Poll Do you always watch cutscenes? (217 votes)

Yes, of course. 75%
No, never. 4%
Mostly. 19%
Hardly. 3%
(See Results) 1%

I got into an argument with a friend about this, he think no one cares about the story and that most people skip the cutscenes. I think anyone who skips cutscenes is crazy and should be punished for such a cruel act.

What do you do? I know nearly all of you will say yes since we are on a video game website, but do you think most people watch them or don't care?

The fucking worst is playing co op with people who skip cutscenes, I feel like hunting them down.

Always on the first playthrough. I skip rarely, I found myself skipping a few of Ni no Kuni's cutscenes because the story itself didn't really grab me. I love the game, the gameplay and combat are very fun, but the story is a bit... cheesy. And I watched most of Ghibli's work... so I found it a bit weak.

I play most games for an interactive movie experience, it would make no sense to skip the cutscenes. I'll skip them on my second run though. I always guessed that people who do not care about story are going straight to multiplayer.

First playthrough I always watch cutscenes. Becomes almost boring if there were no cutscenes in most modern games.

If they're shitty and non-compelling I skip them unless someone I'm playing with is interested.

Of course. Even if the story is lousy, people put time and effort into the cutscenes, and I watch them.

Cutscenes are responsible for a lot of my OCD vs ADD tug-of-wars if I don't find the story compelling.

On a first playthrough, I never skip a thing. Even on other playthroughs, I end up watching them 99% of the time. I play games for the story, so I care more about them than the gameplay, a good portion of the time.

I have and will skip cutscenes if I am uninterested in the story. Of course, with most modern games if you aren't interested in the story there probably isn't much interesting or unique to offer in the game design either so I'd probably call the game a total loss at that point.

When I played the Metal Gear Rising demo recently I skipped all the cutscenes, partly because it was a demo but mostly cause for the first time in a while I just didn't care I wanted to get to the action as fast as possible.

Even in games where I don't care about the story I always watch the cutscenes. It's just ingrained in me at this point.

Yes. I figure even if the story is bad they deserve at least one watch through. I like having at least general context for my objectives in games.

For the most part yes. I did skip a few in Ni no Kuni, because a lot of them seem to go on and on with out really going anywhere.

I can only remember one game where I just skipped everything and that was Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. I loved that game but only because of the gameplay. I have no idea who I was or why I was fighting.

How do you know the story isn't grabbing you if you skip the cutscenes? That line of reasoning sounds a little flawed.

I always watch the cutscenes!

I feel like there might be case here or there where I've done it on the first playthrough (now that I think about it I accidentally skipped one in Crysis 3), but yeah, I pretty much always watch cutscenes on the first run.

Yes because they usually are my favorite parts and when I accidentally skip them I get pissed. Like when I was playing MGS3 for the first time and I accidentally skipped the torture scene, fuuuuuuck! So I went straight to youtube to watch it.

Max Payne 3 is kinda the opposite, problem with that was because there were so many of them and often really long, I also hated turning the game off cause I knew I would have to rewatch the last cutscene most likely

absolutely.

unless ive seen the cutscene just minutes beforehand due to bad checkpointing and having the watch the cutscene again, then yeah, i always watch the cutscenes.

also, i think a new standard needs to be allowing you to PAUSE cutscenes. like hitting start, pausing the cutscene and its like "Start to resume" "X to skip" or whatever.
i can't count the amount of times im playing a game and a big story thing happens so theres this really intense important cutscene and then i get a damn phonecall so i instictively hit start to pause the thing and end up skipping it, then it autosaves and i have to reload the last hard save or redo the entire level or something.

I never skip them first time through. Ill skip them second time or if im replaying a section due to my lack of skill.

My big problem is skipping dialog if subtitles are on. I irritate myself no end doing that...yet i cant stop.

Almost always. Valkyria Chronicles tested my patience at times, but a games story has to be really inconsequential or really terrible for me to skip any of it. Maybe something like a Puzzle Quest would be an example.

Yes, including MG's. I will however stop if too inane, and usually the whole game is lost to me.

Depends on the game, I play JRPGs a lot; sometimes I walk into another room if a cutscene is exceedingly laborious. There's only one cutscene I skipped outright since the game was way overdoing an upcoming incredibly obvious twist and it got too damn annoying; can't remember which game it was at this point. On runs through DMC4 after the first I skipped every cutscene except this one:

at one point i would have said always but the faux bad-assery of a lot of western characters nowadays is all kinds of dumb in a way i cant get behind anymore.

ridiculous japanese shit i can usually just laugh at and accept it for how dumb it is but i think the western action stuff kind of leaves me bummed out and maybe hits too close to home in regards to things i get bugged about in pop culture.

How could you skip on the first playthrough without at least giving the game a chance to show you what it offers?

One exception I can think of might be racing and sports games where you just want to get into the match.

Those are part of the game so I need to watch them, if not then that probably means it's a terrible game anyway and I wouldn't keep playing it

I almost always skip cutscenes because games are not the sole forms of media that I consume. If I am looking for story I open up a book or watch an HBO-style show. When I am playing a game I want to play a game.

of course I do on first playthroughs, they are the reward for finishing whatever task you just did.

Usually do on additional playthroughs as well
