Can't find anything on which GPU it's using, which makes me assume it's an Intel GMA chip. Machines with integrated ATi Radeon chipsets tend to handle most UE3, id tech 1-4 and Source games at low or medium settings (like Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 1-2, Killing Floor, Singularity, Mirror's Edge, F.E.A.R. 1-3, Portal 1-2, Bioshock 1-2, as well as all the Call of Duty games), what I've heard about Intel GMA is that it not only is having problems with poor performance in games - which is to be expected from an integrated GPU and something I think you can learn to live with - but that it's actually is missing chunks of OpenGL and DirectX instructions, making some games totally unable to run (many indie games use OpenGL after all, as it's supported on many platforms) rather than just being slow. I wouldn't expect any of the Frostbite Battlefield games to run (Bad Company 2 or Battlefield 3) even at the lowest settings - though BF3 seemed slightly better optimized for lesser hardware than BC2 was.
Evochron Mercenary should work even on an Intel chip I think, it think it's pretty much optimized to run on any machine built in the past decade. But as others have said, it's probably a fantastic opportunity to start getting stuff from GOG.com, you shouldn't have any problems with most of the games there.
Disclaimer: What I consider decent/playable framerates are around 20 and up, many of the games you won't be expecting 30 FPS in, certainly not 60. Also, make sure you get a cooling pad, games make laptops run hot, without additional cooling it's likely to go to emergency shut down mode if you're playing more recent games.
