I started watching the kerbal quicklook and all of a sudden an ad for tampons played...

Is that giantbomb's target audience? Or did I have a drug free acid trip?

#2 Posted by LikeaSsur (1495 posts) -

Females playing video games is not as uncommon as you think.

#3 Posted by Kenobi (360 posts) -

Well my point was it wasn't videogame related at all. I remember Jeff saying that they were going to control the ads on the site. Where as the ad looked more like it was place by an automatic ad deal/agency.

I suppose if it makes money. Was strange still.

Tampons are great when my bro has gone down during a firefight and I need to quickly revive him.

Yes, we're part of the target audience even if we might be in the minority.

Tampons are good for catching blood.

Maybe the OP thinks that female gamers don't use tampons.

Was it youtube? I know Youtube has those tampon ads.

Statistics on this site suggest that female targeted advertising would be a dismal, useless failure.

I wonder how psyched female gamers are to see tampon ads.

That's no longer the case now that they're at CBSi. They have an ad team that handles everything without input from them. Somebody asked and he confirmed after that HTC EVO site skin.

I wouldn't imagine the hype level being very high, maybe close to zero.

#13 Posted by xaLieNxGrEyx (2605 posts) -

Sometimes I just use them and pretend I'm a lady.

#14 Posted by BionicRadd (617 posts) -

I hate all advertising equally, so I don't understand the problem. I don't want any of the garbage the advertising industry sells me, so for all I care, they can ads for diapers and stool softeners. I will ignore them all with equal disdain.

#15 Posted by CL60 (16906 posts) -

Wait.. Those are for females?

#16 Posted by NekuCTR (1663 posts) -

Go tell Jeff to tell his floor manager to tell the corporate office to tell the ad team to suck less. You should get a response back in about 3 to 4 years.

Yeah, especially if they don't use them. ;)

I know I get psyched for seeing man stuff. What is wrong with these ads again?

#19 Posted by superpow (226 posts) -

I think internet video ads are just broken in general. The few times I watch something on youtube, I keep getting random japanese baseball or olympic-related commercials. I also got a few french movie trailers but that makes a bit more sense.

Reading some of the stuff written on these forums, I'm not so sure it's just females that need them.

Let's see a cool Quicklook, click play.. hmm OH WHAT?! Double the absorption for ALL DAY comfort and security?! Shit, I better get to Duane Reade RIGHT NOW.

Giant Bomb has zero control of the ads put on the site.

So uhh... Quicklook of Tampax Pearl, any ideas when that's hitting the site?

Shhh. Don't try and fight it. Who knows what would happen if people on the forums didn't have a new thing to be outraged about every week or so.

#29 Posted by jorbear (2517 posts) -

Tampons are the dietary staple of Kerbals.

#30 Posted by Jrinswand (1695 posts) -

We have already established that women are most definitely not GB's main demographic. These boards are something like 95% male.

#31 Posted by MonkeyKing1969 (2564 posts) -
#32 Posted by Twiggy199 (496 posts) -

I keep getting surveys which makes everything on the site un-clickable until said survey is complete, also they have no close option wich is outrageous.

#33 Posted by Khann (2783 posts) -

I have ads for the Marines (and occasionally some spammy looking shit for Amazon gift certificates) showing on the site at the moment.

Yeah, that's fucking well targeted when I live in New Zealand.

#34 Posted by Make_Me_Mad (3019 posts) -

The Ads that go up on the site are just something that the GB team have no control over. I can't wait to see what they lose control of next month.

Their bladders. It has to be their bladders.

How long before Jeff gets fired from CBSi again and we start the process all over again?

Actually I think the couple of years that Jeff and Co. spend trying to get people to buy adverts (and failing) will have softened his stance against site skins etc. Unless someone from marketing tries to influence editorial again, I suspect he has learn to grin and bare it.

To put it crudely. He agreed to this arranged marriage and as a result has to learn to take it occasionally (xmas, birthdays, etc) in return for the promise of an easy life.

#38 Posted by CosmicBatman (317 posts) -

If these ads are strategic they think we love fried chicken and booze. The only commercials I've seen are for KFC and Smirnoff.

#39 Posted by medacris (643 posts) -

@Jrinswand: That's not saying that we could totally change that, though. I'm all for bringing more women to the site, or heck, even a female staff member.

As for ads, I have mixed feelings about them. Yes they're annoying, and yes, unfortunately we live in a world where they need to exist, otherwise nobody'd sell anything. I don't think they actually ever cater anything to specific regions or keep tabs on what's relevant to each person, though.

#40 Posted by crusader8463 (14413 posts) -

It's their subtle way of calling you a pussy for not subscribing.

#41 Posted by sissylion (679 posts) -

Outrageous. Giant Bomb has always supported the use of sanitary pads, and now they're reversing their decision in order to make money? This site has gone down the drain.

#42 Posted by Insectecutor (1177 posts) -

Be thankful it's not like Tested where they advertise magic facial slime for women who are either dead or near death. At least tampon ads target an age group that might benefit from them.

But how common are females who are still unsure of what tampon brand to buy?

It's one of those things that just seems too futile to advertise. Like toothbrushes.

#45 Posted by Demoskinos (14562 posts) -

Well seeing as OP isn't a subscriber he is obviously using the YouTube player and Giantbomb has no control over that.

I should mention that soldiers have used tampons to save peoples lives before... just by clogging bullet wounds to save their asses from bleeding to death until they get to the medic then to a doctor to fully heal them.

Just saying is all.

What does that have to do with an ad, though?

SOLDIERS NEED TAMPONS! Of course!

#49 Posted by TobbRobb (4579 posts) -

@Jay444111: I already regret asking this.

Why did they have tampons on the battlefield to begin with?

#50 Posted by coakroach (2488 posts) -

Army of Two.

In stores now.
