I'm asking this now because I sort of doubt that the handful of remaining PS3 and 360 games are really in the running (and there aren't Wii games coming out anymore). Let's throw DS and PSP games into this generation as well.

What games do you think had the best soundtrack? If you're going to post an answer (and embedded video), if the song is from a pivotal story moment, try to keep it spoiler-free, or remember to use spoiler tags in case everyone hasn't played that game.

I can't even begin to pick a favourite, but to get the ball rolling, Bastion sure is up there:

Fez for sure. I think it's one of the best albums in the last few years flat out, game soundtrack aside.

Surely that's all last generation now, right?

Anyway, if we're going with DS games:

Hmmm... god. This is a really hard one. Its been such a long generation this time that I feel like I'm forgetting stuff. I'll say this much its probably going to be something from Akira Yamaoka.

Max Payne 3 had a great soundtrack. Halo 3 had a great soundtrack. Bastion had a great soundtrack. To the Moon had a great soundtrack. Hotline miami had a great soundtrack. Super meat boy had a great soundtrack. Journey had a great soundtrack. MGS4 had a great soundtrack. Bionic commando had a soundtrack that was too good for the game it was in. Just a few off the top of my head

FTL. The music is so calm/haunting. I listen to that music all the time and I'm not the type to ever listen to music.

"So what did you do today?"

"What's for dinner?"

Infamous 2 had a surprisingly awesome soundtrack. Bioshock was nice and twisted. And The Unfinished Swan was just beautiful.

If I had to name a game where I liked the soundtrack it was El Shaddi.

Loved this game I've platinum it, and got all the costumes and secret infinite outfit. I've defeated the angels and kicked there asses with pure skill. I got pissed off afew times playing on that mode where if you get hit your dead, but even then I had a fucking blast whippin ass to this soundtrack. Still I have hope to see a sequel to this game, but I wonder what happen to that last angel that got away.

Fine, fine; it's probably FTL or Hotline Miami but Dark Souls has the best individual track.

I'll qualify this right now by saying it's probably not quite enough to deserve "best of the generation," but the Hotline Miami soundtrack is pretty great.

While i'm not sure i'd say its the best, Hotline Miami's soundtrack is hypnotic and actually has a large impact on the game's look at the nature of violence.

For me, I think it has to be Fez

And I posted this recently in the best FPS soundtrack, but I also really enjoyed the music from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

And, although it came out on PS2, it was an 09 release and therefore technically belongs to this generation: Persona 4. I adore a lot of the tracks from that game, so I'll just post one of my favourites.

The ambient soundtrack is fine, just don't bring up that awful strangling-a-cat "band"'s song. Fuck that was bad.

IT'S HOTLINE MIAMI AND YOU FUCKING KNOW IT.

It's probably the most 'immersive' by which I mean I wanna kill people when I listen to it. "Hydrogen" is my favorite.

I don't know if one song counts as a soundtrack, but after going through all of that in the Walking Dead, "Take Us Back" hit me hard.

Journey, Fez, Hotline Miami, Bastion, Skyrim. Would Persona 4 count? It's last gen hardware but given that it came out in 2008, I think it should count.

Any previous generation choice would be easy, Final Fantasy <pick one>.
But since FFXIII is a massive failure on that department too, picking one gets tougher.

Actually no, Lost Odyssey.

Heh, well, I loved the punk music. I obviously see how that may not appeal to everyone, but I certainly appealed to me.

Remember Me's soundtrack immediately stuck out the first time I booted it up. I was not expecting an orchestral soundtrack at all. Unlike many games that have one or two good tracks, this game's entire soundtrack is awesome and is used very effectively throughout.

I'm torn between Red Dead Redemption and Hotline Miami. On the one hand, Red Dead Redemption was 99% original music made specifically for the game whereas Hotline Miami was licensed music from artists for use in the game. But at the same time, I bought Hotline Miami SPECIFICALLY to play a game with that soundtrack running in the background even though I turned out to be fairly horrible at it (I haven't played a game with a keyboard and mouse that wasn't Civilization since...I don't know, MOH: Allied Assault?).

So...gosh. I just don't know. This generation wasn't a particularly outstanding one for me, two of my favorites came out this year (Bioshock Infinite and the Last of Us) but I almost look at those more as film scores than game soundtracks. That's another part of Hotline Miami's allure, even as licensed music the nature of the music they picked gives off a bold-faced video game feel a lot of the other great soundtracks this generation don't have.

I suppose one last nomination I'd have is Mass Effect 2, though the Mass Effect 3 theme I felt was the greatest musical accomplishment of that series and I can't recall any ME2 music off the top of my head.

I guess I'll go with Red Dead Redemption on the licensed music technicality.

There's been some stellar soundtracks this generation. Hotline Miami, Red Dead Redemption, The Last of Us, Dark Souls, The Binding of Isaac, L.A. Noire, Mass Effect 3, the whole Assassin's Creed series. The list goes on and on and on.

The best, though, probably has to go to Dishonored. I'm a huge fan of Daniel Licht's work on the television series Dexter. And that tone of music goes perfectly with Dishonored's world. It has this very magical, almost mischievous sound, with a dramatic and somber tune intermixed. And of course, that marvelous ending theme.
