So, inspired by LOLtima, EightBitWarrior, and others, I decided to hop on the top 30 bandwagon. Now, you're probably going to hate my picks, so be forewarned.

30. Lumines

Lumines is my all time favorite puzzle game. I bought a PSP at launch, and with it bough three titles: Metal Gear Acid, Wipeout, and Lumines. Lumines was just something I bought with some excess cash, and I wasn't expecting it to get a ton of play time. I never played any PSP game more than I have Lumines, and I've played even more Lumines Live! on the Xbox 360. It's simple to play, yet you can play for hours on end. This is the only puzzle game to ever be as addictive as Tetris, and even moreso for me. Setting up huge combos and clearing the screen, all to some killer tunes. Man, I loved Lumines.

29. Final Fantasy V

Many people say that Final Fantasy V is the series' weakest link, because the story isn't their favorite. Yeah, admittedly, the story isn't amazing, but it's full of awesome characters, making it an enjoyable tale. Exdeath, though he doesn't laugh as much as Kefka, has a much better sense of humor. Gilgamesh is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. I loved all of the characters in the game. But that's not really why I loved the game, it has more to do with the job system, which remains the pinnacle of all job systems. The depth of character customization and the variety it created in battles is amazing. FFV is one of the most underappreciated games in the series.

28. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

One of the few games I ever played through more than once, I just adore FFTA. It was the first game of its breed I ever played, and I've been hooked ever since. A great number of jobs, tons of cool quest, and great characters. Funny, I almost didn't buy the game. I played a demo and hated it. I went to the store, they didn't have the new Medal of Honor GBA game, so I just bought FFTA. I didn't sleep for a week because of the game. Addictive as heck, I tell you.
[note: I have not played the original FFT extensively]

27. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES

After thinking about it for hours, I finally concluded that Persona 3 is better than Persona 4. 3 has a much better battle system despite not controlling the whole party, and overall it had more depth in battles. I loved exploring Tartarus, I loved being a part of S.E.E.S., and I loved all the characters. Though it's a close call, P3 is just better than P4 for me in almost  every way. So, what makes the games so great? The battles are tons of fun, the characters are awesome, and the social link mechanic is very original for the genre. <3 Persona

26. Sonic CD

The epitome of all Sonic games. Sonic CD took the Sonic formula, made it faster, and gave the levels something more. In the past, sonic was about going as fast as possible. That's still this case in CD, but now there is a reason to explore, a reason to tackle the platforming challenges, and a reason to seek out and kill enemies. The time travelling was a blast, it just improved the experience in so many ways. It really made it an experience. Couple that with the fact that every level in CD is masterfully designed, the best boss battles in the series (the Metal Sonic one is just awesome), and you've got a fantastic game.

So, I'll make part 2 of my list soon, probably tomorrow. I promise you, this is the most RPG heavy part, so don't label me as some JRPG fanboy.
Feel free to hate on my pics and tell me I'm wrong!

I'm loving reading all these lists.

My friend will swear by Final Fantasy V until the day he dies. I borrowed it once and it seemed really good to me. However, the game doesn't operate correctly on the PS3. After that one cross-dressing pirate joins you party, whenever you try to save in the over-world, the title hangs. I gave up at that point and gave it back to him.

I don't understand why they went and combined all the physical attack types into one in Persona 4. That is one area where Persona 3 is the superior product. But Persona 4 has direct character control, which is nice. How am I supposed to choose?!

#5 Posted by TheFreeMan (2712 posts) -

Glad to see Sonic CD on your list! It's probably my favourite in the series.

#6 Posted by Dj (913 posts) -

I totally forgot how awesome Tactics Advance was. I used to play that all the time. I gotta go find that thing.

Why is everyone doing their own top 30 list? Also why thirty , why not a golden number or something divisible by 50.

DISAGREE!

Actually I'll wait until the end of your list before I give you the full force of my disagreement.

God i wish sonic was still decent

Oh, sweet another list. I hope this provides to be good reading, I have hopes in you BoG. Sonic CD was a great game, and so was Persona 3, even if I still like P4 more. I understand your point, however, in your placement and such.
Final Fantasy V is also an underappreciated game, too, even if I have never finished it. FFVI is still my favorite though.

I dunno how you guys even think about doing a top games of all time list. I know if i did one I'd miss a tonne of great games out, and I'd never be able to settle on an order.

That's exactly why I hat making these kind of lists. I'm a really indecisive person so making such big choices just give me a headache.

Good stuff so far.

Dave loves it and you should too.

Played zero on your list so far... looking forward to the next one.

#18 Posted by AndrewGaspar (2418 posts) -

I tried Final Fantasy Tactics Advance using malicious means and it was fun... but I've stopped doing that. I'm planning to get a PSP someday and I'll definitely buy the remake of the original FFT.

What is the deal with all these lists?  Is there some inside joke or contest or something that I'm unaware of?

Also, I stopped reading at Final Fantasy V.  Terrible game.  = P
#20 Posted by Discorsi (1390 posts) -

Sadly only played one of those (tactics advanced).  I loved that game.  It got me in to the whole turn-based strategy genre.

#21 Posted by LuckyWanderDude (929 posts) -

Lumines is most definitely a wonderful game!

#22 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11423 posts) -

I have no qualms with your list. Carry on.

#23 Posted by Mushir (2389 posts) -

Glad to see Lumines up there. It rivals Tetris in addiction.

#24 Posted by thebipsnbeeps (545 posts) -

Finally got to a list that I can follow every day *achievement unlocked*. So, thanks for that...

Neat list so far. I'll support ye with Final Fantasy V. The quirkiness is uncanny! I'm saying that, though, because any Final Fantasy game on a list gets predictable, but this title threw me off, as I totally forgot about it. I need to get back in to it one of these days. Can't wait to see how this list rolls :D

P.S. Last time they remade Sonic CD was on Gems Collection for the Gamecube, yes? If so, then I need to get my hands on it some how. If not, then let me know otherwise! Heads up on thanks!

I guess Top 30 games are the new thing now.  Sonic CD is a kick ass game.  I just found my Disc for the PC version of the game.  Need to install it soon.

"Lumines is my all time favorite puzzle game."
Well, I guess this means Tetris isn't going to make it on the list. What a bummer!

Anyway, after reading MC_Izawa's top 10 list, this list looks pretty excellent already. I won't lie, I haven't even played any of these games. I played a Lumines demo for a few minutes and just could not understand how it worked. Perhaps I am retarded. Either way, good effort. Hopefully the rest of the list will have some games I'm more familiar with. I'm not much of an RPG guy and never owned a Sega console. I really should give Lumines another shot and try to figure out how it works. I remember being really intrigued by it when it first came out on PSP.

Yes, you should. I started Lumines up yesterday and played for two hours straight. It consumes you and never lets you go.
And bipsnbeeps, I think gems collection was the last time it was made available. We need to start crossing out fingers for Sega CD on the virtual console. I need some Sonic CD and Marky Mark's Make my video!

Is THAT what they say about me?  Eh.  I've been pretty happy and upbeat lately.  I just really couldn't stand Final Fantasy V.  That game was total balls.  Then again, then you've got Final Fantasy VI to compete against, it's kind of hard for ANY other FF games to hold up.

ESPERS FTW!!!

Espers were also in XII. Also, I know you've got more disagreement with me in the future, so stay tuned!

Nice list man. I wonder if I should take a crack at this... hmm...

#33 Posted by Maxszy (2064 posts) -

Can't disagree here. Not sure I would include them all in my top 30 but they are all great games and great picks. So I can't really complain. Especially Persona.

Also I don't know where the top "30" started but I think its a good number. Big enough to offer some depth that will make it very unique yet not so long its impossible to read. Enjoy this, thanks!

I hated V for a while.
I learned that to appreciate V, you have to play the rest of the series and get proper perspective of Final Fantasy's overall history. More specifically the job system, and that Final Fantasy slowly became the more "serious" dark toned series over time.

What really did it for me was that I decided to buy V on GBA on a whim. I had attempted to complete the game a couple times prior but to no avail due to my relative disinterest in the characters. After some dedicated play the story finally does pick up, and the job system becomes more or less the center piece of the overal experience.

Overall V is an important entry in the series. If you want real crap...try the original Final Fantasy II...

Some noticeable things about V (Spoilers, for a game made in 1994...):

* The first game to have Gilgamesh. First time "Battle on the Big Bridge" is used. Gilgamesh is hilarious even now. His name should be added to the definition of "Epic Fail."
* Aerith may freak out fans with her death years later. But Gaulf's final stand is pretty impressive.
* The main character is named Bartz. In Japanese his original name is Butz, thus winning the award for worst JRPG name ever.
*Two planets that converge into one. FFIX anyone?
*ExDeath turns out to be...a....tree... The final boss... Is a tree... EPIC!!!!
#35 Posted by BoG (5180 posts) -

Agreed, Vidiot. The first few hours chasing crystals with no jobs are pretty slow, but it only goes up after that. When you travel through each world and meet Gilgamesh... It's just awesome.

#36 Posted by Red (5994 posts) -

Although I don't think that P3 is better than P4, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is an awesome, awesome game.

All I know is I am playing Persona 3 FES right now (about 22 hours in - just rescued Yamagishi) and I am lovin' it.  Depending on how things turn out, I may argue with you about it being placed too low on your list.  Ha-ha, not really.  I'm just glad to see it represented and extatic I finally tried the series.

Team Fortress 2 better be in your top one BoG.
