I used to play a MMORPG called Runescape a little while ago but you may not like it. It's fairly simple and it was kind of addictive about a year ago but the novelty ran out for me when I got my Xbox.

I played some mad Fiesta for a little while. Great besides the insane amount of clutter from user houses and gold spammers.

Beneath a Steel Sky. It's a point and click adventure game that has been made available for free a while ago. One of the better free games out there.

Have you tried battlefield heroes?

Anarchy Online. Though like what Dave said, it can be intimidating.

Hands down Cave Story. One of the best platformers of all time, and it's completely free.

There are a lot of really interesting free mmo:s out there, but BF:Heroes is by far the best free online action game i have played.

I heard Dungeons and dragons online will go free soon, may be worth checking out.

Gunz is a pretty good game. Kind of addicting too.

Enemy Territory and (stand alone) mods like True Combat Elite. Maybe Alien Arena for a more deathmatchy style.

That's for multiplayer FPS at least. There are too many good and different free games out there. Cave Story is an awesome action platformer, Monsters' Den: Book of Dread is an ace flash-based Dungeon Crawler... There are too many to list really...

Dungeon Runners is pretty good for a free game.

Oh I forgot to add that Quake Live is a great free multiplayer FPS.

I'd say Dwarf Fortress is my favorite out of those.

Runescape is good, the community sucks though.

America's Army for PC.

The 360 game was an abomination though.

I got pretty addicted to runescape a few years ago when i had a super low end pc

Wolfeinstein Enemy Territory. Amazing multiplayer experience and surfing/trick jumping memories.

GTA 2 (And 1) Nice, little time killer. If you got like 5 or 15 minutes -- hop on, kill few people, steal a car or ride a tank. Great game.

Most recent -- Quake Live. Perfection when it comes to free games.

If I'll remember some others, Ill edit or post, because it feels like I'm missing something out.

There's about 10 trillion free to play MMO's.

If none of those appeal to you, you could always try the 75quadrillionfreetoplayflashgames.

Even free full retail games.

If you're talking about full games that will occupy you for a while, I'd say Cave Story and Beneath a Steel Sky.

But if you want little indy games, extremely well done and interesting, but that will last for a little while, I'd recommend Pathways, Don't Look Back, Today I Die and Passage.

Definitely Cave Story, also all of Niflas' games are really good to sink a few hours into. If your into adventure games, the trilby series starting with 5 days a stranger is pretty good. Also if you want a HUGE time sink, and aren't afraid of a challenge, I Wanna be the Guy would be good choice.

GunZ if you actually get good at it and learn K-style moves and stuff.

How about any game that was released on the N64 PS1 and all previous generations that you can get for free on the internet lol.

P.S. Although i would never do such a thing considering its illegal.

It's between Don't Shit Your Pants or Yaris

Hexic and Bejeweled 2. They're very addicting as well as really good for sharpening your thinking. 

If you like Worms, check out Gunbound.

Mazefinger for Iphone is way fun.

Shooters: Quake Live, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, CombatArms, America's Army, GunZ
MMORPGs: Perfect World, Runescape( If you want a browser rpg filled with 8 year olds), I dont think I really need to list a bunch, just go to mmorpg.com for these. Almost all free mmorpgs are the same grind fest type rpgs.
