why not just play old CS?

Because I don't actually want to play Counter-Strike that much... my interest is pure novelty.

Posted by camp7203

Downloaded it on ps3 and really enjoying it so far. Jumping into a game is effortless and everything feels almost right. Although, I fear lack of clan support, shitty worthless shotguns, and the dreaded DLC maps might be this games undoing. We'll see.

The guns were changing. Brad, hilariously clueless as always. Also Dust 2 is far more popular.

Posted by MeAuntieNora

Brad was pretty good IMO.

Posted by NickL

I remember a star wars map where you were on the deathstar and there were tie fighters that you could actually fly in.

Posted by cooljammer00

Hesh wants deaths!

Posted by Draxyle

I completely missed the initial Counter-Strike train back in the day, but I never got into the whole FPS thing in the first place either. My first online multiplayer shooter was some free Wolfenstein download thing that was only multiplayer. Still don't remember exactly what it was.

The synchronized "Whaaaaat?" was pretty fantastic.

Drew talking about that ice map I remember tat. I played a lot of scoutknifez which as it sounds was a map with only the scout sniper and a knife. Also I played ak-colt which was the AK47 vs the M4 and then AWP map which was all about the AWP sniper on an open field with some brick walls.

I forgot about that devil of an ice map. I'm glad Drew was there because now I'm remembering all the fun times I had with Source. Playing on orange maps, playing dm gungame on Lego maps and of course scoutknifez. A lot of that extended to Day of Defeat: Source but yeah lot of fun times on CS: Source. The only thing I couldn't get into was surf maps, although I gave it a good try once.

Yeah for me I can go for a round of de_italy or de_office right now. Damn fine game, just not much you can say about it other than "yo its Counter-Strike".

Posted by Zommunism

Listening to Drew talk, I think we may have played on the same server. His CS experience is almost exactly the same as mine.

Posted by Example1013

PC shooters are stupid

Posted by Tesla

Oh shit I forgot about the mouse wheel firing dualie trick! And the ice and star wars custom maps. Drew is bringing back memories.

Urge to pick this up...rising.

Posted by Askherserenity

Damn, nicce job Brad.

Posted by Beaudacious

That bodacious was a fake.

Posted by TehJedicake

Guys. It's Counter-Strike.

Posted by scottygrayskull

I hear on 360 you can't do party chat when you're playing online.

I mean, sure, I guess that makes sense given how CS works. But... fuck, come on now.

Posted by DaBuddaDa

I was a massive CS fan back during 1.6 and earlier. I'll give this a shot, why not.

Posted by Encephalon

Shoot butts?

I'm in.

Edited by Tarsier

this game is surprisingly awesome on xbox 360.

the controls on the xbox are great and allow for nearly as much precision and skill as the PC version. the difference is that its a completely level playing field and someone wont beat you because they have a really good setup and tweaked a bunch of crap with their game and mouse setup.

We need more Drew in QL's. Really like him.

Posted by Chtasm

Ballins Assault 24/7, represent! A server which pretty much defined my entire Counter-Strike experience. This QL has made me a bit nostalgic. :')

Posted by AjayRaz

hell yes Drew. rtd was the best. it was awesome when it turned you into the chicken and you wandered around the map defenseless

also, the 360 version of this is surprisingly great. matchmaking with a party is broken but it's a ton of fun with friends.

I keep wondering why people would switch over from CS Source or 1.6. What's the incentive for veterans? It has new graphics, new achievements and a bit of COD, but that seems to be it. Is that gonna be enough for oldschool CS players?

Posted by mbdoeden

Man, all of these counter strike videos make me feel like I'm back in high school. F10 for cheatzzzz.

Edited by GenocidalKitten

Brad: "Dust is here."

So, what you're saying is that CounterStrike is a game for furies? And his favorite map is dust that furry bastard/joke

Posted by Goblin

This made me realize how much CS I really played back in the 1.3 - 1.5 days, before I discovered better mods like Day of Defeat, Natural Selection and The Specialists.

I recognize - and agree with - everything Drew was saying... that Alien pulse rifle was my AK47 for a looong time:P

Arms Race?? Isn't this just Gun Master taken from Battlefield 3?? Why not jusy play Battlefield 3??

It was played in CS before CS:GO and other games that predate BF3 so..

Posted by Fonzinator

@BearSpark: You know, that mode of play has existed long before BF3. And I assume you are just "going for lulz" with your comment because of all of the "????????".

Regardless, CS plays way different than a BF game. There is no, "why not just play game x?" when it comes to CS.

CSS/GO does not have even a byte of fucking Call of Duty you dope.
Posted by SupernormalStep

CS: GO on the PS3 can use Keyboard and mouse, it's pretty neat! If you're a beginner like me, want to play Counter Strike, and don't want to be bogged down by expert players , it might be a good alternative.

Posted by AxleBro

do they address if its more or less counterstrike than source, because it better fucking be more.

Posted by Midjet

There are sprays in the game brad, you just need to enable them.
Drew, the map you're thinking of is Iceworld.

Posted by Dethfish

fy_iceworld_arena is probably the map drew was talking about. That's one of my favorites.

As I understood it the "arms race" mode is bascially ripped straight out of the MW series, so there -- http://callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Gun_Game
