Community Game Of The Year 2015 Voting Results

We allowed any logged-in user to vote for their personal top 10 games of 2015 during the week in which we were rolling out the staff and guest lists, with a few extra days on the end to ensure that everyone had time to get their votes in after the long break we hope you had. The process isn't too hard to explain: everyone made a list of up to ten games, with a first place vote counting for more points than a second place vote and so on.

8,042 people voted with a total of 69,049 votes for individual games being cast. (Lists could have fewer than 10 games if a voter didn't have 10 favorite games from the year.) We let people vote on any game in the wiki, so a few of these are going to be games that came out of early access or stand-ins for games that weren't separately votable, such as Destiny (presumably standing in for Destiny: The Taken King, which was an expansion released in 2015).

Just for funsies, here's a list of games ranked by total number of votes cast, without being weighted according to their position in a top 10 list. In other words, this is the number of lists out of those 8042 on which each game appeared.

Wow, pretty incredible to see how close MGS and The Witcher were, and then how much of a huge gap there is to the #3 slot.

Seems like everybody who listed Monster Hunter put it really high on their lists. Are there any people who think Monster Hunter is alright, but not obsessed with it? Seems like everyone is either completely uninterested or a total nerd bordering on unhealthy addict like myself.

I'm so happy to see Life is Strange make it into the top 10! It was my personal GOTY and it didn't get a lot of buzz until later in the year (good work GBE!). Also I see users enjoyed The Witcher 3 more than the staff did. I wonder if anyone one in SF or NYC will try the game again when the second expansion launches.

I'm glad Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate got some love on the fan list, if only a bit minor.

Wow, I wish Fallout 4 was a better game. Everything in it besides the shooting is a big step backwards in quality from previous games, especially New Vegas (which is Obsidian and doesn't count, yadda yadda yadda, I know). Most disappointing game of the year by far. I guess it's good enough for a lot of people, and tastes vary and all that jazz, but I wish people were willing to hold Bethesda to a higher standard, especially after CDPR ate their lunch with the far superior Witcher 3.

This list is cool and mostly not bad.

Trivia: the process of assigning points based on the ranking is called the Borda count method. It would be interesting to see what the results would be for different methods.

@zgoon: I started playing it last night and I love it. It's what I want in a space sim. Not too much sim but enough to make you think about what you're doing.

If every vote was worth atleast one point, why are there fewer points then votes?

@orange_pork: Monster Hunter is alright! I played it for a while. One of those giant games I wish I had more time to play, but also there's the multiplayer features I don't see myself using much.

I loved doing this last year and this year was great as well. It's interesting to see what everyone liked over the year. Hopefully this will be a thing for a long time to come.

And I'm honestly surprised to see Heroes make it at 30. That was my number 3 game and didn't think many people on the site would have voted for it.

So the real outliers in the gbcast top10 compared to the community are Grow Home and Invisible Inc., the former barely making at the 29th spot and the latter not even appearing

That would be a question for @edgework. Not sure what we have available but if there's anonymized data I'm sure we'd be fine with releasing it.

I wasn't expecting this, but I'm actually happier with the staff list than I am with the community list.

Kerbal ranks higher in weighted than where it does in number of votes cast. Guess that means it made a lot of Top 5's and Top 3's? It was definitely my #1.
