I don't think I've actually played a JRPG this generation, definitely none in the same vein as FFX anyway.
So has their been any great JRPG's this gen?
Dragon Age is pretty good.
In all seriousness, Neir if you can get into it is a good choice, Blue Dragon is shit, and that is all I really know.

Yeah a friend of mine keeps trying to get me to play Nier, it just didn't look very interesting in the videos I've seen.
Dragon Age Origins I loved, put a good 100 hours into it, doesn't really fall under the typical JRPG category though. I was looking at Tales of Vesperia which looks alright.
Check out Lost Odyssey. Sakaguchi, who helped out on Final Fantasy 1-10 worked on it. It's actually a lot closer the Final Fantasy then I feel XIII was.

I would say you should try Nier.
And I know DA isn't a JRPG, I was just being a dick, because I think good western RPGs are a mile and a half ahead and far more common :3
Do not play lost Odyssey, its a piece of shit. Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia are great games though.
Eternal Sonata is pretty good. I consider Valkyria Chronicles to be close enough to a JRPG to fall into the category, and that one is definitely worth playing. I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII-2 and really like it a lot, but the down side to that one would be you should probably play XIII first. Some people think XIII is a good game, but I'm not one of them.
Lost Odyssey is amazing, the best JRPG in years hands down. I would recommend this above any other JRPG this gen.
Blue Dragon is really good gameplay wise, but the characters are very childish. It's kind of like a very tame Dragon Ball.
Resonance of Fate is really good, but I found once you actually become efficient at the combat system, it's kind of repetitive.

Oh god what. Tales of Vesperia is like £60 EVERYWHERE!
Yeah, apparently it's hard to find now. Thankfully I picked mine up at launch :P
I should also mention that you should give XIII a try. I think it is one of the best Final Fantasies (I've played and beaten 6 of them). Apparently XIII-2 is even better.
My personal top 10 starting with #1 -- Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia, Atelier Rorona, Tales of Graces F, Etneral Sonata, Lost Odyssey, Atelier Totori, Nier, Final Fantasy XIII, Record of Agarest War Zero
Lost odyssey hands down. Tales of vesperia, star ocean the last hope, and eternal sonata are all good to tho
eternal sonata felt like it was made for pre-teens. I never felt so ridiculous playing a videogame. Don't play it. Its an embarrasment.
blue dragon is another one where it assumes you are stupid and the story is written like a childrens anime.
lost odyssey is a little more grown up but still a bit strange to play. like they are hitting you over the head with the obvious stick. looks a bit crappy now as well. unreal 3 from 2008. not very pretty.

Give Lost Odyssey a try.
This best JRPG of this gen
Agreed, if you have a 360 and like JRPG's it's a must play. Very good game. Though it takes a while to really get going.
Also I liked Infinite Undiscovery though it was a bit short and the whole time the game felt like it could be so much grander.

You can get it off the 360 market place for a little over half that, still a lot tbh though.

I really liked Eternal Sonata, even if it didn't give much of a challenge.
I'm currently playing through it, and it's not bad at all. But just wondering, does it get less button-mashy as it goes on? Aside from the cutesy naive characters (which let's be honest, I knew was going to be the case), that's about the only thing that can get a bit irritating. It would be a lot better if I could just hold the attack button down and have them attack repeatedly.
Also, to the OP, give Nier a try.
I'm going to put in my vote for Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2. I just hit chapter 7 and I'm a little over 30 hours in and I love it.
Valkyria Chronicles isn't really a JRPG. It's kind of an RTS mixed in with a third person shooter mixed in with an RPG. It is, in my opinion, the best game listed in this thread but it is not a JRPG in the traditional sense. Also avoid Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope, some of the characters will make you want to put a hole through your television with your head. At the very least three of them will be guilty of this, possibly four if you count the gay Elf Vulcan child thing named Faize. And avoid The Last Remnant, that was a clusterfuck. And avoid Infinite Undiscovery, that was also a clusterfuck.
So probably Resonance of Fate, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, and Tales of Vesperia. That said I would still get a copy of Valkyria Chronicles. One of the best, but sadly least appreciated, games of this generation. And I mean that. It's actually difficult, it requires strategy, it has an extremely interesting story, and it looks absolutely fucking beautiful. Lost Odyssey is great for the first two or so discs then starts to stumble a bit in my opinion, but it's still a very well done traditional turn based JRPG that has a pretty good story. Resonance of Fate, Eternal Sonata, and Tales of Vesperia are all incredible though. Nothing bad to say about those ones.
If you absolutely must and feel obligated to then I guess you could play Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2. But they're both pretty shit, and this is coming from someone that has played almost every single Final Fantasy game out there. VI is still the best one, nevar forget.
@ElNeebre: Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Star Ocean, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Resonance of Fate, Lost Odyssey was my fav out of all of them felt more like a traditional rpg out of them all only negative I had was getting lost in hardest temple and by the time I got out I was so over leveled I beat the rest of the game with little effort which is more of my experience negative and may not be your.

Resonance of Fate
Agreed, was really surprising its as good as it is. I reviewed it for another site but I would definitely had paid for the game if I had realised it was out at the time! if you want to read said review pm me and will send you a link to it...

That's funny, I found it on newegg a month ago for 10 dollars. Course that is the 360 version, the PS3 version has extra content and is the "superior" build but you won't find it anywhere.
Either way the best JRPG this generation is.... Xenoblade Chronicles. Lost Odyssey is a close second though.
I have had such a hard time finding a good JRPG this generation. I come from the SNES era and coming up through the years with Chrono Trigger and the earlier Final Fantasy games spoiled me. I have to have exploration and discovery in a JRPG or I struggle to enjoy it. I didn't like Lost Odyssey and just recently finished Xenoblade Chronicles , which I enjoyed except for the battle system. So for you my friend, if you can wait everything that I have seen from Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch looks good. However, if you want a good one now, I would say give Tales of Vesperia or the Atelier franchise a shot.
Don't play lost odyssey, eternal sonata or blue dragon, they're mad boring.
tales of vesperia, ff 13-2 and star ocean tlh are pretty good.
if you can track down copies of persona 3 and 4 (PS2 or retrocompatible PS3) I highly recommand you play them. Best JRPGs to date.
Also, resonance of fate is great but really weird
I'm playing through Lost Odyssey now and am on the third disc. I'm still really enjoying it. Blue Dragon was pretty good, but it is a bit more lighthearted but has the best boss music (I'm sure others hate it though). I didn't really care for Tales of Vesperia but I did get through it.Infinite Undiscovery is ok, but whoever designed some of that game needs to get slapped in the face. Resonance of Fate is pretty good, I would call it very eccentric.
Tales of Vesperia is probably the best JRPG on either console IMO though I haven't played Valkyria Chronicles. I would say Lost Odyssey comes in a close second with Tales of Graces and Eternal Sonata are probably tied for third. Another game that doesn't get much attention but I really enjoyed was Infinite Undiscovey, mostly because of the fantastic combat.
