I'm currently having trouble finding a particular fighting game I once thought looked awesome. From what I could remember it was a stylized 2d game -- probably with sprites -- and was featured on one of giantbombs videos -- most likely an Unprofessional Friday.

I understand this is probably nothing to go on, but it's driving me crazy that I can't remember what this game was.

Skullgirls? One of the BlazBlues? King of Fighters?

I hadn't even realized they covered a BlazBlue here, woah.

EDIT: Ah, it was '09, that's how long it has been, no wonder!

I was thinking Skullgirls, which was already mentioned too. And Persona 4 Arena.

#5 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

No, it wasn't either of those: I checked.

I'm pretty sure it was featured on an unprofessional, or maybe their extra life stream?

@equitasinvictus: It wasn't Persona 4 Arena. I currently own that game and it wasn't it.

Mugen (M.U.G.E.N.) maybe?

#8 Edited by EquitasInvictus (2035 posts) -

@crunchyflies: Have any description of the fighting game characters to go by? I actually can't even remember on command any other 2D fighter they had on a premium stream that wasn't super old school or one of the aforementioned, I feel like that's a rare sight even in premium.

EDIT: Right! I think they did play MUGEN once at the height-ish of Salty Bet.

#9 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

@benderunit22: No, I remember them playing it, not watching a bunch of insanity on screen.

#10 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

I think I remember it being a 2d sprite based game; but it was god damn beautiful.

@crunchyflies:

Is there anymore details you can give us? Describe one of the fighters if you can.

Have you checked Garou: Mark of the Wolves? It's a really good fighting game and I know Jeff has played it a few times on camera.

#13 Posted by BenderUnit22 (1510 posts) -

Pretty sure Jeff brought Mugen to UPF at one point during the Salty Bet phase. Anyway, Jackie Chan in Fists of Fire is another obscure 2D fighting game they played. Do you have a time frame for your memory?

#14 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

@equitasinvictus: @slag: I'm not entirely sure it was for modern consoles; it might have been for the neo geo for all I remember. It also might have been for a non premium stream, but I'm absolutely sure they played it live.

#15 Edited by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

@benderunit22: Lol, it wasn't Jackie Chan. I know it was actually a good game.

Maybe Samurai Shodown?

#17 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

@mechanical_ape: I have, but it wasn't it. The game I remember was sharper looking and very stylized.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure? I'm trying to think!

Can you describe any of the characters, backgrounds, etc? Pretty much anything more specific than just 2D sprite-based fighting game. It wasn't Mark of the Wolves, was it?

You're literally giving nothing other than its a 2d sprite ("probably") fighter.

SOME specific clue would be helpful. With the amount of detail you're giving, it could well be an imagined memory.

The only others I can think of that wouldn't be really obvious would be games like Guilty Gear Xrd, Chaos Code, Melty Blood, or Under Night in Birth, although I can't recall them ever playing any of those on camera before.

Capcom vs SNK 2?

Guilty Gear?

Tatsunoko vs Capcom?

You need to give us some more to go on duder. Just saying that it's a stylized 2d fighting game is like asking for a first person shooter with a gun in it... Most fighting games in the last 20 years have been stylized 2d with sprites in some way.

Lethal League?

#28 Posted by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

I remember the bombers playing a match where the characters were inside a flying aircraft.

I'm not entirely sure but the game might have had a large amount of characters to select.

Dong Dong Never Die?

#30 Edited by Vextroid (1417 posts) -

The fighting games that I can think of that were shown on UPF or Similar streams (not Quick Looks) are:

World Heroes

King of Fighters 95(?) possibly 98

Garou: Mark of The Wolves

Street Fighter II (and Variants)

Mortal Kombats 1-3

Dong Dong Never Die (doubt this is what your were thinking of though)

Samurai Showdown I/II

Art Of Fighting (I think?)

Fatal Fury 2 and/or possibly Special?

The aircraft makes me think of a recent King of Fighters game.

Aircraft? CHO ANIKI??

#34 Edited by crunchyflies (38 posts) -

For everyone who said it was king of fighters, THANK YOU! You were totally right! I went back and watched the UPF with that game in it and I realized it WAS King of Fighters XIII, THANK YOU DUDERS!

Now I can get some sleep...

@crunchyflies: Might want to flag a post as the answer so that people browsing the forums don't come in here thinking you still don't know
