Yes. Actually, there was a span of roughly four years in my life that I couldn't even tell you what the hottest games coming out were.

The year I spent with a Wii could hardly be called gaming!

Hey-o!

#4 Posted by Killroycantkill (1320 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

After listening to the new A Life Well Wasted I wondered if I could quit videogames for a year like this one guy they had on. He quit videogames for a year (All videogames, computer, flash, console, portable, facebook). Do you think you guys could do it? I think I would eventually give up because there is just so much temptation and I have been playing videogames since I can remeber. I think I would give up around big release season lol.

So do you guys think you could do it?

#5 Posted by EvilTwin (3320 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Is this question inspired by the most recent episode of a Life Well Wasted by any chance?  Anyways, I probably could if I wanted to.  I'd end up reading a lot more I daresay.

Of course not.

#7 Posted by SaucySala (341 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I sometimes can go months without touching games that much. I actually could live by just watching the gentlemen here play games on quicklooks!

I'd probably just go to watching more movies or something... They are fun in social situations though... (Co-op fun-ness)

#8 Posted by Jayzilla (2388 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

i did that in 04. also in 99.

Barring an apocalypse that busts up the power lines so I can't get electricity? No. Abso-fucking-lutely not.

Yes, I'd have no problem with it. Like I've said a million times before, games are not everything in life.

#11 Posted by JJOR64 (18123 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

No.  I would be fucking bored out of my mind.

#12 Edited by MKHavoc (1305 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

No.  This might sound bad, but I don't know what I'd do without games.  I spend most of my free time either playing games or on sites like this one where I can talk and read about them.

EDIT: This thread also got me thinking that I should probably subscribe to A Life Well Wasted.

Nah that would suck hard

#14 Posted by L4wz (377 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Life without video games is like a life without sex.

@DanielJW:
Ohohoho high five!

I could hold out for a while, but I'd have to be supplied with other things to take my time.
I sold most of my video games during High School and went gameless for a long time. I do kind of regret now because I would love to be playing my old GameCube and Dreamcast games (especially GTA 2 on the old 'cast).
#16 Posted by Bigandtasty (3144 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

If it were just PC/console I could do it. If I also could not use flash games to pass the time, I'd be screwed.

#17 Posted by ieatlions (708 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

yes , if i had to

#18 Posted by EpicSteve (6123 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

It really sucks. But they're are other ways to entertain one self...like, knitting, painting, and killing yourself.

#19 Posted by pause422 (6068 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I have before. Combination of choice, nothing to play at the time when I had free time, and just overall too busy to play any anyway.

#20 Posted by Ashwyn (202 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I'm one of those people who'd like to think they can, but in reality i'd proberly start hallucinating about Mass Effect 2 after about 2 months...

Unless i had season 1 to 13 of South Park and all of American Dad. If that was the case i really couldn't say.

#21 Posted by Breadfan (6056 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I could go without games for a year if I had to, but it would suck.

#22 Posted by Fbomb (1165 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

This sounds like a challenge to me. I should attempt to go through 2010 without playing a video game. Unfortunately it'd feel like a waste of investment of a PS3/Wii and a back-catalogue of games that I haven't played yet.

With how boring television has gotten, it would be very very very very hard. Ever since shows are more reality based I found my time for playing video games being much more then it was when I was a kid. Talk to me when TV gets better then maybe I would have a chance!

I went a year and a bit with no games other than WoW. Does that count?

#26 Posted by Wolverine (4240 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

The truth is I could quit for a year pretty easily. I don't play that often these days and I could get along occupying my time with other forms of media such as films or books.

#27 Posted by Dr_Feelgood38 (1550 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I basically do quit during the school year. I mean, sure, I get one or two matches in MW2 going when I can on the weekends but during the weekdays I can't touch any games. Yes, I do think I could quit.

#28 Posted by Rayfield (2098 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Hell no. This current generation of games are amazing. And with Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Brink, Max Payne 3, Splinter Cell Convinction, Dark Void, FF13 all coming out next year, I'd be driven batshit insane knowing I couldn't play them.

I'd rather give up watching TV. It's total garbage.

I probably could but I'd need something to fill the void.

#31 Posted by Hamst3r (3938 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Yes. The real question is, why the fuck would I want to? I wouldn't.

Now, if you were paying me a few million to not play video games for a year, I'd do it.
#32 Posted by ArbitraryWater (8973 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I could, but it would be really hard.

#33 Posted by jonnyboy (2910 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I worked for years in EB, and after a few months I hated games, and the fuckheads buying them. Now I love games, and hate the fuckheads selling them. Weird.

Lol I don't think I'd even last that long. I'd last like 3 hours before I'd start shaking.

It has happened, but now video games are fully imprinted into my life now when considering what I spend my free time on willingly and gladly, might I add.

#37 Edited by CaptainTightPants (2776 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I dont play on the weekdays due to homework, Saturdays i try but usually ends up being time spent outside with others, Sundays is then weekend homwork time. -_-
Although i dont get much time, videogames would be on the back of my mind and i could not go 1 month without them.

Totally agree. Games are too awesome to just one day say, "I'm not gonna play any video games for a WHOLE FUCKING YEAR." However, given legitimate reason to do so, I must say that you have serious issues if you honestly think you couldn't do it.
#39 Posted by bwooduhs (1609 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I could but im not going to.

#40 Posted by triple07 (1053 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Well for a year or two last gen I actually did but I'm not sure if I could now as it has become a bigger part of my life now. I still could do it if I really wanted to but I don't see myself doing that.

#41 Posted by CitizenKane (10459 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

I could, yes, but it would be a very tough year.

#42 Posted by Red12b (8817 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Depends, If it was a year where only rehashes and NFS11 and MLB 12 and NFL 12, Yeah i can skip that no prob.

But next year will contain a few games that I have been waiting for since I heard about them, Most noteable Heavy Rain.
I will cut down anyone who stands in the way of me getting that game.

Anyone.
#43 Posted by PureRok (4230 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

No.

#44 Posted by LiquidSwords (2741 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Yes I've done this before. The last console I owned was a PS2. That broke like 2 years ago. I bought an XBOX 360 off a friend in May '09.

#45 Posted by ThatFrood (3254 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

psht yeah

#46 Posted by Emandudeguyperson (2503 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Yes, but I would be bored beyond belief.

#47 Edited by MrKlorox (11080 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Not if I had access to them. But if I didn't, I could handle it as long as I had another form of escape; perhaps chemical.

#48 Posted by TwoOneFive (9449 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

once i join the military, i'll be playing very little of videogames for about 2 years straight while i train.

#49 Posted by Gunner612 (4338 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago

Probably, i dont really play many games anymore so im already half way there.

#50 Posted by scarace360 (4828 posts) - 3 years, 5 months ago
