Current-Gen made me depise consoles for good.

Well, technically Microsoft did, I never owned a PS3. But I'll explain in a second. Since the launch of the 360, I've been mesmerized by the capability of instantly downloading demos and full games on a console that also let me keep tabs on my friends. Everything seemed fine and dandy until over the years, a thick fog over this console cleared, revealing its true purpose.

Demoes started to become sparse and uninteresting. the once beloved Live Arcade games went from grand and unique to lackluster and common. Soon, Microsoft began selling full games online. Of course, they were playing us the fool by thinking we'll still buy a game at it's listed price when the title is already half the price used in stores. Why would anyone even bother?

Then came the apps and their push to become an entertainment system rather than a gaming console. The one-stop machine to do all that you wish, basically.

Irrelevant advertisements about every single thing I wasnt interested in. Seeing faux-celebs faces raising awareness for some junk they just crapped out, only to be forgotten the following week. Movies spots on my dashboard I reluctantly paid for, specifically aiming at target demographics that are smarter than they were 7-8 years ago. This black box instantly became something I despised turning on.

I realized that if I want to be happy with the games I want to play, I would need to invest in a pretty good PC...which I did within the past 2 weeks. No Miley Cyrus ad's. No Linkin Park potato chips. No fully priced shitty downloads. Just games. Within the next few days, I'll be uploading images of my first PC rig built on a midrange budget.

For now, I felt the need to let this out on a site I fully appreciate most. I hope to contribute more on GB, even if its more rambling like this and maybe even end up participating in next year's Extra Life event. Seeing how much everyone here raised and how you've all endured made me really happy to be amongst actual good people.

The fuck?

XBLA Arcade games started as thing like Pacman and Paperboy etc.

Soon after we were getting Braid, Shadow Complex etc.

Most recently Brothers, Fez, Trials Evolution?

Pretty good progression in my opinion.

360 was good from '06-'09 in terms of exclusives. Then MS realized that they didn't have to get good exclusives to move more units. They banked it all on Madden, CoD and RRoD replacements(some people don't have the time to wait for the coffin to ship and the replacement to arrive)

I never liked the whole ad-ecosystem MS has either and their Live service felt like paying for basically nothing(P2P). It was the worst console of this generation for me.

You can never go wrong with PC though. The sales never end!

@astagnantsleep: You lament that consoles are now all-in-one machines so you went out and spent more money on an all-in-one machine? And you want awful, irrelevant ads? Do a Google search or look at literally any website. And you'll still be paying full price for any game you want to play in the launch window for that game on PC. I guess I just don't get it...

I depised my console once....it was a mess....

I love how you word your argument though. Microsoft are a bunch of fucking assholes for turning their once gaming focused console into an all-in-one entertainment center. Them trying to turn the xbox into a PC is what made you switch to a PC.....It's like saying you emigrated from the US to Sweden because you hated all the socialist reforms implemented by the US government. I'm not saying you're wrong or right, but it's just really funny.

@nekroskop: that's how Unsee it as well. Sales all day. Sales on sales on sales.

@oginor looking at steam these past few days,I can already tell how much cheaper it is to buy games there than on a console.

@SamFo did you read the common part I said? All three games you mentioned are on Steam. All three run best on a PC. Why would I need to spend $15 on Brothers when I could mostly likely find it half price in the next few weeks?

It's really simple: You will never have the choices on a closed platform like the xbox as you have on the PC. Ads bother you: use Adblock. Don't want to pay retail price on release: buy a key. You're getting bombed with sales.

@astagnantsleep: Meh...not really on the AAA stuff. XBLM and Steam pricing is identical from what I can find on many games that fall into that category. You get sales, but the MSFT GoD sales are great too (quite often, it's the same as Steam's Summer Sale in terms of content that the two platforms share). The upside is that there are more services offering differing sales, not so much the quality of the sales.

@vinny_says: its more of a statement than an argument. I wouldn't really buy a PC if it came with Windows 8 and had a bunch of Metro tiles saying SPONSORED BY DORITOS or KANYES NEW ALBUM OUT NOW. I'd prefer something with the basics. If I want to watch a movie, I'll go out and see it in a theater. If I want to listen to music, I'll buy the album in store. Just give me games where I play my games. Its gonna sound like a scratched record every time I mention PC but it doesn't have all thatthat extra junk shoved in my face if I don't want it.

Since I bought a 360 with my first student loan, my gaming tastes have changed dramatically. I play only a fraction of what I used to and am content to wait for AAA games to get cheap. (I JUST played Arhkam Asylum thanks to a humble bundle.) My PC is far from stellar, yet I'm happy with what I get out of it performance wise. Living in Taiwan definitely makes upgrades much more affordable. And even with new retail 360 games costing only around $40 the only game I've bought for Xbox is GTA V.

I don't blame Microsoft though, they're doing what's best for business and it's working for them. I won't be buying a new console, but I am very interested to see how they look, especially the UI. It is tempting just to have a new toy. Funnily enough, the TV features are the most interesting part of it to me now, but I doubt ANY of that will have any value to an Englishman living in Taiwan.

Because I'd rather give money to the people that actually made the game versus lining Gamestop's (or your used game retailer of choice) pockets? You do realize that the retailer is the only one who makes money off of those used games, and not the developer/publisher? That bothers me enough that I will not buy a used game.

So, Microsoft slathered the 360's front end with ads. That sucks, it really does. But it's part of the price you pay for a closed system that just works: they can more or less do what they want to it. In return, you don't have to put up with nearly as many issues as you wound with the PC; the vast majority of the time you just turn it on and play, which is a boon for the vast majority of people.

You also say "no fully priced shitty downloads" as a positive for the PC. May I ask where you are getting your used retail PC games? I certainly cannot find a store that stocks them. And while Steam and the like are great for sales, you are still going to pay full price for new titles out of the gate, whereas (if you are so inclined) you can usually find a used copy of a new console game a week or two later with a minor discount. Frankly, I'd call that a wash.

As a person who wanted the absolute best that gaming can offer, I built a system that could, at the time, handle just about every game at 1920x1200 at 60FPS. This cost a fair amount of money; you needed dual GPUs, SSDs were new, Intel was just cranking up Sandy Bridge production, and so on. Even today, that system can still handle the vast majority of games with little issue.

But there is no denying the tradeoff for such performance; Crossfire is more of a crapshoot than it should be, PC ports of games can still lag behind their console counterparts (even though they have improved over time), and if you really want to showcase the improvement over a console (higher resolution, stable 60FPS, better texture and lighting quality), it still costs a fair amount of money to do so. In fact, it can cost a LOT of money; it isn't just the PC, soon you're dropping $500 just on a good IPS monitor, because "What's the point in having a machine push all those pixels if the monitor craps them up?"

It's a slight exaggeration, but you get my point: PCs can be great. PCs are not a perfect solution. PCs and consoles are both valid purchases for different people. I hope you enjoy your new PC, but keep in mind the fact that you are just trading one set of pros and cons for another.

Ehh not really, Origin has come a long way and BF 4 and (if it turns out being a good game) Titanfall will be more than worth it to tolerate having another client on your PC

Yea, probably. Battlefront is still coming out in like 2015 or something. Then there's still that strange shooter-gap in Fall 2014. E3 will probably still have some good stuff. Dragon Age seems pretty legit right about now. 'Couse C&C would have make a nice home on Origin, though. Hm. Peggle 2 and PvZ GW are still coming out on Origin, etc.

But yea, that Titanfall season pass better be worth it. Hm.

You say that as though it was a conspiracy that they planned back in 2004, when in reality, they were most likely reacting to how customers were behaving. They brought out the apps and entertainment center stuff partly because of what Nintendo did with the casual market, but more likely because of what the iPhone's been doing to the culture since....2008, I think? Businesses have to adapt.

Yup sounds about right. For me this happened in 2009 when I bought 20 games for $100 at my first Steam sale. I didn't even have a proper gaming PC then. After that consoles just seemed overpriced.

The occasional sale on Greenmangaming is pretty good too. Plus they give you store credit when you buy games on there.

So you spend $1000 plus on a new PC and then wrote a blog about how you made the right choice? Sounds like a case of cognitive dissonance to me.

So you bought a PC then? Ok. Congrats. The 360 did have some seriously lackluster years and they kinda pissed on their loyal customers at a certain point.

I stay away prom PC gaming for the hassle, maintenance and know-how that come with it. I don't so much care about 60fps vs 30fps, I just want the game to work the minute I get home and put it in the damn thing. And I want that to happen every time. To each their own.
