Since last week's bombcast talked about the new achievement tracking system I've been refreshing the site anxiously awaiting the new system. I love numbers and stats so it's almost as good as waiting for christmas morning to me (almost ;) ).
Anyone else anxiously waiting for Giant Bomb's achievement tracking system?
"D. What is the tracking system?"They talked about it on the last Bombcast quite a bit. Basically, it is going to track your achievements and compare them to all the other bombers on the sight. Then, its going to take those comparisons and give you a rank (F-S) on how you compare, using a bell curve.
I'm kind of excited to see it, though it makes me kinda wanna delete all those games I rented and got one or two achievements in. All those Fs will just crush me.
That said, I fully expect at least a B+ in Mass Effect.
I don't remember if it was officially decided but if you completed all achievements for a particular game you automatically get an S rank for it.
"I don't remember if it was officially decided but if you completed all achievements for a particular game you automatically get an S rank for it."Well really, that's the only way you can do it. If you got all the points, no one is going to have more points than you, so its only fair that if you have everything, you get the S. The question then becomes if that is the ONLY way to get an S, because that is a lot harder for some games than others.
What I'm getting is... they're implementing a system/feature on this site which enables them to analyse the users gamertag, ID and place all those earned achievements and trophies on this site as well as offering a bell curve rating: A+ etc. Right?
In other words, Giantbomb creates system, steals data, publishes data and gives rating.
"mordecaix7 said:I think that's where some different aspects of the bell curve will come into play. Hopefully they'll have input some type of cutoff that says "if no one has the full score, then the top 5 or 3% get the S-Rank" or something like that."I don't remember if it was officially decided but if you completed all achievements for a particular game you automatically get an S rank for it."Well really, that's the only way you can do it. If so then that means when someone finally does achieve a full score in a game, the curve is broken and the full score is now in effect.
"What I'm getting is... they're implementing a system/feature on this site which enables them to analyse the users gamertag, ID and place all those earned achievements and trophies on this site as well as offering a bell curve rating: A+ etc. Right?"Yes except they mentioned there will be some extra stats and things to go with that. The reason for the Bell Curve is because your letter rank (F-S) is determined by comparing all other Giant Bomb users.
The drawback to this system? PS3 is excluded; no trophies. Sony hasn't made that data available to anyone yet.
Once I heard the words bell curve, I dropped what I was doing and signed up to the site.
Sad, I know.
I dunno. It sounds awesome, but I've got a scar on my gamertag: A lonely five gamerpoints from Perfect Dark: Zero, which I don't own any more. *sigh*
"I don't really care about it much, although maybe once they incorporate Steam achievements (if they find a way) I'll be slightly more interested"Don't own a 360, however I do own Steam, along with a handful of games achievement ready. Would like to see something worked out for this.
"Did the not say that they were going to do (or are working on) incorporating both steam and WOW achievements? I don't quite remember."They definately said something about WoW achievements, but I don't remember anything about steam.
Personally, I've never been THAT bothered about achievements, and I feel the same about this system, but it's a cool addition to the site.
not directly stealing data but in a way."
No. this data is freely available for everyone to use. It's the same data sites like 360voice, TrueAchievements, Mygamercard and others use. they aren't hacking into some database and take stuff from there, they're just pulling stuff from these open data feeds and throwing them into their achievement system.
"I'm interested to see how it'll pan out. And comparing stuff with the Giant Bomb community will be fun. It's coming sometime this week right?"from what I understand it should be sometime this week. *crosses fingers*
Anything that garners more interaction with the Giant Bomb community is a win in my book :)
"PureRok said:No, not even in a way."Scieran said:not directly stealing data but in a way.""In other words, Giantbomb creates system, steals data, publishes data and gives rating."They're not "steal(ing) data". It's all available for use by anyone who would use it."
"Since last week's Bombcast? I've been waiting impatiently for this since we detailed it on the Bomb Should Have A Face/Giant Bomb IRC Giant Bomb Site Updates Town Hall!"Sorry but that's when I first heard about it.
I'm not looking forward to people using posted achievement scores and trophies as arguments to dismiss someone else's opinion.
"You only have 120 points in that game and I have over 900 points, therefore my opinion is much more valid and yours is crap."
Yeah, that will be fun.
"I'm not looking forward to people using posted achievement scores and trophies as arguments to dismiss someone else's opinion.I trust that our community isn't as retarded as that.

Despite not owning a 360 or being bothered to do all the small metagame tasks to get more than 30% trophies in most games it seems like a really cool system for those that will use it.
"No trophies = No interest"It's a great shame that Sony hasn't made trophy stats available. :(
It's going to be awesome. I am continuing to play Fallout 3 to get a good grade in that forum. I have 50/64 achievements so far.

Anyway, I was just expressing that it's one of the upcoming features I'm really excited for.
Almost as much as the Giant Bomb "I did somethings"

Hm, I don't remember any talk about this, so it might have happened during your prep session. Obviously there was some talk about Giant Bomb achievements, but I hadn't heard anything about tracking Xbox Live/WoW achievements until the latest Bombcast.
