Man I remember when that happened. At the time I was checking GS everyday to see if the review was up. I didn't really care all that much cause as most people here have said, 8.8 is awesome.

I still like regular Bel Airs. It never gets old to me.
I never really liked any Zelda game so the score didn't affect me at all but I can remember my friend ranting about this review on the bus to school. I bugged him about it for a couple weeks. Then, once he finished the game, he kind of agreed with the review. He still thought the score was too low but he wasn't foaming at the mouth about it.
Probably deserved a lower score. That game wasn't all that great.
Also, I'm one of the few people (as Brad seems to think) that got it for GC, as I didn't own a Wii at the time. In fact, I still don't have a Wii. Man, I wish SS was coming out on GC. I'd play the shit out of that.

Given that GameFAQs (and Gamespot given the merger) has a huge Nintendo (And Zelda Specifically) bias in the userbase it's no wonder they got upset. Although it's still completely stupid that's the main reason why that community blew it out of proportion more than most others.
I wonder what sort of a sad life you'd have to live to be upset by something that trivial. Do these people not have more important things in their lives to worry about than a review score of a video game?
I was never involved in the forums over at Gamespot so this whole "controversy" passed by me unnoticed at the time. I assume I just noted that the game got a lower score than Wind Waker and from reading the review this was due to aged and/or poorly functioning mechanics, whether in-game or on the hardware side. Some of my favorite games from that time, games that I enjoyed more than several scoring 9 and above, were 8.2's so when I eventually found out that people had made a fuzz about it I was flabbergasted into the ozone.
I get now why it happends, but it's still kinda disheartening.
That whole thing developed a deep seated prejudice in me towards a certain breed of gamer. Japanophiles is what I called them. But human nature of this sort is not exclusive to them as it turns out, though still think they are more prone....it's whatever passes for testosterone when they exult over beating an incredibly difficult and weird ass japanese game, sometimes involving odd relations with a highly developed 12 year old girl, and they waggle a certain virtual body-part online. Soo bizarre..something needle comes to mind...

Always seemed weird, especially since Twilight Princess seems to generally be looked on as one of the weaker entries in the series by fans.
But this was before people had played it and were busy hyping themselves up to play "the best Zelda game ever!". So when it came out and "only" got an 8.8, people were outraged.
Which is rather amusing, because yeah, within a few weeks, people seemed to quickly accept it wasn't as great as the past few games. If anything, an 8.8 was pretty generous.
8.8 was about right for TP, it was a very well made game, it lacked that little extra.
I vaguely do remember that System Wars forum back when I visited gamespot, it always struck me as odd reading that forum, it was like reading a football forum and supporters from 2 different teams arguing which is better, it made no sense to me back then and it makes no sense to me now.

@ZeForgotten: You're honestly going to compare that 8.8 fiasco to these forums? Really? No community is perfect, that's for sure. But I've never seen anything on Giant Bomb even resembling that Twilight Princess garbage. And I've been here for quite a while now.
It really annoys me when some people on these forums go on and on about how terrible the community is. Have you ever been on any other video game forums? Go look at IGN or GameSpot or Kotaku. You'll quickly realize how civil this place is. And even so, if this place is such a fanboy infested piece of shit, then why are you here? You have over 6,000 posts so obviously, there's something here that you seem to enjoy.
