Since we're more than halfway done with the year and everyone's already talked about their current GOTY candidates, I want to bring the discussion to the games of yesteryear for the inevitable 2012's 2011 Game of the Year. In truth, it's odd because I've found myself playing more games made 2, 3, even 4 years ago instead of anything from last year. However, the game from last year I keep coming back to is Binding of Isaac. The randomly generated floors and powerups keep the game from feeling stale, and constant updates to the game have added new items and bosses, especially with the Wrath of the Lamb DLC. The art style is also weirdly charming because it's so interesting to look at as Isaac becomes more and more disfigured with each item he gains. So, what are everyone's 2012 2011 GOTY prospects?

I bet it's Skyrim for most people. At least those not playing on PS3, because they get the DLC.

For me, it's probably Saints Row the Third.

Sadly I am in that camp. I like Skyrim a whole lot, but I guess I have this thing with Bethesda games where I just sort of stop around halfway through the main quest. Happened in Oblivion and Fallout 3 too.

Dungeons of Dredmor is mine.

Skyrim. I've actually gotten more fun out of it now since its actually fixed and playable now.

Dark Souls is a 2011 game, right? Yeah, Dark Souls.

I have exactly the same problem, even though I loved Skyrim. I'll probably go back to it when I get back home, finish the whole thing then get the DLC, find some good mods as well.

Radiant Historia, I think?

Meh, the main quest isn't really the point anyway. Although Skyrim did have the best main story of any Bethesda game to date.

I've done everything there is to do in that game. Give me another recommendation.

I played most of my Total War Shogun 2 in January and February 2012, so that is absolutely my front-runner right now. Although I bet that once I properly dive back into Skyrim - have barely touched it after playing 200 hours last year - that'll take the #1 spot.

#12 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

@LordAndrew:

From 2011? Xenoblade Chronicles.

#13 Posted by LethalKi11ler (1407 posts) -

Battlefield 3. Simply baffled by how good that game is

Skyrim.

Deus motherfucking Ex HR

Wait wait wait, does 2012's 2011 GOTY mean a game I played in 2011 that I'm still playing, or a 2011 game that I've played for the first time in 2012 and enjoyed the most?

#16 Posted by GunstarRed (5209 posts) -

The Binding of Isaac. It's a game that I was pretty meh about to begin with. It is not only one of my most played games this year, but an all-time favourite.

#17 Posted by That1BlackGuy (217 posts) -

For me personally as far as more popular titles go I'd got to give my nod to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I really loved that game.

#18 Posted by kindgineer (2734 posts) -

Planetside 2

#19 Posted by GJSmitty (651 posts) -

Skyrim for me.

But my 2012's 2010 game of the year is Civ 5.

#20 Posted by cthomer5000 (800 posts) -

Batman Arkham City for me. Didn't play it until 5-6 weeks ago.

I didn't really like Arkham Asylum all that much, and was very done with it by the time i finished it. Arkham City i thought was fantastic though, and a really great looking game. Also just incrediblely meticulous job coloring the world with voice acting, recordings, etc. After playing it a ton i was surprised how dismissive they were of it last year in the GOTY discussions.

That's a good one, I didn't get to that till this spring and I played it quite a bit. So good, I like it way more than Napolean!

Both count for the illustrious 2012 2011 GOTY.

#23 Posted by PillClinton (3291 posts) -

Well, Alpha Protocol is definitely my 2012's 2010 GOTY, and honestly I'd have to say Battlefield 3 for 2011. It's still probably the game I continue to get the most enjoyment out of this year that came out last year.

#24 Posted by slowbird (1719 posts) -

Forza 4, based on playing time alone.

#25 Posted by Ramone (2972 posts) -

FIFA 12 or Swords and Sworcery (I don't know if that counts because the IOS version was released last year but the PC version which I'm playing was released this year)

#26 Posted by BeachThunder (11987 posts) -

Definitely Isaac; to my own surprise, I managed to play that more this year than I did last year

Easily

Gotta go with Space Marine, purely because it's one of the few 2011 game I've played this year, well than and NHL 12.

#29 Posted by 49th (2763 posts) -

Always Batman.

#30 Posted by laserbolts (5323 posts) -

Dark Souls by far.

#31 Edited by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

The Binding of Isaac is definitely 2012's 2011 soundtrack of the year, at the very least. Probably Dark Souls for the game. I expected to get into The Witcher 2 more than I actually ended up; and I thought I was finished with Dark Souls a while back.

#32 Posted by thegoldencat7 (1497 posts) -

Did I even buy any games last year? Fecked if I can remember.

#33 Posted by Bleeble (95 posts) -

Dark Souls or King of Fighters XIII.

#34 Posted by wjb (1665 posts) -

Skyrim or Dark Souls.

#35 Edited by MEATBALL (3263 posts) -

Edit: Woops, completely missed the 2011 part of the topic.

It's definitely Skyrim, I've probably played about 70 hours of it this year on top of the 100 from last year.

I played all of that game this year, though it didn't really take me that long to complete everything on it. Great game though.

For me, probably Skyrim or Dark Souls, which seems to be the common response from this thread.

#37 Posted by Soapy86 (2622 posts) -

I don't think it counts, but Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Fuuuuck MGS2 and 3 are so good. If that doesn't count then Dark Souls.

The Witcher 2. No contest.

#41 Posted by Giantstalker (1660 posts) -

Right now, Arkham City. That game really shines on subsequent playthroughs, especially on a good PC.

#42 Posted by papercut (3501 posts) -

Need For Speed The Run...What?

#43 Posted by Svenzon (720 posts) -

Skyrim probably.

#44 Posted by AndrewB (7633 posts) -

Still Skyrim for me. I haven't bought the DLC and I'm not sure I will, but the game proper is still quite the experience, made even greater now that I have a PC capable of running it maxed out with mods that improve the world and city density.

#45 Posted by NoobSauceG7 (1250 posts) -

Dark Souls.

#46 Posted by HH (610 posts) -

skyrim

#47 Posted by Mnemoidian (955 posts) -

Uhm, barely played any 2011 games... plenty of 2010 and earlier, but...

It'd have to be Battlefield 3, as I've played that more (and intend to play some more) than Trine 2 and Driver: San Fransisco... which are probably the other 2 2011 games I've played so far this year. I still love Saint's Row, but I've not really touched it since I finished the Trouble with Clones.

Seeing how busy I expect the rest of the year to be, I doubt I'll get around to any other 2011 games.

#48 Posted by BulletproofMonk (2722 posts) -

Deus Ex: HR, definitely.

#49 Posted by ShaggE (6472 posts) -

Arkham City. What an experience that game was.

#50 Posted by Yummylee (21751 posts) -

Gears of War 3 easily. Such an absolutely fantastic game; that was basically what kept me afloat in gaming throughout the entirety of June & July. That and Spelunky, which is also pretty damn good as well.
