Figured I'd give it a go now. I tried it a few years ago and got to some dream sequence at the top of a mage tower and I almost went cross-eyed from boredom. I sold my 360 copy and haven't touched it since. Its on sale for PC so....worth playing right? If anybody knows the part I'm talking about - does it last for a while because I felt like it went on forever.

The mage tower sequence is definitely one of the weakest parts of the game. There's actually a mod out there that allows you to skip it and gain all of the stat upgrades from it as well. It's god sent, and I highly recommend it. Also, since you're playing it on PC, get the HD textures mod as well, and get some decent face mods for the characters as well to make them look better, and get the white teeth mod as well. There are also some unofficial patch mods that you should definitely grab as well. Basically, just mod the shit out of the game and have fun.

Make sure to get the clean faces mod as well.

Bored me to tears.

One of the best games this generation. I know people didn't like the Fade levels but I really enjoyed it, the first time, future times I followed a guide amd ran through it as quickly as I could.

The fade sequence in the Mage Tower is easily the worst part of the game. I recommend you just use a walkthrough so you know exactly where to go at all times, otherwise its a whole lot of boring trial and error. If you know where you're going though, then it doesn't take very long at all. Great game other than that though, I think the ending is great too, so I really recommend you tough it out.

I have been recently replaying it did the fade first if you find it completely unplayable you can get a mod that lets you skip it.

The Fade is easily the worst part of the game. The rest is super great, though!

#10 Posted by Nev (565 posts) -

Yep, I replay through it atleast once a year. As everyone else said, The Fade is the biggest drag in the game.

Fairly certain there is a 'Skip the Fade' mod, even, that is a top mod on the DA Nexus, too. Maybe worth a peak if that part is too much.

That and the Deep Roads just never ended!

Other then that Dragon Age: Origins is a fantastic game. One of my favorites.

Morrigan is the greatest, isn't she?

#13 Posted by markies (62 posts) -

I quit at the same place you did, The Fade is just terribly boring.

#14 Posted by Sumbog (515 posts) -

The fade was trash, but necessary if just to get those sweet free willpower/strength/constitution points. Great game.

#15 Posted by cassus (388 posts) -

If you get the fade skip mod, this game is amazing. I just loved the setting and everything, and the glorious Baldurs Gate style combat just tickles me right in the heart.

Play it tactically. Pause pause pause pause. That's how these games are supposed to be played. Almost like turn based games. A lot of people don't grasp this fact. Look at Dave play Infinity Engine games to see how these games are supposed to be played :)

I really like this game, I got the platinum trophy on ps3 and later on bought the PC version and beat it. But your right about the fade it was so boring and in the end seemed kind of like a pointless diversion.

#17 Posted by Yummylee (22653 posts) -

I've kinda exhausted my time with Origins by this point. Completed it 4 times, including all of the DLC per character, and I've got like another 5 or so characters I created but got bored along the way or something. It's possibly my most played game of the generation... By gum did I love me my Dragon Age: Origins.

Also, yes, the fade sucks; better to get that one outta the way first, if only for the stat boosts you find in there. The Deep Roads, however, I loved.

#18 Posted by Crysack (380 posts) -

It was alright. Personally, I'd rather just go back and replay Baldur's Gate 2 for the umpteenth time.

#19 Edited by Aegon (5903 posts) -

Just stopped playing it not more than 2 minutes ago. Got creamed by the first big troll thing encounter. Should probably try that at another time.

#20 Posted by MormonWarrior (2689 posts) -

I've been meaning to give it a try as a semi-fan of the original Baldur's Gate. It's five bucks on Steam right now, but I talked myself out of it since I a) don't have a gaming PC and b) already have a massive backlog to work through.

I think I tried it on the 360 once from GameFly but I was unwilling to commit to a huge RPG at that time.

Fantastic RPG. I very much enjoyed it. Yes, the Fade level was a bit too long, but I didn't really mind it too much.

I've got the ultimate edition sitting in a pile behind my monitor. I've been avoiding starting it because I suspect it's one of those games that will take over my life for a good month.

#23 Posted by audioBusting (1663 posts) -

I got the ultimate edition earlier this year and I'm still not done with it. You can get a mod to completely skip that segment and get all the rewards, which makes the PC version the best version.

I really need to go back and finish this

#25 Posted by alanm26v5 (472 posts) -

It's part of my always growing "games of the last generation that I bought during some big digital sale and totally mean to check out at some point especially before the next sequel is released and why do I keep buying more games" collection.

#26 Posted by AlisterCat (5780 posts) -

One of my favourite games of all time. Download the 'Skip the Fade' mod and you'll have a much better time.

#27 Edited by erhard (456 posts) -

I actually enjoyed the Fade part, and I've played through it like three times now.

Also, the best game of the generation.

#28 Edited by CrazyBagMan (859 posts) -

Still? What about this game makes it something that someone would continue playing to this point if they had finished it? Am I wrong to think that either you played it, or didn't, finished it or didn't, and liked it or didn't? Not that you kept playing it to this day...

I really liked the fade intro.

I'll leave now.

#31 Edited by ll_Exile_ll (1954 posts) -

I've played the game twice and probably will go through at least one more time before Inquisition is released, it's a fantastic game. However, the fade can go fuck itself.

#32 Posted by FLStyle (4985 posts) -

Yes! Quite recently.

I've never used any mods on Origins before and there was a bunch of Origin stories and quests I'd never done either. Had a great time doing the noble Dwarf origin with extra classes, permanent dog companion and the ability to skip the Fade sequence that annoys everyone.

GODAMMIT F*CK THIS B*TCH... Guess I'll go for Leliana instead...

Picked this game back up after about a year hiatus. I dropped the game because I was stuck and didn't want to take the alternative route, I eventually did that and I started enjoying the game again.

#36 Posted by altairre (1295 posts) -

I'm playing through it for the third time at the moment (though with longer breaks). It's a really great game but it's no coincidence that there is a mod that let's you skip the Fade. That part just sucks and is a complete waste of time. Other than that one of the best games of this generation.

#37 Posted by Xeiphyer (5614 posts) -

Morrigan and Alistair are some of the best videogame characters ever.

#38 Posted by golguin (4115 posts) -

I'm playing it right now (picked it up for $5 months ago). I'm about to complete the Urn of Sacred Ashes. I believe I have everything else set to go to the Landsmeet. I think the game is okay, but I can see why people were all hyped about it back in the day. It doesn't seem to hold up.

#39 Edited by MarkWahlberg (4610 posts) -

Yes yes yes. Pro tip: Dwarf origins are the best.

#40 Posted by believer258 (12298 posts) -

@tastyhouse: Yes, you should try it for cheap. A lot of people liked it. I like parts of it but I just didn't enjoy other parts of it.

The part you are talking about it called The Fade, and you can completely skip it with this easy-to-install mod. I strongly recommend doing that, the Fade is long and terrible. You do have to do the boss fights in the Fade and see the important stuff, but that's not bad at all.

#41 Posted by Cyrus_Saren (541 posts) -

You should give it a shot. Like many said, the Fade is the worst part of the game.

Definitely one of my favorite games this generation (or should it be previous generation now?)

#42 Posted by tastyhouse (113 posts) -

awesome - thanks for the replies. I'll give it a shot - amazing you can skip the fade. Seems to be hated by everybody - glad I didn't miss some hidden artistic meaning in that turd level.

#43 Posted by Beforet (2938 posts) -

I must have gotten lucky, cause I did not hate the Fade nearly so much as everyone else did. That said, Skip Fade mods are aplenty, and it's a great game to play beyond that. Just make sure you up the difficulty if you go mage (Arcane Warrior is basically easy mode)

#44 Posted by tastyhouse (113 posts) -

Any advice on where to go after I first get to camp outside Lothering? I went and did the DLC with the haunted Keep then I did the circle tower last time. Should I start somewhere else or does it not matter?

#45 Edited by Brodehouse (10239 posts) -

Do the Brecilian Forest first why not.

#46 Posted by GERALTITUDE (3651 posts) -

The first 5-6 hours are so, so boring. I try to go back to that game all the time and it's like wading through molasses with chainmail on. And a monkey on your back. And a monkey on his back.

#47 Edited by Achaemenid (94 posts) -

Fuck the system, fade and deep roads are the best parts.

#48 Edited by dungbootle (2428 posts) -

I just bought it on sale a few days ago and have been enjoying it for many hours

One of my favorite games of all time. 2nd favorite actually.
