Game looks great & fun seeing it in action. Hopefully you can create some kind of template so if you want your squads to have the same names in each playthrough (like here with the GB crew) then you can speed up the creation process of renaming people.

Okay, this is not my type of genre, but I have to admit, this is kind of cool-looking.

I....it's....yeah, it's ripping off the old XCOM with no shame or intention of hiding it. Good eye.

OH FUCK! I never realised this. EVEN THE NAMES ARE THE SAME!

Yeah, that's Francios Chau. I recognized it, too :D Say hi to your mother for me.

Man, I can't wait to get my hands on this, as well as Dishonoured on the same day! Crazy.

Dumbed down mechanics, dated visuals, one of the worst PC UIs seen in a game since Skyrim... good going, Firaxis.

Big Jeffrey for Jeff is completely right, I don't know what Ryan's talking about. :)

Very Deus Ex-esque music.

This guy sounds like Dave and kinda talks like him too!! "top men", he used that term!!!

LOL That is an awesome troll attempt! Good on ya! I could not stop laughing!

Those Firaxis dudes seem pretty rad. So does this game, I'm totally on board.

"Both, control-wise, are very elegant and intuitive to use..." "It was fairly straight-forward to map onto the controller..." "I'm a mouse-and-keyboard guy..."

I really don't know how they can peddle this horseshit. It's a console game badly ported to PCs.

I never played original X-Com but this game looks amazing. Looks like a super bad ass version of Valkyria Chronicles. I might buy it just from what I've seen in this video.

Hate EX's

As a person who is usually very intimidated by the strategy genre, i am genuinely excited to play this. It looks so well done and deep with mechanics that I very well would enjoy. Trying to keep a squad together looks genuinely challenging, overall the game seems fun.

Shout outs to Lt. Big Jefferey!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Big Jeffrey is gonna be the heavy of my squad for sure.

this update is certainly intriguing, and the graphics and designs of Xeno are appealing. I still don't understand the controls, and how they made it compatible with a controller; I honestly don't think they did enough to fully exploit pc controls. six member team on a smaller scale map is disappointing, as is the curious absence of anything resembling traditional action points. In the end, it would all come down to the AI and how solid the simplified tactical combat can underpin content and mod possibilities. Or there is always Xenonauts to look forward to.

I need this game!

I have an irrational fear of aliens that sometimes puts me (quite genuinely) on the verge of a panic attack, but I still want to play this game so fucking bad.

Hate to break it to you guys, but the Big Jeffrey reference seemed accidental. None of the people involved in this ql seemed to have reason to think that name was referring to something. As much as I want to believ that it was a reference to the best ql of the year, I don't think it was

If you guys like the Firaxis dudes, Rock Paper Shotgun has a series of great interviews that shows their personality really well. They're a couple months old, so I'm sure all the data is out there; but you can see how funny and passionate they are.

This is a really awesome quick look of a game I'm sure will have many hours of my life. Looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

Really enjoyed all the jawin' too.

clearly I need to start stocking up on canned beans.

Dudes would probably miss less if they'd aim for center mass.

This is proof that Firaxis employs awesome people

Posted by hwy_61

I enjoyed that very much, and now I finally see what all the fuss is about. I never played the original XCOM, so I have zero nostalgia. I must admit, that looked pretty cool. I think I may preorder this on Steam!

Posted by HellknightLeon

Damn it Ryan I know this is GiantBomb. Stop telling me! It keeps freaking me out, like I'm not at GiantBomb or your telling me it with a wink wink kinda thing... Wait... I... I need an adult.

Posted by falling_fast

quick look ex-es are usually TERRIBLE... but this was actually really good!

thank you, firaxis, and I'm going to definitely buy yr game soon.

Posted by MrMuscle

Did they live stream their conversation about Fast 5 anywhere? Id love to listen to that.

Posted by NicksCorner

This EX was quite good. Charismatic guys from Firaxis ^^

It's finally upon us. Official Giantbomb QL, demo on Steam now and finally a look at the Sid Meier appearance that has been talked about for awhile. I hope this is going to be everything it's shaping up to be. I'm rather confident at this point though.

This QL:EX sold me on this game. It looks awesome!

@probablytuna: You'll start out getting funding from several countries but they'll all make demands on you that you can't necessarily fulfill. Ex: China & Australia are both being terrorized by aliens, which do you help? Likely you'll help the one providing more funding. You have to alienate certain countries to get in the good graces of others. But you can regain the trust of nations later, so you can min/max if you really want to.

@probablytuna: It's complex in a good way if it's anything like the original. Haven't you ever wanted to murder aliens and take them back to your lab for dissection? It's as simple as putting a few scientists on it and waiting to hear their results. Most of the game works similarly. You're only managing money really.

Well yeah but there's also the thing about pissing off certain countries if you don't pay attention to them. This is what I dread in games because my playstyle is I like to max out everything or get the best result. And things like permadeath kinda puts me off in a way but I guess that is one of the challenges and one of the game's strong points. I'm still interested, I just don't know if I will like it.

@Joby21: hahah i was wondering if i was the only one to notice that.

Not a fan of the EX Quick Looks and how they neuter the Giant Bomb crew. But I DO want to see more XCOM. Don't need to though, I'm already sold on this puppy. I'll check it out anyway...

GB Crew; you should invite industry guys like these to *normal* Quick Looks. Have them let loose and riff on other people's games. Showing off demos of their own stuff, with the shadow of a publisher's PR department and NDA's looming large... it's just not right.

Devs from most studios would never set foot near an ordinary quick look. It creates... issues. Not because they're bad people, just because of how the industry works. People who are already established personalities might be able to take a chance, but it's still pretty risky (and probably produces no real benefit for the studio, so there's no way the studio would give it the OK unless the dev demanded to do it).

Keep in mind that some studios still forbid their developers from talking in public about their work in any capacity (including posting on official forums!)

Paul Barnett featured in the XBLA Quake Quick Look and Brad Muir sat in for the Apples to Apples, $1,000,000 pyramid and Magic 2013 Quick Looks, so while I know about the special relationship with those guys and that the games were relatively minor, it does show that it could happen with some developers. Personally I would find the insight of a developer to be really interesting.

This seems all right, despite being a bit buggy in a couple of places. I just hope the UI translates well over to PC. I'm seeing a lot of...big menus.

What appeared to be buggy to you? Bear in mind that they were playing a pre-release build not the full retail build. I THINK I noticed that some units did not fall down dead even though they had just been killed. But that seemed like a minor bug that they probably fixed for retail and even if they didn't, it's not a big deal.

I always enjoy being able to rename troops. It was fun to see the GB crew march into battle. It seems like such a small detail but I become more invested in the soldiers that way.

With them briefly mentioning Gamespot in the video, I was curious about their coverage. I'm currently in the middle of watching a two hour video they did.
