Okay. "Dead" might be a little strong, but there's no denying video game reviews ain't exactly as prominent as they used to be. Times have changed. Maybe things were simpler when a game was good or not based on a purple, sleepy guy or a red psycho. I don't know. I'm not really here to preach about the importance of review scores. I'm just a stats guy. I like charts and graphs with pretty colors. Is that so bad? Well, here at Giant Bomb, we've hit somewhat of a milestone with the 666th review on the site. From Poker Smash to Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, that's over seven years of games reviewed not just by the staff, but by users as well. That's right. This data dump isn't just about the staff reviews. There's over 11,500 user reviews for the 666 games that have been reviewed on by the staff, and I didn't forget those!

Just so we're all on the same page, I rounded off the user review scores for statistical purposes. For example, Alex gave Kirby's Epic Yarn a 5. Eighteen users reviewed with an average of 4.28, which means it gets a 4 and therefore the community disagrees with Alex. You're all terrible monsters. Did you even look at that game? Anyway, you'll see why this is important later. Let's get this show on the road.

Alex

Alex's first GB review was Backbreaker on June 11, 2010. Some may say Alex has a reputation for reviewing terrible games. The fact that nearly 20% of the games he's reviewed have zero user reviews may back up this claim. Some say he even enjoys reviewing these terrible games. Who can say? He has issued the most 1-star reviews on the site, but he's also doled out twelve 5-star reviews in his time here, although it has been a while (South Park: The Stick of Truth).

Austin

Austin's the newest reviewer on the site of course, so there's not much to talk about here. But, hey. Users agree with him 100% of the time, so there's that.

Brad

Brad's first GB review was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which he gave a solid 5 on June 20, 2008. Of the regular reviewers on the site, he has the highest percentage of 5-stars at 22.1%. Brad is also tied with Jeff for the most Nintendo DS and PS3N reviews on the site; a stat that will likely live forever.

Dan

Since joining Giant Bomb, Dan has become somewhat of the site's Nintendo reviewer. He's already reviewed more Wii U games than anyone. That's probably appropriate for a man whose role model is Waluigi. It's also somewhat suspect that Dan's pie chart is a peace sign. Weird, huh?

Back in the day, Hardcore Dave reviewed some games occasionally. In his nine reviews, he took on some pretty big blockbusters such as Battlefield 3 and Dragon Age: Origins. It's a small sampling, but the community agrees with Dave 66.7% of the time, which is the third highest of anyone.

Drew hasn't reviewed a game since May 2011. If they ever make another DiRT game, maybe we'll hear from him again. Because users reviewed DiRT 2 a 4.38 and DiRT 3 a 4.22, that means users agree with Drew 0% of the time.

At 257 reviews, Jeff is far and away the leader in reviews on the site, but you probably already knew that. Did you know he's reviewed more DSiWare, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox Live Arcade, and Xbox One games than anyone? Yeah...you probably could've guessed that.

During his reign as Kingtern, Kessler actually reviewed a few games. He even reviewed one game twice (Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine). You may notice that the community disagreed with Kessler 71.4% of the time, but every time it was because they liked the game more than him.

Patrick reviewed twenty-four games (5th most) during his tenure here at Giant Bomb. He championed Dishonored when no one else gave it much attention. Patrick also brought attention to games like Tokyo Jungle and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair when no one else likely would have.

Great work. I love a numerical break down...guess that's why I ended up as an accountant. Honestly I haven't missed reviews as much as I thought I would, even though I almost always read them. I much prefer the personality driven site that's become such a unique place.

I would love to see a breakdown across each score by reviewer. 17% of Alex's reviews were scored a 1, but how many of the games receiving 1 were from Alex (it's 44% btw)

I'm a crazy person. The bulk of the work was done a few years ago when I did this for 500 reviews. Since then, I just update it each time there's a new review. It's quick and easy. I've just been waiting for some kind of milestone to do another post.

Huge props for putting this all together, this sort of thing is AWESOME!

I can't help but notice the skew in percentages between users and staff on 4-star reviews. While they make up just about 42% of staff reviews, the magic 4/5 comprises a whopping 53.6% of user reviews! Additionally, almost all of this difference comes from the lower star ratings, as staff and users have almost the same percentage of 5 star reviews (14.1% and 14.7% respectively). As positive as the staff seems to be, getting to choose what they review and what they don't the users are significantly more positive on the same set of game.

Again, this is super interesting, thank you so much!

Also, as a side note, a lot of user reviews have been eaten by the site over time, which could heavily affect a few games' user stats. Biggest examples are (for some reason) BioWare games like Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. There are a lot fewer reviews for those games now than there were 4-5 years ago, and almost all of the surviving ones are DLC reviews, which must have not gotten gobbled somehow. All the main game reviews are newer, which must have been written after the purge.

Sometimes I wonder if there's needs to give bad and middling games their spotlight and attention just as a counterbalance to the choose what you like tendency. Which seems like it could skewed the perceive quality of games and expectations in the long run.

So I know this might sound like a contradiction or something, but I feel weird that there aren't more reviews on the site as of late.

Yeah, video game reviews aren't that important. Yeah, most of the site traffic probably comes from Quick Looks, people telling other people about Giant Bomb or specific video series like Metal Gear Scanlon, etc. Yeah, they talk a lot about a game through the Quick Looks, UPF/Playdates, the Bombcast/Beast Cast, random video series. Yeah, the Game of the Year podcasts go in depth about every decision from dumb to the important ones like GOTY.

All of that said, it just feels...weird. It is a website (mostly) about video games, but they only have 13 reviews for over 8 months of video gaming coverage? And after all of the talk and discussion about how much people have played certain games, nobody ended up writing a review for games like Dying Light, Bloodborne, Rocket League.

I feel like there should be more reviews at least for a historical aspect, in a way. Or for people who don't listen or watch everything. Like to have a go to thing which summarizes what people generally thought of say Bloodborne, instead of saying "They talked about it to death...in these 5 podcasts, these four videos, and there's a video series where Brad played it to get the platinum from 5 months ago." (And yeah I know the counterpoint to this is don't do all of that, just tell them to watch the Quick Look)

I know it's a weird and dumb thing to point out, but I still think there should be a few more site reviews than they are currently doing.

Very cool stuff Marino. I would have to say I do think reviews are dead. The Quick Look format along with let's plays and other forms of 'review' are much more direct and help me to identify the pros and cons based on who is playing, who is watching, and what they have to say.
