Dead Rising 3 Spoilers: How do we handle these?

How long after a game's been out does one wait before merging a pre-existing character and a "new" character that turn out to be the same one?

I decided to check out the spoiler, since it's undoubtedly going to be a while until I'll ever be able to play Dead Rising 3... That's kinda neat.
