Man, they made any old kids moderators back in those days.

>_>

In retrospect, that's kind of the impression that I have about my own moderation tenure. I've never been able to get direct confirmation from any of the staff about it, but I was always under the impression that because I was evil and competent enough with the wiki editing tools to fill out pages like Barney's Hide and Seek game that nobody else would touch that they let me come aboard soon after launch just so they could stop directly subjecting themselves to moderating that sort of stuff. Man, those were the days.

It really doesn't seem like four years. On the day Giant Bomb launched, the moderation tools were non-existant and we couldn't even ban porn spammers. Those were exciting times. (because of stuff going on with the site, not the porn.)

Here here. That wiki queue was monstrous enough to sift through, but I remember the forum team's work being in another realm of insanity entirely. I don't even remember the moderation tools being completely lacking, though; I always figured you guys surely had at least a little to work with at launch. Again, those were the days. And for anybody else reading this, I suspect the only reason Marino's numbers for approvals and rejections isn't higher is that that was how much material we had to hand-check. I know for a while it was a miracle if we could get under 30,000 items in the queue at any point in time; that's how eager people were to fill out the wiki and, probably in a lot of cases, get the 1000 points necessary to bypass the moderation process altogether.

@Pepsiman: On the first day, we had nothing. Hell, for the first hours, I was the only moderator on the site.

Dark times those were.

I'm going to reiterate this as well. I feel terrible for not knowing about the PTSD you must have incurred from all of that as a once-fellow mod.

@Hailinel: @Pepsiman: Being able to see the full site for a few days before everyone else gave me enough fuel to power through.

Happy Birthday Giant Bomb!

Endogene. Oh man, that's a name I haven't heard in a while.

Never forget.

Loved the blog. Those first days of Giant Bomb were insane. I waited to join the site because of just how crazy shit was. I wanted to see when it would level out. Eventually, I joined in. We've lost some good ones, some trolls, and some that we just might never understand on the user end.

It's been a long road getting from there to here.

Coolio, thanks man.

Some of those early wiki moderations in the first month were fucking brutal too. Nerves were frayed, queues flooded. Butthurtness galore.

"Here's a totally new (for video games) kind of point-based wiki system, with no real guidelines for what pages should be linked or why, so if you add the wrong things we're just gonna call you a points troll." ~ Not an actual quote except for the last three words.

I have a feeling that particular moderator didn't stay long, but the sentiment was bush league enough that I stopped visiting the site every day until things cooled off. Anyway, praise be to wiki and the veteran mods that've stuck through it. I still remember seeing the old blog post where people were nominating . :)

Not until around the end of the year, last I heard. It sounds like they're taking their time getting things built, as opposed to Tested's "Yo dawg, we're gonna toss up a new site right now and see what breaks! lol!"

God damn. I can't wait to see the baby that Dave and Alexis made. The preview stuff on the last livestream was awesome looking.

Any timestamp for that would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, can't believe there was so much activity right at the beginning. I've actually been listening to the old podcasts, and it sounds like Arrow Pointing Down was huge from the first episode on. Lotta Gerstmann and Davis fans following them around! I personally never would have found this site if I hadn't been lead to the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood QL with Vinny and Ryan. I had no idea who they were back then. Weird to think about this stuff.

Still can't read 'NuclearWinter' without having that tune from Freedom Force in my head.
