What in god's name happened to this page?

#1 Edited by StarFoxA (4922 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago

I'm trying to fix it, but Chrome keeps crashing. It looks like someone pasted in the wiki page dozens (if not hundreds) of times in an effort to get points.

I'm literally on my phone right now because my whole computer is frozen trying to edit this page.

Edit: This is about the Chrono Trigger page, now that this is in Editing

Err... big tip: don't go to the wiki page, it'll crash your browser.

I guess one of the Wiki mods can fix this big time

#3 Posted by StarFoxA (4922 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago

According to my phone, the article has been pasted in 34 times. The article is ~11000 words, meaning that there are now around ~374000+ words on the page. Jesus. I'd suggest avoiding the page for now.

Yep someone has indeed copy-pasted the page several times and ruined the page. It seems like a simple copy-paste job as it looks like the format repeats itself without any uniqueness in each repeat.

Taking a wild guess that someone with enough points to edit freely suddenly became a jackass? I doubt a moderator accidentally approved such a crazy edit hehe.

@ShiftyMagician: Yeah, it's just someone who has enough points trying to game the system. It's happened before with this page several times in the past, but this is more extreme than before.

Time travel.

The Endurance Run happened.

I'm moving this to the Editing forum, where it will likely get the proper attention. @StarFoxA: You're most familiar with the page, are any of the users on the "Top Editors" sidebar new? I know who isn't new... whoever did it likely didn't get as many points as they had hoped.

I was trying to fix it, but then...crash ALL the browsers.

#10 Posted by N7 (3531 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago

I'm using Firefox and all I had to do was give it a minute and it froze three times, but then it loaded.

Way to go whoever did that. Good luck sleeping tonight knowing I'm going to be under your bed.

@BoG: MasturbatingestBear is new, I don't think I've seen him there before. DougBuffone is the dude who tried to game the page in the past, and I think there was also drama with MasturbatingBear (he also tried to create character pages for each of his and his friends' MapleStory characters, if I remember correctly). FullMetal_Mac has always been up there.

It loads fine in my browser, do you want me to delete some stuff or has someone gotten in successfully?

On it. Give me a minute.

Doesn't seem to crash at least now with firefox but it is still copy/pasted all to hell & back. At least it seems easy to fix by just cutting all the duplicates out then looking at the user who did it & see if any other lesser visited pages are also affected.

My laptop can open the page. Seeing if I cant clip it.

Thanks Jeff!

Yeah, I tried my hand and cutting out the original section and then deleting the entire page and re-pasting, but that just crashed my browser.

Ok, I got rid of the copies. The images at the bottom are still there though.

@BeachThunder: I went ahead and cut all that out, the soundtrack that was listed there was just a rerelease of the other soundtracks.

This makes me wonder if the mods or staff have the ability to just revert a wiki page to a certain state before an edit.  If not, that'd be a pretty convenient feature the next time something like this happens.

We don't yet have this ability. Hopefully in the future, though!

@Turambar: There used to be a "wiki history" feature so everyone could see what edits were put in place by what users, and even which moderator approved which edit, but the feature was too buggy so they cut it, unfortunately. It'd be really helpful!

What page are you guys talking about?

Online
#24 Posted by StarFoxA (4922 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago

@Hailinel: The Chrono Trigger page had been copied and pasted about 34 times, in an attempt to get a bunch of points.

Chrono trigger.

@Hailinel: Chrono Trigger. I moved it from that forum to editing. I didn't realize that he didn't mention it in his original post...

Is it weird that reading the OP wanted me to immediately visit the page in question?

Seems like tonight was the night of wiki shenanigans.

The history exists, it's just not accessible to us mortals. It should be possible for someone on the staff to get to the bottom of this, though it may (hopefully not) mean digging through the database.
#35 Posted by StarFoxA (4922 posts) - 1 year, 1 month ago
@LordAndrew Look at the top users. Marino pointed it out to me, I don't think there's any need to check history.
