Wow, I feel like this thread got to 100 views in record time. People really do still care about Star Wars. Even if (when) Episode VII is awful, most of us are probably still going to see it...

I thought this was a joke.. I really weird strange good morning..

I fear for Star Wars.. Or do I.. George Lucas turned his own franchise to shit so maybe.. maybe..

I do not know what to think at all

#103 Posted by CrossTheAtlantic (1145 posts) -

Straight crazy new. Not really pumped on it either. Disney's track record is kinda spotty, and they also love their merchandising.

Which makes it a good thing Star Wars never fell prey to that.

Wait.

#104 Posted by Funkydupe (3318 posts) -

I still care about this fracking IP.

#105 Posted by NoelVeiga (1099 posts) -

I don't want to be too optimistic, but... guys? I think I'd rather have the studio that backed The Avengers and Pixar doing this rather than the current incarnation of Lucasfilm. I'm... not sure how you make a proper Episode VII, but after all the stuff that currently exists alongside the films in that universe, yeah, I don't oppose it outright.

Also, anybody know what this means for all the Lucas gaming rights? Is Monkey Island the movie by Pixar now a thing that can happen? Because holy shit.

#106 Posted by chilibean_3 (1639 posts) -

Going to have to wait until trailers start to hit but for right now I can't be any less interested in a Disney produced Star Wars film.

#107 Posted by flindip (533 posts) -

I will say one thing.

2015 is WAY too soon to do a new Star Wars movie properly. Disney should really spend a bit of time REALLY working on scripts. They shouldn't have any difficulty finding great writers who would jump at a chance. I say you can make a great competition of scripts among the industry.

I also hope that a new Star Wars film has no relationship to the established films other than the setting. We need completely new characters.

#108 Edited by WinterSnowblind (7616 posts) -

I'm not sure why some people see this as a bad thing. George Lucas has some good ideas, he contributed a lot to the original movies and the Clone Wars seasons, but he's a terrible film maker. Putting him in a position as a creative consultant and letting other people make the actual movies is a much better plan and Disney tend to know what they're doing. They're not going to gut LucasFilm and "Mickey Mouse" everything up and that's ignoring the fact Star Wars has already been a marketing cash cow targeting little kids since Episode VI. The situation is no different from when they bought Marvel, they're smart enough to know what not to mess with.

And literally nothing they do could be worse than Episodes 1 and 2.

#109 Posted by Genkkaku (735 posts) -

Since Disney bought Pixar they have been sequelzing and 3D-ifying all of there movies, for better or worse.. Star Wars is already being 3D-ified, and Disney, before the ink has dried has announced a sequel, I guess that's the Disney way, buy up a company and use it.. but not in an Activision way..

I think the way you make a good Star Wars is allowing Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) direct it. That's step one. Then you get Joss Whedon to a draft of the screenplay while he goes off to do The Avengers 2. There you go. Star Wars is cool again.

YES! Iron Man and Darth Vader in my party would be awesome!

#113 Posted by SlashDance (1814 posts) -

Meh ! Let them make a dumb new Star Wars movie. I will probably even enjoy watching it.

#114 Posted by KrypticKiller (191 posts) -

I think as long as they stay away from the last trilogy, this could work out. There are plenty of comics and books that have had WAY better stories and much stronger/ more interesting characters.

#115 Edited by TeflonBilly (4713 posts) -

I hope it's just a prolonged snuff film of people in Star Wars costumes torturing George Lucas with his CG budget at their disposal. No CG though. All practical effects!

Nowhere to go but up.

#117 Posted by Funkydupe (3318 posts) -

This reminds me. I'm going to try the SWTOR game again when it goes free to play.

#118 Posted by Dixavd (1358 posts) -

If there is only one good thing that comes out of this - let's hope it is an amazing Star Wars level in the next Kingdom Hearts game.

#119 Posted by Jay_Ray (1098 posts) -

Well, imagine Joss Whedon or Brad Bird or Sam Mendes or JJ Abrams or etc. getting to make a Star Wars movie.

#120 Posted by Phatmac (5726 posts) -

I hope it's good. I've disliked Star Wars for a while now so I hope they can win me back.

#121 Posted by _Chad (962 posts) -

Here's my thoughts: Who gives a fuck? People are still going to watch it.

Give me the Michael Bay Star Wars. It will be even MORE racist than the prequels and a Death Star will blow up every ten minutes.

#123 Posted by Gnubberen (770 posts) -

Hmmm... well.. at least Disney might put out the original editions of the original trilogy.

Should be interesting to see how they decide to do the next episodes. I would assume they would just make a giant leap past everything and start a new legacy. Good or bad I'll still watch it. Doomed to the end to be a Star Wars fan I guess heh.

I also want a Lars Von Trier Star Wars that is made entirely following Dogme 95

#127 Posted by flindip (533 posts) -

The one potential diamond in all of this.

The Force theme could have emotional impact again. One of the most powerful film themes in movie history.

My Star Wars self has to think anything they do to take the reins away from Geroge Lucas is a good move. Also, bring on another Trilogy of Star Wars. I can't imagine they can do worse than they did with the prequels and even if they did, I don't care anymore =D

Given how much my interest in Star Wars has faded over the past 10, this is exactly what I'm thinking. Lucas has milked it so bad that it's embarrassing to have once called yourself a fan of Star Wars. Let Disney do it. They're letting Marvel do some good work in film, and maybe they'll listen to fan feedback and see what works in the extended universe.

Well the whole franchise can't possibly get any worse anyhow.. can it?

C'mon, I hate the prequels, too. But this is just nerd hyperbole. Of course they can. They can get much worse.

If Lucas is writing, anything could happen

#130 Posted by CornBREDX (5262 posts) -

Maybe they will make it better. Disney isn't always great, but they tend to buy great studios. Marvel for instance isn't doing to bad, and Pixar... well Pixar is generally pretty great.

This could be a good thing. We'll just have to wait and see.

#131 Posted by Lumley (959 posts) -

That's.. good news I guess? I'm indecisive about this but I love the Star Wars universe so hopefully it's really going to turn out well.

#132 Posted by Jazzycola (662 posts) -

So I suppose George Lucas is preparing for his eventual death? I don't really see any other reason considering how much a control freak he is over his creations. (I realize he's only like 68 but still getting up there in age). Both studios have hit and misses, but who knows what Disney will do with LucasFilm's IPs.

#133 Posted by vikingdeath1 (968 posts) -

The only good thing to come out of StarWars in recent years has been the 1st Force Unleashed, and the 3rd and 4th seasons of that Clone Wars cartoon.

I actually think Disney could make a better starwars movie than Lucas.

I went to Episode 3 at midnight opening night dressed as Darth Vader with a $125 lightsaber as a kid...... how time changes you....

#134 Edited by StingerMK2 (386 posts) -

fuck Star Wars, i'm more interested in what this means for the Grim Fandango or Full Throttle licences, were game IP's a part of this deal?

#135 Posted by Jay_Ray (1098 posts) -

@TeflonBilly: We can do that. It will be about a man searching for his father that thought his son died many moons ago.

#136 Posted by gaminghooligan (1443 posts) -

man I don't give a shit who owns them, just give me the real movies! Han shot first dammit.

Yes, LucasArts and their IPs were also bought. Star Wars 1313 may get cancelled given how Disney is not really interested in the game space or maybe the Star Wars license will get them back into video games.

God damn, what if Warren Spector makes a Deus Ex style game in the Star Wars universe!!!

#139 Edited by UitDeToekomst (714 posts) -

I refuse to form an opinion on this news until Giant Bomb's resident Star Wars expert Jeff Gerstmann weighs in on it.

#140 Edited by AngriGhandi (778 posts) -

I am incapable of having a rational reaction to this.

That being said, my initial reaction is disgust and hatred for everyone and everything involved-- including Star Wars, Disney, capitalism, and Earth.

...Like I said, not entirely rational.

@meaninoflife42 said:

I think this will mean great things, Lucas no longer has control and this deal will allow a director that loves Star Wars do to the franchise what JJ Abrams did to Star Trek.

@StingerMK2 said:

Since LucasArts is a subsidiary of LucasFilm, I'm going to guess that's included in the deal?

#143 Posted by sins_of_mosin (1556 posts) -

Can't be any worse then Eps 1-3.  As long as they don't do some reboot that screws with the time line or such.  The Star Wars universe is so large and the time line soooooo long, they really have a chance here to start something awesome.

#144 Posted by Abendlaender (2803 posts) -

#146 Posted by Make_Me_Mad (3092 posts) -

New trilogy, new characters, new stuff going on? Awesome. I just hope they don't try to tie it into the other movies too hard, because that could sink the whole thing from the start, but the idea of a whole new set of Star Wars films sounds good to me.

#147 Posted by fox01313 (5072 posts) -

Well for me this is even more of a death of Lucasarts to me (at least in me being interested in what's made), guessing it's going to be more kid friendly than ever before with more wookie holiday programs & jar jar.

#148 Posted by Masin (131 posts) -

It's Star Wars. Shut up and take my money already.

#149 Posted by ShaneDev (1696 posts) -

Cool. Hope they don't get the old actors back though or make it entirly CGI with the old actors. Put it well past the originals and don't let Lucas near it and it could be good.

#150 Posted by Nelander (177 posts) -

I wonder what this mean for chances of a blue ray non special edition of the original trilogy. Disney likes to milk their franchises of as much dvd money as they can and they know a good number of people would like this.
