There have been so many heated arguments on Giant Bomb Forums and video comments lately, and I have been a part of those and I have acted poorly on a few of them. I fucking love this website and everything it does. It's not perfect, it has a lot of problems, but I still have a lot of fun here. I'm sure a lot of you guys have a lot of fun here too! I just wanted to make a thread so we can shoot the shit, relax, and not let all these crazy discussions get to our heads too much. You guys are awesome, so let's have fun!

I've my doubts that's even possible.

It's the internet. We can't be nice to each other in real life, let alone when protected by anonymity.

#4 Posted by Clonedzero (4200 posts) -

ive noticed the community is super hostile and over-defensive. its kinda disgusting. if you make a calm rational criticism of giantbomb you get a million fanboys (yeah, i'll call them fanboys) jumping down your throat and screaming at you "you have no idea how hard their job is! ITS SO HARD GUYS! give them a break!"

or just a few minutes ago, some guy was having issues getting a video playing cus of adblock, half the posts in there are guys calling him "a fucking scumbag" for using adblock. ADBLOCK. wtf?

its getting really gross.

#5 Posted by DreadMorrison (68 posts) -

@TheDudeOfGaming: :( that makes me sad. Well I'm gonna try to do my best on my part. Also if you don't want it, give it to someone else

Agreed.

I HATE YOU AND EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR! SCUM!

#9 Posted by DreadMorrison (68 posts) -

@Clonedzero: You do have a point there sir.

But from what I see a lot of the 'fanboys' really care about this website, and some of the critics aren't as well-mannered as you are. Sometimes they just get tired of a lot of trolls. It's really hard to communicate properly, and at some point the line between a constructive criticism and a fucking asshole gets muddled, sadly. I don't know man, I'll keep trying for a little bit

#10 Posted by MordeaniisChaos (5730 posts) -

Hey FUCK YOU MAN. HOW DARE YOU. I'm the fuckin' nicest guy on the planet and you wanna start shit with me?????

Anyway. I dunno, it doesn't seem that different than the usual.

@Clonedzero: To be fair, I haven't seen a lot of legitimate critique. It's the slow season, they were just sold and bought, something most companies suffer from for a time especially when it means moving to a new location, having to re-aquire most of what you need, etc. And then there are the folks that bitch when their opinions aren't the same as the staff, and that makes the Staff wrong, but when they disagree with someone else, it's ok for them to have a differing opinion.

@Clonedzero: Using adblock takes revenue away from the site that you are using. If you aren't willing to give something for the work done to create the site, why the fuck are you here? Adblocker is so pathetic. Giantbomb ads are FINE. You aren't supposed to use adblocker. It's not the recommended way to view any site, so when it breaks, that shit is on you. Nothing is free, and you want to talk about real entitlement, it's all the fucking gamers that expect free of charge, no ads, catering directly to their wants an opinions. That's like bitching that a crack doesn't work the way you expected. Just leave the ads. They aren't hard to ignore.

#15 Posted by morrelloman (608 posts) -

If we are all nice to each other I don't know if people will have opinions. But "don't be a dick" is a good way to live life.

#16 Posted by Sackmanjones (4711 posts) -

But...why?

#17 Posted by laserbolts (5324 posts) -

Don't let some Internet hero try to make you feel bad for using ad block. Who gives a shit really? You're free to use it if you want it's your choice. This thread needs some kittens because I like the other one more.

#18 Posted by DreadMorrison (68 posts) -

@morrelloman: I think you can have opinions and be respectful. But maybe I'm just too naîve or idealistic. Your way to live is good sir, I try to follow it most times

it being slow is a legitimate critique. i'm not the one complaining about that though, but theres plenty they could do to fill in the gaps. just because there is a reason for something does not mean the critique isn't legit or valid. if i went jogging with my friend and was going slow and she complained about it, and i told her i twisted my ankle that morning, that critique would be fine, but i'd have a reason for being slower. thats no excuse to act like a hostile over defensive child like ive seen so many other times.

also, adblocker taking away revenue. yup it does. but i dont want ads shoved in my face. today there is constant media bombardment with ads, i don't want ot have to sit there filtering out ads, i just want a relaxing online experience. adblock isn't illegal. and personally i'd say using adblock is absolutely the recommended way to view any site. ads are filthy, hell ive gotten some nasty computer viruses from ads from completely legit websites (wasn't a shady site or porn or anything). im not entitled. i dont feel like i should be getting it all for free. i am. but i'm not demanding things to be done my way. i'll keep adblock on, thanks.

@joaomatosamaro: I try to be nice but, its hard for me. So I have always chosen the path of not making comments on web sites, thus I make very few posts and the like on here. Your fighting a lost cause (due to it being the internet) yet, I do respect (for what its worth) the fact that you've asked this question genuinely.

Oh, and what I meant by trying to be nice is that I'm not good speaking in a polite manner. I simply respect this site for everything it does, its not perfect or anything.

Galstaff casts a friendship spell on everyone!

#22 Posted by DreadMorrison (68 posts) -

@GTCknight: I'm just happy to be able to talk to users about this in a calm and collected manner. For me that is already a win.

Also sorry to everyone I had not idea there was a duplicate thread, that sucks. Must've done something wrong.

#23 Posted by Superkenon (1439 posts) -

Both sides of the "divide" can really serve to chill. I usually tend to side more with the 'defending team' of most circles, because "protecting" (I put that in quotes, because... yeah) something you care about always seems a more noble a goal than thrashing something you don't care about. That just seems like the worst possible waste of time. But... when the defenders start becoming too sensitive, it just comes across as simply annoying. And that's definitely happened.

It's not really so simple in this case anyway, because I think almost everyone here are here because they love Giant Bomb -- whether they're currently satisfied or not. Some show their LOVE by expressing their concerns and fears about what's going on, and others show it by voicing constant support and understanding. And both of those things are okay. Of course there's pricks in both fields, but don't let them polarize you -- OR ELSE YOU'RE... LETTING THEM WIN??

And of course... as a universal internet rule, if you want to do something about the assholes... just don't get into it with them, 'cause that's when it turns into a whole big thing. Let stupid comments remain lone stupid comments rather than quoting them all a billion times. Really trashes the place up!

LET'S HUG IT OUT

And ironic that some of the name calling is coming from people who arent even subs. Like what? Your going to condemn people for using adblock and you aren't even supporting the site?

No fuck you.

#26 Posted by frankfartmouth (1018 posts) -

This is a good online community, certainly better than most, but it has its moments for sure.

#27 Posted by Clonedzero (4200 posts) -

@Demoskinos: i block ads because ads bug and distract me. so i block them. i would subscribe if i thought the subscriber content was worth subscribing for. what do you get? an extra video or two a week? a dave radio show, the videos usually being something pretty meh like them playing a flight sim or roguelike. if subscribing actually had cool community interaction and features, i'd absolutely sign up.

me using adblock and not subscribing are two different things. i'm not going to subscribe simply cus i use adblock, thats crazy. i'll subscribe when i feel its worth subscribing to. not cus some dude is guilt tripping me about using adblock....

again, stay classy.

#28 Posted by GTCknight (698 posts) -

@joaomatosamaro: I didn't mind the clone. I just clicked both of them.

I always feel a little weird when I make post on the site, mainly due to the fact that I've made more post on Giant Bomb than any other web site.

Not using adblock IS supporting the site for people who don't have the means to do it otherwise. That's the entire purpose of internet advertising.

Many of us have been using the site for 3-4 years without any breaks.

Taking a break sometimes can be helpful.

#33 Posted by mtcantor (948 posts) -

As bad as it ever gets here, it's still nothing compared to the rest of the entire internet.

#34 Posted by nintendoeats (5975 posts) -

I think the difficulty is that we have a society that dislikes acknowledging the need for constructive criticism, so even good-natured comments are taken poorly unless they are super-positive in nature. I don't blame the internet really, I blame people not trusting eachother to be intelligent and fairminded.

#35 Posted by DreadMorrison (68 posts) -

@mtcantor: Quite true, this is multitudes better than most forums. If I posted something like this in certain other forums I'd likely receive death threats. This community is awesome, and I thought it would be nice if we remembered what makes us awesome. We're dudes (or ladies) who love video games and think the GB Crew are funny, right? That's why I come to this website, and I think that getting too heated up over arguments makes us forget that.

I've been thinking and I realized something I didn't quite notice before. Giant Bomb reminds me of Cromartie High School.

We argue and argue but, in the end nothing ever happens and we all end up just moving on with our lives.

Certainly not games. At least not this week it seems.

Sarcasm and cynicism sadly fall right in that area where people confuse what you're saying for agression, @TaliciaDragonsong. It's more than fine with me, also thanks for being nice. Also @SexyToad, you are one SEXY Toad.

@joaomatosamaro: "In My Personal Opinion" should be the go-to phrase whenever anyone has a dislike towards anything. For example,"In my personal opinion, Nintendo has the weakest game selection of all the big 3 consoles." It shouldn't be,"F&%^ NINTENDO AND THEIR SHITTY GAMES FOR F'N KIDS! CALL OF DUTY,HALO,GEARS, WHOOOO BRO!". I sincerely wish that everyone could be more respectful to others. It just does not seem likely to ever happen. A boy can dream though.

Well, ya know, t's the internet, everyone is angry all the time. Even when I'm thanking someone sometimes, they respond with "F you buddy!" because they met more people on the internet that were sarcastic/angry than those that were pleasant.

It would be great if the inhabitants of the internet spoke... erm "typed" without anger and with less sarcasm. Some do! But most of 'em don't. Guess that's just people for ya.

And I just want to say to you guys, the GB community, you're great. Keep being awesome.
