I always have loved opening that newest "must-have"  system on launch day and seeing shiny pristine plastic staring back at me. (Not to mention that smell that comes with everything new). To go along with that I have always tried to keep my systems in great condition and clean them regularly so they look like they just came out of the box. Its amazing how much dirt and dust can settle in a few months.
For example my original xbox hasn't been used much since I got my 360 and I honestly forgot about  it sitting under my TV unhooked for 2 years.  Today I thought I might as well clean the damn thing and see if it looks any better. The next two images show before and after.

So am I the only person out there who does stuff like this o-O? Or do you do it to? I guess video game culture has always been thought of as messy. Is this true or not?

I clean all my electronic stuff pretty regularly.  Especially white stuff like the Dreamcast and 360 controllers, they start to look gross after a while.

Some dusting (particularly around the fan) and clean the controllers to remove any grime or icky build ups dead skin. It's all part of general maintenance really.

Whenever the cords and stuff get too messy, I'll tidy everything up. That includes cleaning the consoles hooked up to the television... all 11 of them.

Sometimes, yes. The 360 doesn't seem to show dust and dirt nearly as bad as the Xbox or PS2 so I don't have to clean it up too much.

But I clean them everynow and then, just a quick wipe to get the dust off, nothing special.

@Shindiggah: I clean my genesis frequently too. The only retro system that is a pain  for me is my SNES because it yellowed now and looks awful. I guess once the plastic gets to a certain age you can't do anything about it. At least if your Genesis does die on you you can get a replacement cheap enough. (Just bought a model 1 sytem off eBay for $9.99 last week)

Not really, my Xbox doesn't really accumulate any dust whilst it is on my desk. If I'm cleaning the stands around my TV(s), I'll clean any of the consoles that are on those stands.

I usually do a once over top cloth dusting daily, or at least before I go to turn it on.

Those grooves on the Xbox 1 really do collect dust, a few years back I took some of that off with a qtip, but it was nowhere near perfect.

Yes reguarly, I also clean the inside with a mini vac on ocassion. On my retro consoles I put full factor sun block on some to prevent yellowing, PCengine, Super Famicom, Dreamcast and Gameboy are all prone, but UVA block keeps them looking new,

The week after I bought my 360 Elite one of my kids managed to get mashed potato all over it, pretty sure some of it's still in there. The way I see it, I own a 360, there's nothing that a bit of mashed potato can do to it that isn't gonna happen anyway.

I remember reading an article where a dude's console broke, and due to the amount of dust, the warranty was void. So yes, I do clean my consoles =)

Yea, it's probably wise to give it a good clean before sending a console in for repair as standard, otherwise they can screw you over.

Interesting you should ask. My ORIGINAL xbox failed , recently, after seven years of faithful service. When I  opened it up to move it's save-loaded  hard-drive to another xbox, much to my surprise, there was absolutely no dust inside! The idea that these systems are dust vacuums seems largely a myth.

I used to clean them a lot more than I do now. My 360 is the only console I keep out now. I have my Wii boxed up in my closet, and my PS2 is stored in a cabinet underneath my TV. My 360 is always dirty when I take it out of my brother's room, and that happens so regularly that I don't even really bother cleaning it anymore. I might wipe the dust off with my hand, but that's pretty much it, unless I'm cleaning my room and TV and such.

I used to use q-tips to clean those ridges around my original Xbox, and back then my room was more presentable so I liked to keep all that stuff in tip-top shape.

I used to clean my N64 because crumbs always made their way into the damn cartridge slot (not mention the cartridges themselves). But otherwise, no, I can't say I do.

Nah, I disinfect my controller after being sick but that's about it. A friend of mine was fixing another friend's 360 (he got the RROD) and the thing was LOADED with dust.

not cleaning my controllers and consoles regularly in the past has taught me that they get pretty gross if you neglect them in the cleanliness department. So I clean my consoles and disinfect/clean my controllers about once a month now.

I clean my consoles when they start looking exceptionally dirty but I should probably clean them more often. I miss my fresh-out-of-the-box super shiny Wii.

I'll dust off my consoles if I notice that they're dirty. Otherwise I leave them alone, aside from the one time I spilled a drink on my GameCube and had to clean that up.
