I picked what I believe to be a little bargain today, a virtual instant PSone collection.
Backtracking a little first. I never got into the Playstation generation in the 90’s. I stuck with the N64 and was never disappointed. I once tried a PSone game at a Disney store and got hopelessly bored waiting for it to load the game and that set my mind forever.
What bothered me about the PSone was how it played to the this new casual market. It was cheap to make games for and developers flooded the system with all these casual games like Barbie, Mary Kate & Ashley, Lego and kiddy cartoons galore. They were taking the market in a new direction that was bothersome for us hardcore gamers, who stuck by Nintendo and Sega. Unfortunately, Sony, with its casual market and cheap development strategy won. As we know, Sony’s short term and desperate strategy to succedd destroyed the games market.
Eventually, I did get a PS2, late in its life and have enjoyed it a lot for RPG mainly. Yet, apart from about 10 PSone games, I have still largely ignored it. That was until I walked into a Bargain shop and there it was - instant PSone collection. This is what I picked up for my $70Au ($45US - £31):
5 x PSone consoles (all working, with leads and power cords and all minis)
9 x genuine PSone controllers
8 x memory cards (2 genuine & 6 x 3rd party)
47 games:
A Bug’s Life
Actua Tennis
AFL ‘99 (Australian Rules Football)
Air Combat
Alien Trilogy
Ape Escape
Barbie’s Super Sport (oooh, casual gamers)
Big Bass Fishing
Championship ass
Chase the Express
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six - Lone Wolf
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos
CTR: Crash Team Racing
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX
Formula One 2000
Gran Turismo
GTA
GTA 2
Hogs of War (2 copies)
Destruction Derby 2
Hot Wheels Extreme Racing
KKND Krossfire
Lego Racers
Mary Kate & Ashley Mystery Mall (oooh, more casual gamers)
Medal of Honour
Planet of the Apes
Porsche Challenge
Power Rangers: Time Force
Premier Manager ‘98
Rage Racer
Shane Warne Cricket ‘99
Shrek Treasure Hunt
Soviet Strike
SpongeBob Squarepants Supersponge
Spyro 2: Gate to Glimmer
Spyro The Dragon
TOCA Touring Championship
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
Total NBA ‘97
Triple Play Baseball 2000
UEFA Euro 2000
Wipeout
Yu Gi Oh: Forbidden Memories (2 copies)
Jet Rider 2
So my plan is to sell all but one system on e-bay, along with the reallly bad kid games and excess memory cards so that my outlay is neutral at worst. Good lord, somebody offered me $15 for the Barbie and Mary Kate & Ashley games (together). I can’t lose.
