So Mr. Hayter posed an "informal" question to the twitterverse:
Informal Poll: How would you react if I didn't play Snake in the next Metal Gear?@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN @Konami
Now, what does this mean?
1) Is he just tired of voicing Snake?
2) Does it just not pay enough for him to justify spending his time on it? His net worth is apparently 13 million which is not surprising if you know that he's the writer for several popular movies X-Men, X2, Scorpion, Watchmen (I guess that's a cult hit, right?) IS YOUR MIND BLOWN?
3) Konami wants someone else
NOTICE THIS IN THE TWEET? He linked Kojima and Konami to the twitter post. Is this because he wants to suggest something to them? Or is this because they asked him to throw a feeler out and wanted to see the responses.
I already knew that he was a successful screenwriter so my mind is still intact! Anywhoo David sounded really gravelly during Peace Walker, even more so than when he was voicing Old Snake in MGS4. I hafta wonder if his voice simply can't take the pressure of voicing such a character anymore.
I once suggested that they lighten up Richard Doyle's voice and have him return as Big Boss in Ground Zeroes, but I dunno. It sucks to imagine that there'll be an MGS game starring Snake that isn't voiced by David, but if it's too much then I wouldn't want him to damage his cords or something for the sake of the role. Plus it'd be... interesting to hear who his replacement would be.
His Watchmen screenplay was fucking butchered too. I don't remember where I read about it but he had a lot of really good ideas (like the fact that it took place in modern times) and Alan Moore even said it was the closest thing he could imagine a screenplay getting to Watchmen. It's a real shame.

Truly high praise from that cynical bastard.
In any event, I imagine Konami or Kojima is eyeing a potential replacement. Hayter sounded really rough during MGS4 and even worse during Peace Walker. It's like he can't even emote in the voice anymore and it takes all he's got just to do it. At this point he should probably stop before he does permanent vocal damage.
Guys, what if... Nolan North is the new Solid Snake! Huh?! Think about it. Or don't.
Yeah idk I can see him being over it, or it being too hard on his vocal cords. Snake's voice has sounded more forced with every MGS game, to me.
They could get Adam Jensen's VA from Human Revolution, he's not too far off I guess?
I'd be sad to see him go : /
My question isn't really why he's asking, as I assume he has his reasons - but do I want a new Snake to be doing a Hayter impression, or give the character his own spin?
I just don't know... I think I land on the side of "fuck it, give it your own spin - just don't make it too different from who the character is now"

John Cygan could possibly work and would even make sense too, considering that Solidus Snake is the one that came closest to being a perfect clone of Big Boss. He's a great voice actor at that, so chalk it up to middle age or whatever as to why he sounds so different and go from there.
edit: Also, I love that the blurb for John Cygon's page is simply ''John Cygan is an actor''.
I have a soft spot for him, but I'd honestly like the leafblower voice to be toned down a little bit. It's fun and all, but it would be nice to hear something different for a change. Even if it's him doing a different take. That would be fine too.
I would be a little sad if he didn't voice Snake in the next game, but i wouldnt hold it against Hayter if he stopped. It certainly wouldnt be the same to me though.

Yeah, I think if he can just tone down the gravelliness it'd be fine.

I think him sounding rough in MGS4 was intentional beings as he was old as fuck and still smoking constantly.

Yeah, but that wouldn't explain why he would add even more gravel to playing an early 40-something year old Big Boss.

Killing the trademark voice of Snake? Nice.
Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he stopped voicing Snake. It's a really gravelly voice that I bet is REALLY rough on dem vocal cords.
They could probably find someone that sound just like him. It's not like his everyday voice is anything like Snake anyway.
They have to. It just wouldn't work if the character sounded like a different person. Older, but not different. Or as Yummylee suggested get John Cygan and continue along the path of sounding more and more like Big Boss.

Listen to his voice recordings from MGS1 and 2. Compare and contrast against MGS4 and his latest performance, Peace Walker. It's not gravelly anymore, it's downright death-bed raspy.

I remember an episode of Electronic Playground (show about video games that existed for something like 10-15 years in Canada) that interviewed him. In that interview he was asked specifically how he got the voice and his answer was "I drink whiskey and then spit a line." I don't know if he was joking or not, because the next thing he did was down a shot of Jack and spit some game.
Snake is now voiced by Nolan North, Troy Baker, and Yuri Lowenthal all at the same time.
Thanks, internet!
Another voice actor would be an improvement. Can't stand Snake's voice.
This is why I want Metal Gear Solid to go away. I love the series but It will just be ruined for me if another person voices snake.
Kojima will figure a way to justify Snake needing urgent surgery in which they replace his kidney with one from Meryl. Following the operation Meryl's spirit slowly takes over Snake's body and Snake can then be voiced by Meryl's voice actress.

He's already figured a way. He's found the ultimate resource for explaining anything and everything that may or may not happen in the MGS universe. So long as you remember, ''Nanomachines, son'', then the sky's the limit.
What's he got to do that's so important that he would refuse the role ? Guyver 3 ?

Or they could just kill Solid Snake off and be done with the character because after MGS4, there's really nowhere else for him to go.

I'm sure they could fit him into a cyborg body or something, if the business end were to really push Kojima enough like they did when it came time to decide if he'll shoot himself or not at the end of MGS4.... /sigh
That or they'll just keep making Big Boss prequels.

I want a Rising prequel where you play as cyborg ninja Gray Fox and fight a mad science Para-Medic.
I had no idea that people thought Hayter sounded bad as Big Boss in Peace Walker. I thought he portrayed BB's sullen and disconnected state of mind very well through his voice acting.
It would be disappointing to me if they go with another actor for Snake/Big Boss in Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain/whatever. I can understand the reasoning behind it but it will be difficult for me to associate those characters with any other voice.
Read his other tweets, it's pretty clear he presented that query because he wanted to keep voicing the Snakes but Konami had not contacted him for Ground Zeroes
E3 first reveal: Snake's new voice actor is the robotic Moonbase Alpha voice.
@hailinel: If we're talking dream prequels here (drequels...), then I would also love a game starring The Boss, potentially revolving around her relationship with The Sorrow. That and a reimagined Metal Gear 1 and 2 based around the antagonism introduced between Solid Snake and Big Boss. But I'd otherwise be happy if we could just move forward with the story, too.
Rising was at least a good start, introducing the state of the universe with its post-S.O.P. setting and all.
They could really shake it up and bring in Michael Ironside to voice Snake. In all seriousness though, If there is a game starring Snake/Younger Big Boss that isn't voiced by Hayter I will likely listen to the Japanese language track if available. David Hayter is as much a part of Metal Gear's presentation to me as Yoji Shinkawa's unique designs. That Having been said I'd be behind him all the way if he needs to leave the role. Everyone wants to move onto new things eventually and I'd love to see his work in something else, hell have him write the MGS screenplay.
