@Brendan: Some food for thought...The period that Assassin's Creed takes place when Europe plunged into The Dark Ages which lasted about 300 years. Technology and science not only stood still but actually took a couple of steps backwards. Most of the knowledge gained by the ancient romans was either lost, forgotten or suppressed by the Catholic Church. If the dark ages never happened our technology and knowledge today would have been forward 300 years.
@Mordukai: Not necessarily. The Irish people were the ones who saved the modern world thanks to their monks. The Irish were so far away from mainland Europe it escaped most of the dark ages and was able to rewrite most of the Roman Knowledge (Not all of it caused the few people who troubled the Irish were Vikings and they were known to attack the monks). So, theoretically, we are right where we are supposed to be.
