I'm not asking what game is the best. I'm asking what game would you play first, be it for the first time, or just to revisit some old (better?) times.
- The 7th Guest - CD-ROMs first 'killer app'
- Myst - The start of some of gamings hardest logic puzzles
- Return to Zork - FMVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
- Sam & Max Hit The Road - Love, Country Western music, and Bigfoots
- Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle - The Dreaded Purple Death Tentacle
- Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers - Novelists and writers never seem to have it easy
- Secret of Mana - AKA Seiken Densetsu 2 in Japan
- Sim City 2000 - I used to love building cities and seeing how many disasters I could have destroy my city
- Master of Orion - I love the sheer variety of races they have in here
- Syndicate - Steampunk? Yes please.
- Star Wars: X-Wing - 40/30/30 engines/shields/weapons
- Doom - I hear one Bradley Shoemaker is kinda good at this one
- Lemmings 2: The Tribes - Class-based lemmings. Where did we go wrong?
- Sonic CD - This version of Sonic is acceptable
- Super Mario All-Stars - It's no Super Smash Bros, but this is the first time we see some really good Nintendo compilation
- The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - Only game in the franchise to use Link's name in the title
- Kirby's Adventure - A bit like Pee Wee's Big Adventure...except not
- Star Fox - Kinda like that old Battlezone game. Wireframe goodness, but in the air instead of on the ground.
- Ridge Racer (arcade) - Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racerrrrrrr
- Virtua Fighter (arcade) - My young foolish self seriously thought graphics couldn't get better after seeing this in a cabinet
- Mortal Kombat II (arcade) - Real, full on red blood. Rated NC-17
When making the list for this year (check out the other polls I made for 94 95 96 97 98 and 99 ) I seriously thought I had too many games up there. How can there be this many quality releases in one year? Forget quality, how can there be this many crucial and founding games? Obviously the games are right there for you to check out, I don't have to tell you the significance behind each title. Just be happy we live in the times we do.
My personal choice would be Myst. I'm sorry, I'm a sucker, but it's just a world you can lose yourself in, taking notes, studying every scene, packed with so much detail....I should go install it actually. Also, I love how this is pretty much the golden age of Adventure games.
