Edin obviously made it to bring IGN's somewhat shady front page decisions to the community's attention, in order to get consensus on whether what they're doing is ok or not. People mostly are responding by telling him how to avoid IGN, as if he made the thread to get advice. I'm sure he knows that he doesn't have to go to IGN, but, like it or not, they are a major player in videogaming news and content, and it's ok for the community to have an opinion on the way they present their information. I think it's fine to bring it to the attention of the community if they're doing something slightly underhandedly, and people giving Edin advice on the matter are not understanding that that's the point of the thread.

With that in mind, I think the least dickish response is "Huh, that's a little messed up. It doesn't really change my opinion of IGN, though; they've sucked for a long time."

Is it at all possible they are just trying to keep articles they think are relevant from being drowned out? IGN posts a lot of articles and seems that might happen.

I don't have a problem with IGN. I recognize that they post a lot of stuff everyday and they have huge teams working hard to get it up there. Although I am kind bummed that 1UP is now part of IGN, but I suppose the alternative is worse.

Rather, what I think is actually happening, is that they have a carousel system of sorts, which works behind the scenes, and resurfaces articles to the front page. I'm certain that if they were actually trying to fool users into thinking they were all freshly written and posted articles each time, they wouldn't make it so blatantly obvious when an article was last edited.

This. Most sites switch content off the front page so often that stories sometimes get buried during busy news cycles, and so they often have systems that automatically move older stories back up to the front if they get a spike in hits. It's so common as to be innocuous. People just want to see it as shady because they (legitimately) dislike IGN for other reasons. It's hardly worth noticing, let alone complaining about.

I do think it's shady, because alot of times they post really small articles to tell you something that really is just spam on the main page to get more page views.

@Edin899: Then at least half of the sites on the internet are being shady, because the practice is incredibly widespread. I'm not saying that we should encourage the practice (or like it), but suggesting that it is somehow misleading or underhanded or devious by calling it "shady" seems wrong to me. You call it spam, but they only get pageviews if someone clicks on the link. Sites do this to make sure people read their content. Yes, it gets pageviews, but sites like IGN have high content cycle rates. It makes sense for them to do this sort of thing, just like it makes sense for most other sites to do this. It keeps the homepage fresh and the content in the cycle. There are better ways of doing this, but IGN's approach is the easiest.
