With the end of the year fast approaching I've found this year to have a lot of great soundtracks. What song would you nominate for the Best Video Game Song of 2012. It can be anything from a song appropriated for use in game or something original.

Mine has to be Tears from Max Payne 3. The song and the scene accompanying it happened to be my favorite part of the entire game.

Well, I immediate thought of these two but it could be because I have a bad memory and have just played these games recently.

#4 Posted by gaminghooligan (822 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Hizang: The minute that song came on in the game my entire living room full of friends applauded lol

@JasonR86: Man hotline miami makes it hard to pick just one. Easily one of my favorite soundtracks this year

#5 Posted by redbliss (634 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Really anything from the Fez soundtrack. However, this one is my favorite just because the level was so cool.

#6 Posted by RPGee (689 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I came here just to make sure Hydrogen was there. Glad to see knows what's up.

But of course there's this:

#7 Posted by Indiana_Jenkins (320 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

I want this to be on the front page, because everyone is going to forget it by the time end of the year lists begin materializing.

Although Hotline Miami's soundtrack is fucking amazing.

#8 Posted by gaminghooligan (822 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@redbliss: fez was amazing.

@RPGee: holy crap! I turned the volume down on FTL for podcast listening. I see now I made a grievous error, which has been remedy. I shall atone with an FTL session while I wait for the CoD:Blops 2 QL

@Indiana_Jenkins: YES.

ALL HOTLINE MIAMI ALL THE TIME

I mean there are other good ones (Devil Survivor 2 has some good tracks, The Arena from Persona 4 Arena is good) but yeah, hotline miami motherfuckers

edit; someone should post paris too

I really loved the piece that plays when you meet Konrad in Spec Ops The Line. It's hard to describe, but I like the irony of it: it starts simple and then grows as the truth sinks in and when you're feeling terrible, it is at it's most triumphant and epic. Really powerful moment that would not be achieved without the score. Starts at 4:08: (spoilers, of course)

This song has never failed to give me chills. It is absolutely phenomenal. By far my favorite song on the entire soundtrack.

P.S. the songs that you guys have suggested are all also great.

#13 Posted by innacces14 (726 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Didn't play the game, but heard the tune during the Quick Look. Fuckin' catchy. haha

#14 Posted by adam1808 (1030 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Tis a good year for the videogame music

#15 Posted by Nightriff (2879 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Loved the Fez soundtrack but I'm not recalling a lot of songs from games currently...should probably listen to some soundtracks I have

#16 Posted by gaminghooligan (822 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@innacces14: oh man. that is really catchy lol. makes me want to drive a hot pink corvette down the streets of vice city lol

@tsiro: everything about journey makes me wish my ps3 hadn't YLoD on me last year. man that song makes me want to play that game so bad

@Jaqen_HGhar: man the walking dead's music just fills me with sorrow, and I adore it for that. Also I thought The Heavy was perfect for the BL2 opener. Also "valar morghulis" my friend.

@Maajin: I want to listen so badly, but after all the good things I've heard about Spec Ops I think I'm going to grab it on Black Friday for a nice price.

All of the music in Sound Shapes is amazing (well, I wasn't really fond of the Deadmau5 stuff), particularly the new Beck tracks <3

#19 Posted by gaminghooligan (822 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@Cathryn: must. obtain. these Beck tracks...

@adam1808: indeed it is

@Animasta: would be an honor

#20 Posted by BeachThunder (8848 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Quantum Conundrum had some good stuff:

Also, end credits song:

What a great year for video game music. Can't wait for Health's new album.

#22 Posted by big_jon (5069 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

Love this song so very much. XCOM and Halo 4 took the cake for me this year, Fez had some great tunes too.

#23 Edited by gaminghooligan (822 posts) - 6 months, 7 days ago

@BeachThunder: the bass in that first track is awesome.

@CosmicBatman: agreed to both statements

@big_jon: good stuff, just started my first run of the campaign on heroic, I tend to always enjoy the Halo soundtracks, in fact I have the music from Reach on my I-Pod

#24 Posted by BeachThunder (8848 posts) - 5 months, 19 days ago

Splice

Has a beautiful soundtrack.

#25 Posted by fisk0 (2113 posts) - 5 months, 19 days ago

Say what you will about Krater as a game, (I rather liked it's gameplay and the early concept images, but the end product had too many dumb jokes and pop culture references that really ruined any semblance of immersion), but it's soundtrack was fucking amazing. Especially some of the battle music, such as the Cave Battle song:

This was the first song to pop into my head too. Spec Ops had such a fucking killer soundtrack; it really added to the style of the game, and was actually the thing that convinced me to buy it after playing the demo.

"Tears" from Max Payne 3, no question.

#28 Posted by LongMasterWolf (152 posts) - 5 months, 19 days ago

Fez is probably my most listened to soundtrack, it pairs so well with the game.

But I have to give it to Neil Davidge here, when I first heard he was taking the reigns for Halo 4 I was stoked and he delivered. When "Arrival" is playing during the final mission, just complete amazement.

This was my favorite tune from the second best soundtrack this year. Fez wins best soundtrack. Hotline and Fez have some of the best VG music of all time.

Probably something off of the ME3 soundtrack. That one was pretty great.

Heck, the soundtrack even had a better ending than the game.

@gaminghooligan: That credits song is fantastic! I was going to choose that but you already did

@Maajin: I just beat Spec Ops last night and you're right. That song made meeting Konrad great. It was scary as hell finding out the truth and just hearing it again gives me goosebumps. That game is amazing, especially the soundtrack.

Another song I thought was great was Dishonored's credits song.

As someone just posted, The Walking Dead's credit song was great too. The soundtrack to Mass Effect 3 was fantastic also. 2012=Greatest Video Game Soundtracks?

I'm going to put some of these songs on my Vita now.

Everything in Hotline Miami and the OP's song.

#34 Edited by UitDeToekomst (532 posts) - 5 months, 19 days ago

@JasonR86: Outstanding choices. I can't think of better ones at the moment, although a lot of other Hotline Miami songs would be up there, too, as would that music in Thomas Was Alone

#35 Posted by Mendelson9 (305 posts) - 5 months, 19 days ago

@innacces14: I never got past that song on the album because I would just listen to it over and over.

God yes.

Also this one:

The most emotional moment in any game ever for me.

Also I really enjoyed FFXIII-2's soundtrack.

#40 Posted by innacces14 (726 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

@Mendelson9: This is my personal favorite from the soundtrack. It has a very deliberate Michael Jackson vibe. Jake Kaufman added a synth lead over where the vocals would have gone, but you can even tell by the syncopation of the synth lead that this tune was meant to be sung MJ style.

#41 Posted by Morriana (10 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

Loved this song when I first heard it on the illuminating concert stage level. Despite it coming out in 2010, it came out on Steam in 2012. Close enough.

#42 Posted by BeachThunder (8848 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Just realised that no one's mentioned XCOM yet.

Oh, also:

Dustforce

I just realised I posted this in another similar thread, but oh well...

#47 Posted by BamSaidTheLady (75 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

@ShaggE: I dug this tune from the Adventure Time game too.

#48 Posted by ShaggE (4427 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

@BamSaidTheLady: Forgot about that one! Love it!

#49 Posted by dgtlty (92 posts) - 5 months, 18 days ago

I liked Neil Davidge's work on Halo 4 as a standalone score but in game it's not memorable.

Mass Effect 3 was particularly emotive, especially the "Leaving Earth" theme already mentioned.

HEALTH did an incredible job with Max Payne 3:

After 150+ hours of Skyrim the one thing I never got tired of was the soundtrack. Reminded me of earlier Zelda games at times.

Darksiders 2 isn't among the best games this year but I thought the music was strong.

Beat me to it. I didn't even play the game but I listen to this song on the XMB sometimes since I got the game free on PS Plus. Catchy tune.

Also Journey is my choice for soundtrack of the year, although Hotline Miami also had great music.
