Hey forum. I'm in dire need of your expertise.

Thing is, I feel like staying up playing a game all night long. Tradiotinally I've been known to do this with classics like Civ, World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. However, I need a new dosage, something fresh.

My PS3 is currently...elsewhere...so my options are 360 and Mac. Ideally I'd like a game for my Macbook Pro that I can play while watching TV cus I like having the TV on while just playing a game through the night. I'm gonna feast on frozen pizza, chocolate, potato chips and Coke. Hopefully that tells you the kind of mood I'm in. You know, that lazy-just-wanna-chill-with-games mood.

Any and all suggestions are welcome, so unleash your knowledge below.

EVE Online, but you'd have be crazy. At least it runs in OS X and you can try it for free.

Sid Meyer's Pirates! is super cheap, and I've played it all night multiple times, but you'd need boot camp.

@MikkaQ: EVE Online is in theory the worlds greatest game. But after at least 50-60 hours playing, I still feel like a total newcomer. It's hard as heeell, and it'll be tough getting into all those mechanics again, but it's certainly an option.

^Hes right about Skyrim and Terraria taking up a crap ton of your time. Especially Terraria because it all blends together into one play session. In the first weekend I got Terraria I played it for more than I played TF2 after around 6-7 months of owning it.

@Breadfan: Torchlight would have been a great option, but I've played that to death.

I'm currently playing Skyrim on the PS3, but I have my PS Tripple on my dorm, and I'm at home visiting my folks.

Terraria (and Minecraft) have already gotten all the attention they'll get from me.

Keep 'em coming, and we'll get somewhere!

I would go with TF2, you can put a ton of time into that game. Either that or something like Terraria

I was about to say Civ 5 since the turn-based play is perfect with watching TV. I'll second Torchlight and Castle Crashers if you haven't played it yet. It's a tad on the short-ish side but there's a reason to keep going back to it.

Edit:

There's also Hack, Slash, Loot if you like roguelike games.

@GJSmitty: Not really a big fan of TF2. I know, blasphemy... Maybe something more in the style of Starcraft or Age of Empires? Man, I wish Microsoft would just man up and release Age of Empires Online for Mac. I played the shit out of that game when I had a Windows PC.

STALKER would be great, definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

TF2, great game as well, playing a few matches is a great way to waste time.

Killing Floor is pretty good for time wasting as well, plus it's a great game as well.

Battlefield 3's multiplayer is pretty great too and there's still a large community (on PS3 and that was probably the least popular version) after the recent update and custom servers' introduction. I don't know if FPS are your thing but it's the best one out there at the moment.

So.. 360.. How's about some Witcher 2? Or if you're not in the mood for Witcher 2, might I suggest Witcher 2.

I have stayed up all night with the following games: various Civilization games, X-Com: UFO Defense, NHL EHM 2007, Borderlands and Skyrim. If any of those appeal to you, I'd heartily recommend them.

@SuperSambo: I'm really considering Fez, but I'm not sure I'm ready to wrap my mind around that shit yet. Maybe something more casual, you know, with a social aspect. I really liked playing Guild Wars and Diablo back in the day, or World of Warcraft for that matter.

You can easily jump back into Guild Wars as it is still active, and easy to get running on a mac

Mass Effect 3? For some reason the multiplayer is strangely compelling, find it hard to stop once I start.

amazing game and more people should play it. It's also quite long and the story, combat, loot lust and leveling will suck you in for unhealtely long play sessions!

I think some of this depends on what type of player you are. I know I can blow hours and hours in Saints Row The Third because I keep remodeling my character and "role-playing" her within the storyline. Skyrim also takes up huge chunks of my free time on minor incidentals because I love those little details. If any game that affords me a level of creativity for my character, I'll spend a significant proportion of time altering it just as I would change my own clothes everyday.

@sthusby: You don't have any 24/7 stores that might carry it? If there was any game to just dive into for an extended period of time, Witcher 2's the one to do it to.

The only other game I can see being feasible for a long period is Fez, but a game like that would really benefit from putting it down for a little bit so you can work on puzzle subconsciously.

Edit: Found it. http://www.giantbomb.com/games/?sort=release_date There's no way to filter it out to XBLM only though.

Aren't the Total War games available on Mac? I've heard that those are good and you seem to like strategy.

Also, if you haven't played it yet then you can play through The Orange Box on Mac. It's easily downloadable.

Left 4 Dead works on the Mac

Portal 2 is on the Mac.

Counter Strike Source is on the Mac.

On 360, Trials Evolution, Battlefield 1943, Saints Row 2, Halo Reach, Red Dead Redemption, Halo Wars, Dragon Age Origins, Reisdent Evil 5, Gears of War 1, Oblivion, and many others are available online for download.

Yeah I'm at the same point in the game, and it's only just enough time to hear the rock hit the bottom of the well. I can see how deep it is, and I was indimidated away for like 8 months. Kinda tempted to get back into it now that I have more free time.

I realize that we're probably done here, but the thematic continuation of the games listed in OP is Counterstrike.

I would suggest finding a nice long adventure game to sink your teeth into if you're into that sort of thing. Perhaps the Longest Journey? Played that straight through.

WoW. You could spend hours playing that game and not know it. I'm telling you man I wanted to play it for only 2 hours once and before I knew it 4 hours went by. It's perfect for an all night play session.

I have stayed up for the last couple of weeks playing The Witcher 1 & 2 i don't no if its the kind of game that you want to go in to lightly for a nice nights playing as it can piss you off at points. But The Witcher 1 is cheap on Steam and 2 is now out on Xbox.

Hope this helps

I know this thread is old, but to jump in, The Witcher (the first one) just came out for Mac and its only $10 on steam. I saw it on another site for $5 as well. The system requirements for that don't seem very extreme either.
