Alright so my 4th 360 just died. This is the first one that didn't RROD - rather, it just freezes about a minute into gameplay.
My repair history looks like this - launch console died -> was out of warranty so went out and bought an elite -> Original console went back into warranty so sent in and got sent back a refurb -> Elite died, got sent a refurbed Elite. In guess in retrospective that's good compared to how some have had it.
I logged onto Xbox.com and, as expected, the console is out of warranty and the replacement is sitting at $99.99 (what a dumb number, just make $100).
I also have a Wii and PS3. I counted my 360 games on my shelf and I have more then I should *cough*92*cough*. I know MS loses money with each console sold, and makes it up in software. I feel as if the customer who's dropped that sort of money in his hobby, should be in a position of power with MS. Has anyone had any luck haggling with MS on repair costs?
360 Died - Anyone had any luck with MS Support?
Buy an arcade or do some research online on how to fix it yourself, it's out of warranty so crack 'er open and fiddle with it's insides.
All you do is lie and say it is the Red Ring of Death. I have done this every time and I get a new console back in a week. Unless your console is older than 3 years, just do that. Unless that IS your problem, but the way I am reading it, you didn't mark it as RROD (because it isn't), and the warranty time on anything else is a lot less.
Their Customer support is awesome. Once, I bought the wrong DLC pack for Fallout 3 (I bought the French version of Operation Anchorage, there was no (FR) on the title) and asked for a free controller - and I got it. I just sent a friends 360 away on the 15th of December and it got back on the 30, too. Pretty impressive especially over Christmastime. Now I'm gonna sell it because she doesn't want it :P
It will take about 2 weeks to get your 360 back. Their customer service has always been great to me.
Wait, why do you need to pay? When I got this one back, it said that the serial number is brand new and that the contract for the Warranty starts all over again. It even says so on the little peice of paper I'm holding in my hands, right at this moment.
You don't have to break it. My last two consoles did not have RROD. I just said they did, and I sent it in for free, and got both consoles back within a week. This has worked out for everyone else I have known to do it as well. I really don't think they check (I don't think they have the time). If they did, then I don't think they would have sent me a different console no questions asked. Just in case though, I throw in a note saying that sometimes it takes a little while for the RROD to come up, and that it isn't always right away, but that it ALWAYS happens. I know they won't check then.
You don't actually have to cause it to happen. It has worked for me and several others, so I don't see why it wouldn't for you. I don't see the harm in trying either way.
their customer support is awesome i've yet to have a problem with it in the 360 generation i had a few problems on the original xbox but it was still awesome even then.
Why not just look for a refurb on someplace like Kijiji or Cragislist? Make sure the serial number isn't used, though, and check to see if it's in warranty. They can be bought for really cheap and you'll have another warranty on your hands. There is bound to be some kid who doesn't know what happened, haha.
" Called MS - aren't willing to even willing to meet me half way with repair costs. Bummer. "then you didn't complain enough, as it is its like 100-130 bux for repair now which isn't bad, but beyond that you should still be able to maintain the claim of this thing is freezing for no reason, you shouldn't have to pay at all or even as much.
If it truly bothers you to pay for the repair or refurb *somethings they even send out a whole new machine* then sell your 92 games, and your broken 360 and buy a ps3 i see no real alternative for you if it bothers you that much, but remember the ps3's warrenty program is just as bad i've heard loads of horror stories about it on in-warrenty units, and those out of warrenty? they are just as adament even more so about you paying to have it fixed even on an issue thats their fault. *i do believe the repair price has dropped on the ps3 as well though im unsure*
Yeah - the problem is i used to work CS for an worldwide company is so I hate to get irate-customer on them becuase I know what it's like. I found kindness works better.
Here is how the conversation went.
Talked to their first level person - got me through to a resolution specialist.
Explained the situation to the resolution specialist, didn't seem interested in working. I pointed out that every console MS sells they lose money and recoups it in game sales. I own over 90 games which equates to 18 games a year. They'd more then recoup the cost. I also pointed out I own the other consoles however have shown loyalty to them, however am at the point where I'd just as soon give my business to another company. They'd recoup that $100 in software sales in no time.
Didn't fly. I said I understood that her hands may be tied in the matter however used to work customer service and wanted to know know how I could escalate this for review or to a supervisor. She told me "Sorry but this is the end of the road for escalation" (bullshit!). I sent an email to MS outlining much of the same points. I doubt it will make a difference.
Like I said, I already own a PS3 and Wii - so if it boils down to it, I'll totally just sell my 360 games to GameStop which when they get flipped - doesn't create a profitable happy video game industry.
microsoft support is just alright. the last time i had E74 error and hard drive failure. i got the E74 error fixed. i went online my warranty expired a day before the problem. i called the guy said they can fix it. a week later i go to my friend's house and i have hard drive problem. i call them i had to argue with the guy for them to send me a new hard drive. i told i wanted to speak to another person. they fixed that problem.
I'm going to try again tomorrow. No disrespect to anyone from India - but spoke to an outsourced desk when I called.
The last lady I spoke to yawned when I talked to her so whatever.
The frustrating part is reading the terms of use on the warranty page - it says RRoD is a 3 yard warranty. If i need to, I'll plug the thing in, in my furnace room and let it run until it gives me the RRoD.
My whole thing is the principal behind the repair. I spent $300 on my launch console that died. When it died, it was out of warranty so ended up getting an elite which was $475 at the time. $775 on a single console? Thats nuts. Now asking me to spend an additional $100...unreal.
When my 2th Xbox 360 bricked I just did the support by the website it was easy for me and it didn't take long to get it back like around a week or less.
Alright the story has a happy ending - called Xbox again today and spoke with a new dude, very helpful. Tried to say it wouldn't be covered but after pleading my case, got it taken care of at no charge. Made sure to tell his supervisor how awesome he was.
As long as the console gets back in time for Bioshock 2 I'll be ok.
No 360 gives me time to spend with Demon's Souls, Okami (Wii), finish up MadWorld, and sink some time with Silent Hill Shattered Memories.
I install every game I play to prevent it from crapping out now-a-days. I've only had 1 360 break on me. It was a launch console and surprisingly wasn't RROD. And sadly, that meant no extended warranty. Instead I had a problem that I later found out was also common which was the video would go out (you'd get black screen with white dots) but you can hear the 360 working. You'd hear the dashboard come up and everything; you just couldn't see anything.
Luckily I got a free 360, later, with a HDTV I bought. Sadly it is one of the older models that I think is still prone to RROD. So i try to do everything in my power to make sure it doesn't die.
The weird thing is that I also install EVERYTHING to the hard drive to. I was streaming netflix just fine, hopped into play the Saboteur and thats when it all started. Netflix wouldn't even stream after that so I don't think it was an issue with the optical lens - as last time I had to send in my console for repair that was the issue and I would just get an "unable to read disc" error.
