Wow, I feel like this thread got to 100 views in record time. People really do still care about Star Wars. Even if (when) Episode VII is awful, most of us are probably still going to see it...Midnight showing!
Disney buys LucasArts. Announces Star Wars Episode 7...WHAT?
Straight crazy new. Not really pumped on it either. Disney's track record is kinda spotty, and they also love their merchandising.
Which makes it a good thing Star Wars never fell prey to that.
Wait.
I don't want to be too optimistic, but... guys? I think I'd rather have the studio that backed The Avengers and Pixar doing this rather than the current incarnation of Lucasfilm. I'm... not sure how you make a proper Episode VII, but after all the stuff that currently exists alongside the films in that universe, yeah, I don't oppose it outright.
Also, anybody know what this means for all the Lucas gaming rights? Is Monkey Island the movie by Pixar now a thing that can happen? Because holy shit.
Going to have to wait until trailers start to hit but for right now I can't be any less interested in a Disney produced Star Wars film.
I will say one thing.
2015 is WAY too soon to do a new Star Wars movie properly. Disney should really spend a bit of time REALLY working on scripts. They shouldn't have any difficulty finding great writers who would jump at a chance. I say you can make a great competition of scripts among the industry.
I also hope that a new Star Wars film has no relationship to the established films other than the setting. We need completely new characters.
I'm not sure why some people see this as a bad thing. George Lucas has some good ideas, he contributed a lot to the original movies and the Clone Wars seasons, but he's a terrible film maker. Putting him in a position as a creative consultant and letting other people make the actual movies is a much better plan and Disney tend to know what they're doing. They're not going to gut LucasFilm and "Mickey Mouse" everything up and that's ignoring the fact Star Wars has already been a marketing cash cow targeting little kids since Episode VI. The situation is no different from when they bought Marvel, they're smart enough to know what not to mess with.
And literally nothing they do could be worse than Episodes 1 and 2.
Since Disney bought Pixar they have been sequelzing and 3D-ifying all of there movies, for better or worse.. Star Wars is already being 3D-ified, and Disney, before the ink has dried has announced a sequel, I guess that's the Disney way, buy up a company and use it.. but not in an Activision way..
I think as long as they stay away from the last trilogy, this could work out. There are plenty of comics and books that have had WAY better stories and much stronger/ more interesting characters.
I hope it's just a prolonged snuff film of people in Star Wars costumes torturing George Lucas with his CG budget at their disposal. No CG though. All practical effects!

Well, imagine Joss Whedon or Brad Bird or Sam Mendes or JJ Abrams or etc. getting to make a Star Wars movie.
Give me the Michael Bay Star Wars. It will be even MORE racist than the prequels and a Death Star will blow up every ten minutes.

SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!@!
Should be interesting to see how they decide to do the next episodes. I would assume they would just make a giant leap past everything and start a new legacy. Good or bad I'll still watch it. Doomed to the end to be a Star Wars fan I guess heh.

My Star Wars self has to think anything they do to take the reins away from Geroge Lucas is a good move. Also, bring on another Trilogy of Star Wars. I can't imagine they can do worse than they did with the prequels and even if they did, I don't care anymore =D
Given how much my interest in Star Wars has faded over the past 10, this is exactly what I'm thinking. Lucas has milked it so bad that it's embarrassing to have once called yourself a fan of Star Wars. Let Disney do it. They're letting Marvel do some good work in film, and maybe they'll listen to fan feedback and see what works in the extended universe.
So I suppose George Lucas is preparing for his eventual death? I don't really see any other reason considering how much a control freak he is over his creations. (I realize he's only like 68 but still getting up there in age). Both studios have hit and misses, but who knows what Disney will do with LucasFilm's IPs.
The only good thing to come out of StarWars in recent years has been the 1st Force Unleashed, and the 3rd and 4th seasons of that Clone Wars cartoon.
I actually think Disney could make a better starwars movie than Lucas.
I went to Episode 3 at midnight opening night dressed as Darth Vader with a $125 lightsaber as a kid...... how time changes you....
fuck Star Wars, i'm more interested in what this means for the Grim Fandango or Full Throttle licences, were game IP's a part of this deal?

Yes, LucasArts and their IPs were also bought. Star Wars 1313 may get cancelled given how Disney is not really interested in the game space or maybe the Star Wars license will get them back into video games.
God damn, what if Warren Spector makes a Deus Ex style game in the Star Wars universe!!!
I refuse to form an opinion on this news until Giant Bomb's resident Star Wars expert Jeff Gerstmann weighs in on it.
I am incapable of having a rational reaction to this.
That being said, my initial reaction is disgust and hatred for everyone and everything involved-- including Star Wars, Disney, capitalism, and Earth.
...Like I said, not entirely rational.
Can't be any worse then Eps 1-3. As long as they don't do some reboot that screws with the time line or such. The Star Wars universe is so large and the time line soooooo long, they really have a chance here to start something awesome.
New trilogy, new characters, new stuff going on? Awesome. I just hope they don't try to tie it into the other movies too hard, because that could sink the whole thing from the start, but the idea of a whole new set of Star Wars films sounds good to me.
