Of course you need a horizontal stand! How else will you know if you are truly setting your console horizontally? The stand lets you know.

If I remember correctly the official Sony horizontal stand for PS2 wasn't sold outside of Japan, but they did give them out during launch parties in the rest of the world.

Stands are boss. I bought a slim PS2 in '09 and had to import a stand to make it go because those jerks at Sony USA didn't want to release one here. Jerks.
