When you say 'People', you are really only talking about the original series fans, and they cannot produce the amount of revenue that Capcom need to cover the expense of the game. You need mainstream gamers to add their support, which means (most of the time) selling out to pander to them. It sucks, but that's the way it goes. Niche genres simply cannot produce the kinds of numbers that justify big spending. The market has changed since the days of RE2 and Silent Hill 2 - back then, survival horror was new and edgy, and attracted people on that basis. When you combined this with decent budgets, and genuinely visionary developers, you got some magical games.

But that time is over. We live in an age where gaming stores have seperate sections for Call of Duty games, because that's what the public want. We live in an age where initially artistically credible series like Mass Effect and Dead Space etc, achieve mainstream success when they pivot away from their respective genres and just go for the action crowd's money. Its a fine line, and one that developers never manage to tread for long. They have that one big success where they think they can be all things to all people (RE4, the aforementioned Dead Space 2, Mass Effect 2 etc etc), but invariably go too far and end up alienating existing fans. But by that time, the genie is out of the bottle.

Don't judge Capcom too harshly on this - they remade RE1 and that was for my money, the greatest ever remake of any game ever made. It looked great, the dialogue was cleaned up to remove the worst offences (master of unlocking, anyone?), put in new content, and you just couldn't have asked for a more respectful, well executed job. The fact that they included what amounted to a handwritten letter to the fans thanking them for loving the series so much, if you completed every mode (including the excellent 'Invisible Enemy' mode), was the icing on the cake. It was just a perfect game IMO.

But it didn't sell well enough to allow Capcom to take that as their cue for how to proceed. Its exactly the kind of thing that the fans want (and wanted them to do to at least RE2 and on a purely selfish note, for my beloved Code Veronica too), but the money just wasn't there for it to make good business sense. And that sucks, but they aren't running a charity. Plus the fact is, whilst there were great games in the early RE catalogue, there were some howlers too. RE3 is okayish, but is very action heavy. Its pretty much just a survival game with only a few brief flashes of horror (or any story at all, to be frank). And RE0 was pure filler, and not very good at all, to be perfectly honest.

What I'm saying is, its not as easy as 'Make an old school RE game, and that's the obvious answer', because it isn't. Even when they had Shinji MIkami, not every game was great. There are lots of fans who came on board at RE4, who don't really want RE to be a survival horror in the same way we do. And just saying 'Well we were here first!' is not a compelling argument. Nobody is saying that people should just sit there and take their medicine without complaining. We're spending our money, and that gives us a right to have our say.

But the reaction to RE6 has been exaggerated. The way people (like Patrick incidentally) have laid into the game, for the primary reason that it wasn't a survival horror like the old games, shows a blatant disregard for the realities of modern games development, and the funding thereof. RE6 certainly doesn't get everything right, but at least it tries. It has more drive and more invention about it than RE5 had in its whole running time. To listen to some people, you'd think the game barely functioned at all on a technical level, or had the worst story ever etc, Which is absurd, as both aspects are fine, and certainly not deserving of such unremitting hatred and contempt.

I guess I just prefer the more serious '24' style approach of the new game, to that of RE4. A bit of camp is alright, and Code Veronica hits just the right note between high camp and genuinely unnerving cruelty and insanity etc, but RE4 was just plain stupid. A ridiculous plot (The President's daughter has been kidnapped - really?!), daft Roger Moore James Bond era antics with Salazar and his increasinly bizarre ways of trying to kill Leon. The game lost me somewhere around that part, with its jumping monks armed with rocket launchers, giant stone statues that come to life and chase you, rooms with spinning platforms, suspended over lava in the middle of a Spanish castle, guarded by mechanical dragon machines with flamethrowers... The insanity in Code Veronica was just at the edge of 'Wow, these guys are really sick in the head, but its kind of cool'. RE4 was just 'Wow... this is really, really dumb'. And again, it had nothing to do with anything in terms of RE's story - which RE6 does, and makes an attempt to build on, rather than just throw the past away completely.

So anyway, there you have it. I reckon RE6 was a decent game. I just don't make the connection that if it isn't a survival horror, then it must be bad. The only thing that matters to me (the only thing that matters to me in any game) is 'Do I like this?' And for RE6, the answer was yes.

I disagree that people would be pissed if Capcom didn't give RE such a big budget. Look what they did with MegaMan 9 and 10! People like to see their favorite franchises play like their original installments, but with an updated metagame, such as the achievements in those new MegaMans. Even if they are going to throw a huge budget at it, look at what they did with DmC!

On the other hand, regarding the first sentence of your post, it may be true that survival horror is best left to independent development. Amnesia is still probably the best survival horror game I've ever played.

I'm still surprised that there hasn't been some indie dev out there actually making old-school Resident Evil-ish games. You've got throwbacks to all kinds of games on the indie scene, and yet camera-angle-fitted, tank-control-equipped survival horror games are nowhere -- far as I know at least. I have close to zero access to PC games because my computer's utter shite, so I don't exactly keep up to date with what's being released over there.

I would love to play a new classic Resident Evil game again in any case. It's why I've always longed to somehow get a hold of RE 1.5. Part curiosity/educational purposes, part getting the chance to actually play another one of these.

The mistake you are doing is to believe you brought any of this "constructive criticism" to the debate. To my "that was unnecessary" comment its not a valid counter argument to write "but thats just the way he does it" or "he is allowed to how an opinion" or "stop using GiantBomb if you do not like it" as I am not touching on those things. These were the fanboys of GiantBomb arguments I was referring to (yours is in the middle).

I am saying that in this news update for RE6 its unnecessary to kick the game any further. FURTHER. Get it. Its a difference between "having an opinion" and being a bully, although you cant be a bully to a game of course. The point I am making is that that was UNNECESSARY.

Never played RE6, and this isn't making it any more appealing. Maybe if the PC version ever comes out and is super cheap. Maybe.

Loved RE5 and am late to the party on 6, though I held off buying because of the poor reception. I plan to pick up RE6 eventually when it's totally a bargain bin (or heavily discounted Steam) title. In that case, DLC sounds good to me.

People need to get over the state of RE - survival horror games don't sell well enough to make back the huge amount of money it takes to make modern games. RE is a well established franchise that people would be mightily pissed at if Capcom didn't shell out the megabucks on. To justify that expense, they need to make it a game that people will buy - and sadly that means actioning it up.

Sure, I'd prefer if the series was still survival horror. But it hasn't been for years (since RE4 in fact, which people rave over, despite it not being in any way scary. At least RE6 tried to make a go of it, with tons of variety, loads of missions, lots of different characters with different playstyles etc.

Yeah, it isn't the greatest game ever, but its nowhere near as bad as most say it is. They're letting their frustration over the lack of survival horror colour their feelings too much. It could stand to play better for sure, but so could plenty of games! As far as I was concerned, it was a decent game, it always had something new to show me, and I enjoyed the story. Leon's campaign sagged a bit (Chapter 3 of his campaign is just pointless), and his last 2 missions were just lots and lots of boss fights. But the other 2 campaigns were great (and Leon's does have its moments).

As for the DLC though... well, I'm not into multiplayer games of anything, so I'll pass. I'd be more than up for more story missions though.

Wait, Resident Evil 6 was bad? Guess I played the good version of the game then.

It's almost as if.. people have varied opinions on games based on their individual experiences and tastes.

Nobody should be telling you you're wrong for liking the game; there will never be a single game that every person in the world, let alone every person on a forum, will agree on completely.

I'm actually really happy for the people who played RE6 and enjoyed it - Everyone should have fun with the games they play, everyone should get entertainment for their money.

We all need to realize though that other people who play the same game might not like it, or they might like a game that we didn't, and neither party is actually going to be wrong. Someone saying "The controls felt really slippery" isn't wrong just because you felt they were fine: they didn't like the way it controlled and jumping in to say "They were fine" won't change their mind, and it definitely won't change their experience with the game.

That said: the people who write content for this website are known for being vocal in their opinions, and they're known for cracking wise about things. Maybe it isn't as funny when you like the game they're complaining about, but you need to understand and accept that it is funny for some of the people who share their opinion.

It is harmless - though perhaps annoying to some - fun.

Personally thought RE6 was an exceptional game with the best combat systems outside of Vanquish so I certainly didn't trade my copy in! Seems a bit needlessly snarky and biased comment but oh well.

This looks like it could be fun, Capcom really put a lot of work into making the different enemy types control like separate beings so getting another mode outside of Agent Hunt to use them in is great. Looking forward to the onslaught mode dlc, sending enemies to the other player's side is hilarious. Capcom is really doing some cool things with the multiplayer aspects and modes, wish all companies would be as creative.

For me, it is. I donate to Giant Bomb specifically because it's not just a dry press release factory. I'm not here for encyclopedic, humorless, just-the-facts reporting on the game industry. I come here because of the Giant Bomb crew and their personalities first and foremost. I'm wearing a Giant Bomb Flight Club shirt right now because they don't take shit like this too seriously. I don't care if I agree with everything they say. I don't want them to bite their collective tongue and try to avoid offending me.

Thats well and good but not the point. The point is that this is a press release and to write such things is unnecessary. To be honest its just rude and dishonest. I believe the phrase "poisoning the well" could be used as its not funny and only will appeal to people who like being smug and patronizing.

Rude and dishonest? They hated the game, and are making a joke about it being crappy. That's Giant Bomb.

If you want a website where such videos are posted with dry commentary, or nothing at all, try Gamespot.

If you don't like how they prepare the food here, try another restaurant.

As I wrote to you:

" Fine. But I am a user and I am allowed to say I do not like stuff so that if they suddenly lose alot of users they can know why they did so. Because they were hateful complainers who not only ditched certain game franchises but also the fans of those franchises.

You might say I am kind to GiantBomb if you think about it ;-)"

"suddenly lose alot of users"?

You've been a member for how many years, at least two from your profile, yet you have managed to apparently never read, hear, or watch anything that involves Alex because snarky sarcasm is kind of 'his thing'. I don't think he's ever held off a wry one-liner about the weaker portions of a game or movie; not about the ones he hates and not even about the ones he likes.

And nobody on the staff has "ditched" game franchises, or their fans - they've simply either stopped having fun with those games or have been disappointed with the new installments. That happens to anyone and everyone over enough time. GiantBomb is an opinion driven website and, I should hope, the majority of the members like that the guys don't hold back on scorn or praise for games. The crew tells it how they see it, and if you don't agree - well, they aren't going to change their minds. You'll either agree or disagree as is your right, but you won't change them or this site simply because you like a game they hated and don't like them making fun of it.

And calling it hateful complaining? Dude, they didn't like parts of the game - from mechanics to design choices - and people would be even more upset if they ragged on it without 'complaining' (read: explaining) why they felt they did. They complain because they have to complain, else they just seem hateful for no reason.

They make fun of games they didn't like, they make fun of games they do like, and there will be opinion injected into everything. I don't think I've ever heard them claim to be anything but a personality (and thus personal opinion) driven site so I don't see why you'd expect journalistic, scholarly, objectivity. Alex has never, as far as I have ever noticed, not inserted 'opinion' into his sub-headers or bylines and I don't know how you've seemingly gone so long without noticing.

Alex has been a staff member for a long ass time, man, and is a steady and constant contributor to this site. I doubt a whole bunch of people are suddenly going to notice, after years, that he's here and doing what he does - let alone be pushed far enough to leave the site over some dry humour about a game that a good deal of people really didn't like.

And no, I don't think anyone will really say you're kind to GiantBomb. When you're kind to something or someone you don't try to take the things that make it special and unique, the personality, and remove them. You don't try to make it a bland and sterilized regurgitater of press releases; corporate sanctioned youtube trailers; developer controlled and limited demonstations. You wouldn't threaten to leave, and promise mass exodus, over a snarky headline and some Bombcast segments that don't agree with you.

That stuff doesn't make you kind, man, it makes you seem like a child. If you want to be kind you'd be willing to overlook some of the differences of opinion you have with the staff on a couple games and enjoy the site for what it is: unique, fun, and full of character. And for that stuff to remain? Yeah, his opinion is needed.

I'm having a pretty good time playing through RE6 online with my buddy from back home. Playing on Professional, we're enjoying the (very slight) challenge and making fun of the ridiculousness Resident Evil has always shown. It was fun when we were doing it on a couch in his mom's basement, and it's still fun over the internet.

I'm not going to say it's a very good game by modern standards. If you were playing it on your own, I can see why you'd prefer a frontal lobotomy. But for $30, it offers a damn long romp through silly set pieces and poorly-written dialogues. I love it that way. I'll save Dead Space for when I want to play an actual game.

Will I be buying DLC for it? Probably not.

No thanks. Is Capcom holding out on story related DLC - like extra missions in RE 5 for example - for later in the year? All the extra modes in multi-player released so far seems boring. I shouldn't be surprised, Capcom will find ways to squeeze an extra dollar out of people.
