I think its interesting and can support it to a certain extent. I wouldn't, however, want the majority of game developers to follow this trend.

Your title was momentarily baffling.   I think that it sort of depends on what kind of game it is... a multiplayer game such as Battlefield with tons of potential longevity can get away with being marketed this way, whereas perhaps single player experiences, IE "Episodic Content" would probably piss a lot more people off and get less purchases.
