2 GameStops in the same shopping mall !
The other day I was hunting down games around town and I went to a mall where I rarely go. I saw something that my brain could not comprehend.
2 GameStops in the same (closed) shopping mall ! Sure the mall was big but this is kinda crazy right ?
Any other people saw the same thing where they live ?
Yup. Until recently, at the Serramonte Mall in Daly City, as well as the Sun Valley Mall in Pleasant Hill, there were two Gamestops within the same mall. Serramonte lost one of its stores, while I'm not sure if the Sun Valley location still has both stores there. It was always jarring to go there, but that's what happens when the competition buys out its competitors.
Not to mention that outside of the mall, within literally a one mile radius, another two Gamestops can be found. So four Gamestops within walking distance of each other. Jeez.
For small-store, large-chain brands (Starbucks, Gamestop, etc) it's worth having two shops in the same store for the real estate. Besides, the added bonus of displaying your brand to twice-ish the number of people in a mall is probably worth it as well.
" Our mall used to have three. Now only 2. "Yeah that third one must have been a little excessive.
I'm amazed that there are even two in a single mall. That alone is pretty fucked up. I mean do they sell different shit, kinda like a Macy's mens or women's, or are they just straight up Gamestops?
It should not happen because malls are supposed to have non competes meaning multiples of the same store should not exist in the mall. But lately malls have stopped with this logic. Even though strip malls nearly everywhere still have it. I doubt youll see any strip malls with 2 gamestops in them.
" @Diamond said:It's normally just straight up Gamestop. It'd be arranged differently, of course (instead of a 360 demo station, there might be a Wii demo station, or whatever), but honestly the same thing. Sometimes (and only sometimes) you might find differing prices at the two different stores (mostly for used games) but most of the time, it's literally the same thing. It's not like you're getting a Gamestop: PC & Wii Only store or anything." Our mall used to have three. Now only 2. "Yeah that third one must have been a little excessive. Same stores, same goods. And get this, the two that are still around are just a few hundred feet from one another. There are 6-7 stores between them.@Diamond said:

But in their defense, one was an EB Games years ago.
" The mall by my place has one inside and one right across the street. "I've seen this, but not two in the same mall.
Living in the Twin Cities, I have the Mall of America. Double everything in there. It has been a while since I was there and the 4th floor wasn't being used much. Wonder if I would see another one in there...
In greenfield, WI near where I live there are two inside the southridge mall, and another two across the street from each other less than a mile away.
Back when you could make big credit flipping games between them and gamestop it was real nice to be able to trade in 8 copies of something in one quick trip. I dunno how all 4 of them stay open. 3 of them are pretty awful, one is nice to go to. The employees are super-jerks at the others.
" @CrazedMaverick said:" The mall by my place has one inside and one right across the street. "same here. also have another one a few miles from those 2. "
I used to live in a town that also had that set up. One in the mall, one at the end of the mall's parking lot outside, and a third across town.
Also, I'm amazed that the mall management would be cool with something like that. Working in a mall setting myself, I find that usually those people are anal as shit when it comes to store layout.
In Greeley we used to have a Gamestop across the street from a mall that had a Gamestop, and then ANOTHER Gamestop cat-eye corner across the street from that one.
Needless to say, they ended up closing one.
Most of them used to be other game stores, but they were all eaten by Gamestop eventually. The Babbages I used to work at had that happen I believe. And given that Gamestop makes money off of used games primarily, it's probably cost effective to have two stores worth of used games available to potential buyers coming to the mall.
Jesus, that's a lot of people pushing pre-orders in a surrounding area. I think my head would cave in if I saw that many in a mall and the general area around it.
it's an odd setup, but oh well, they pay me and i do my job.
They want to hold a monopoly over the mall to prevent any other competitions from rising up. Its the same scenario as when I saw two Starbucks on the opposite corners of the same street at the intersection, or how there's BestBuy and Futureshop at the same mall (Futureshop is owned by BestBuy).
Mine has two Gamestops but to be fair one of them was a local video game store that got bought out by Gamestop.
The Opry Mills Mall is like that, but one of them kept there EBGames logo. I don't know if it's like that now because of the flood.
