Crytek announced yesterday that its upcoming CryENGINE 3 engine - which will power Crysis 2, among other things - will be jumping on the bandwagon and going 3D.

The last CryENGINE is still the benchmark for top shelf graphical performance on the PC, so news it's successor is going 3D will have those somehow convinced this is the future salivating. Being a multiplatform engine the 3D tech is multiplatform, too, so if a developer wants a game in 3D, it'll run in 3D across the PC, 360 and PS3 if so desired.

The first demo footage of this new tech will be shown off at the Game Developers Conference later this month.

How is 3D gonna work? Do you need a monitor/graphics card/HDTV with 3D support in it somewhere?

I don't think we'll be seeing 3D being a mainstream thing in gaming for a bit of a while. Perhaps someone can pull it off, but not graphically gorgeous looking like Avatar. Crysis is pretty much the only contender for that. Hell not many games look as technically good looking as Crysis and its already been more than 2 years since its release.

Yeah, cool. Am I the only who's fairly 'meh' about this?

Until the player is actually in a virtual world, I don't care about 3D.

I guess I'm that only guy that thinks 3D isn't needed.

Their engine will have to be optimized as hell in order to run 3D at Crysis level settings. And judging by Crytek's track record...yeah.

Yes it will be, but I'm betting since the the engine is already optimized for consoles, it shouldn't be a huge issue for PCs.

GTA IV for PC is not well optimized.

Different game, but there are examples that it might be a issue.

It's just sad that they're not re-releasing the original for consoles.

From what I've heard, you need a 3D compatible graphics card and special nvidia glasses. There's also a pseudo-3D effect that utilizes high refresh rate (120 Hz) televisions.
