Best first person shooter of 2012?

Alright, so I notice that this might be flawed for some, 'cause there are games that may not be considered a "shooter" as much as others, and some may not consider those to be worth putting up there, not because of how bad some of them can be, but for instance, Killzone HD; it's technically an old game. I also added other at the end 'cause I gave up on putting all of the FPS games that may have been out this year down.

As for me, since I hadn't played Syndicate, it's a hard choice between Halo 4 and Far Cry 3; both have their strengths, and both have their weaknesses. Halo 4 was really great, but I didn't care all that much for what they did with the story; but it was told well enough, and it doesn't have much replay value out of the campaign, which is why I went to it. Other than that, the game is topnotch.

Far Cry 3 is kind of like life in a way, at first, you don't really like the new stuff that it introduces to you, but after a while, all of that comes together to make the game even funner. And the frame-rate on consoles isn't always average. I find myself playing it a lot though, and not even the main story stuff yet. Oh, I guess I should mention I haven't beaten it, but still, it is great enough to consider best FPS of the year.

I didn't mention what was bad or what was good in great detail from those two games, but what matters is which one is better to me. I don't know. I wish I could see what everyone else chose without actually having to choose one myself.

Far Cry 3 is a close second but Doom 3 BFG was right up my alley. I spent 34 hours in it according to Steam and I could probably fire it right back up and still have tons of fun.

@believer258: But that's why I added it as well, 'cause there's always someone that says "You forgot the [fill game name in] choice."

Borderlands 2, I suppose.

I haven't played FC3 though.

Yes, I was going through a list of all the FPS games that came out this year since I didn't know about all of them, or forgot about them. The Darkness II is one that I forgot; I actually thought that came out last year. Other is that choice, I didn't leave it off.

@NTM: It's all right, I voted "Other." It came out a couple weeks before Syndicate, I think.

FC3 man this game was a surprise after FC2 I thought the series would just stay mediocre and bad got to give credit to Ubisoft on this one for me it's the best FC game easily also think now this series destroys Crysis can't stand how linear and generic Crysis series has become since 2.

Uhh Serious Sam came out in 2011 dude, I bought it during the 2011 Steam Christmas Sale...

Well not so easy, cause Borderlands 2 was pretty great and I hear people enjoy the videogame known as Halo 4, Far Cry still wins in my book though.

IDK...Borderlands 2 so far even though it is not a pure shooter....

Far Cry 3 all the way! 25 hours in and taking outposts is still as awesome as it was in the beginning.

@Little_Socrates: Yeah, once you mentioned the game, I remembered. Sorry for not putting it on there. I hadn't played it myself. I loved the original, but seeing as it was a different developer, hearing that the campaign was short, and that the voice actor was different with a new art style, it kind of turned me off. That's not to say I wouldn't like it; even the demo I played of it was fun, but I still didn't buy it for those same reasons, even if it was all great.

Borderlands 2 is the only one on that list I played other than CoD. I really need to check out Far Cry 3, apparently it's very good, or something...

Far Cry 3 man, that game is awesome.

I voted Far Cry 3 even though I haven't played it. I would've chosen The Darkness 2 if it was on there but it wasn't and I forgot about the game.

Far Cry 3 is hands-down the best singleplayer shooter of the year. Natural Selection 2 takes the title of the best multiplayer shooter by a country mile though.

planetside 2 is the only one I've played so I guess that by default?

Unless the second half of the game goes right down the shitter, it's Far Cry 3 for me. One of the biggest trends this generation was the rise of extremely scripted single player experiences, so it's become rare to get a game that throws you into its world and say "do whatever you want."

I've only played Halo 4 but I doubt there's a better shooter out this year, except for maybe Far Cry 3.

I said the same thing,but Borderlands 2 got my vote.

Planetside 2 is the best game I've played except Day Z in years, so that. Straight up shootery shoot stuff mechanics though, probably close between Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2.

Halo 4 for me, but I haven't touched Far Cry 3 yet.

Farcry 3 and CS: GO for me.

No Mass effect 3?

I'm not entirely kidding - the action carried that game way more than the story bits in terms of making it really fun. Counterstrike: GO is pretty amazing though.

Campaign and Coop stuff: Farcry 3

Best competitive shooter: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Far Cry 3, that game was just so great and gorgeous to look at. It was the open world shooter I'd been forever looking for (never cared about Borderlands).

Sigh, I really wish there were more fresh/new IP FPSs this year :|

Far Cry 3, followed extremely closely by Halo 4 and Borderlands 2

A console version of Serious Sam 3? Really? Wow. I stand corrected then.

Gotta go with Syndicate, the co-op is insanely fun and the shooting feels great.

CS GO because it's the only one there I've actually played.

Halo 4 for me, second place is Far Cry 3

I got bored of borderlands 2 and Halo 4 in the first hour of playing them. I haven't played far cry but I am sure its better, so far cry.

Far Cry 3 and Natural Selection were the only ones on that list I had any fun with, but they both got real old real fast. I guess I would give the slight nod to Far Cry 3 because even at the end it was fun to sneak around with the bow and arrow.

Far Cry 3. The interface could have been a little quicker, but deciding how to pimp, accessorize, paint and then having the tough choice of which four weapons to assign to the slots was the most fun I had with first person shooting this year.

As a straight-up shooter? Far Cry 3. As a game I enjoyed playing this year? Borderlands 2.

Aside from that, the only other shooter I've played on your list would be Black Ops 2. And in that, I preferred the Strike Missions over the actual shooting- so... :P

I just realized that I played two of the games in the list, and I liked neither of them. Guess I just grew out of FPS games (not implying it's a maturity thing though, so don't get upset with me people)

Halo 4 without a doubt.

I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet, but I'm assuming that will be my favorite...Borderlands 2 was cool too

Syndicate needs more love.

For singleplayer, nothing beats Far Cry 3. For a balanced singleplayer and multiplayer experience I might go with Syndicate.
