i'd say no
Do you COLLECT videogames? (Gaming Question of the Day 9-6-10)
Do you collect videogames like you'd collect comics or coin?. Do you consider yourself a videogame 'collector'.
It's a resounding yes for me. I love to collect games and will buy a game just to have it in my collection, even if I plan on never playing it. I also go for rare games and the like. A few quick standouts: EarthBound, Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan (Boxed with instructions, Game Boy), A complete Virtual Boy set with 9 complete games, Arc the Lad Collection (complete), an NES2, Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy Adventure (Game Boy), complete. A complete Mario Paint (complete), Alundra (PS1), The Typing of the Dead (Dreamcast) in perfect mint condition, about 10 complete Intellivision games (boxes and instructions) and many, many others.
ideally I would have been collecting years ago but to be honest I never thought games would turn into the medium they are today, hindsight is...
Ok so I would like to say why I said no.. because if you like at my goals of life lists :P (Like Sega saturn games) you can see I have a crap load of games. And the reason being is I love video games but I don't actually commit to collecting them, just buying the ones that interest me. And all that accumulates to my large large "collection" or "games on shelves" having a collection is just a term but collecting is a bit different. I was in a phase of memorabilia collecting but after wards that faded away. And I have Earthbound, Virtual boy with Wario Land, Telroboxer and Jack Bros. Alundra, Typing of the dead (not mint) no Intellivision games but Final Fantasy Aventure 1 and complete boxed N64 games. Many JAP Saturn games, FAMICOM/GAMECUBE controler, Panzer Dragoon Saga and lot's of more in demand stuff. So would I be labeled as a collector? I dunno. But as far as I'm concerned N.O
" If buy collecting, you mean keeping every game you buy, then yes ;) "Yeah I use to trade in a lot of games when I was younger but now I like to keep all the ones I buy on the shelf (money in the bank will stop the trading itch I find.)
I collect sure, but in my own special way.
I own different versions of Bioware games (ME1, ME1 CE, ME1 Classic, ME1 PC, etc) and games that were personal favorites I have on a shelf displayed.
To really collect videogames would be way too expensive and in my eyes not worth it.
A part of me keeps thinking that the CD's will one day stop working, cartridges might have a longer lifeline.
I dont collect games.
when a new generation of consoles come out I sell my games except my favorites.
Yes, but it's totally unintentional. I have tons of unfinished games.
I keep fooling myself that I'm going to have enough time to finish a game, so I go ahead and buy them on day 1. Play them for a bit and then my adult life gets in the way, meaning full seasons of shows in Netflix and sometimes work :)
Yes I do.
Got most systems I would want (except neo geo. damn expensive) and I buy a bunch of stuff off eBay more or less twice a month.
I've only done this for about 1 year but I all ready have some cool stuff going on.

"I would still count that as you being a collector, even if you do it in your own way. That's funny about the Mass Effect games! :D
In my opinion it's not necessarily how much it's worth, it's just the satisfaction of adding new games to my collection and being proud of what I own. That's why I enjoy collecting. It's fun and it adds another dimension to my hobby IMHO.

" I have about 870 of these things, whether they be cartridges, cd's, dvd's or code on my hard drive. So yes, I am a collector. :) And I have the urge to "complete"my collection all the time, so once again: Yes. :) "Wow! I've never had the urge to really "complete" a collection, I just do it for fun. I think the closest thing for me would be to complete my Virtual Boy set and get ahold of every game. Considering I have a few Japanese and one "original" that's worth a couple thousand. ;)
" No, I buy games that I want to play. "This. And that includes my copy of Snatcher. I keep what I play and trade in what I don't.
" Do you mean collecting in a "I buy games just to put them on a shelf and maybe sell them in the future, when the price has gone up" way or in a "I collect games so that I can play them" way. "My questions are not so regid. It's up to you how you want to answer it so I'd say yes to both. So yes, you are a collector. I'm asking if you consider yourself to be a collector. I gave the reason I consider myself to be one. But a collector is different than a "collection". I don't collect movies but I have a small "collection" of them. That would be a difference in which case I'd say "No. I'm not a movie collector".
If you mean NES etc then no.
However all my games are in mint condition and if I can I buy the collectors edition. So in the future, yes.
" @Icemael said:Then your poll is messed up. Everyone needs to know what they're voting for. If you're using that definition then wouldn't you think that a game forum would only answer 100%?" Sort of? I never buy games just to have them in my collection though. I only buy games I want to play.
Yeah, I buy a lot of crap and never get rid of any of it. I have a large backlog of GameCube and PlayStation 2 games that I'll probably never finish, but it doesn't matter too much. I just like having them.
I don't go out of my way to own every cool piece of retro I can find and stuff like that but I keep everything I buy (almost) and through the years that had resulted in that I own over 300 games on different plattforms, from Commodore to Playstation 3. So I have a nice collection but don't spend crazy money just to own specific games/consoles.
And people will eventually die."A part of me keeps thinking that the CD's will one day stop working, cartridges might have a longer lifeline. "
We shouldn't keep our minds on that for long, as everything in life is brief. We have to enjoy while we can. :p
I do collect to some extent, but only the games that i'll play. Games that hold no interest for me are sold or given to other people.
Only sort of. Now I still have NES genesis/Sega CD SNES carts and stuff. In terms of buying just to have, no. I buy things that I intend on playing and keep them, even if its an old game. I do try to serch out for a few games that I wouldn't mind getting a hold of. I guess I'm more of a quality over quantity kinda guy.
Not really though I do still own a SNES but I do still do enjoy playing some Tetris Attack and it is still the best version of TMNT; Turtles in Time (The XBLA/PSN version sucked ass).
If I have a game that suddenly becomes worth more then I paid for it. I did that with Diablo (the crappy PS1 Port), Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, Ehergeiz, Evil Dead, Vampire Hunter D, Tomba 1 and 2, and Final Fantasy Tactics. With the exception of Tomba and FFT I kind of had shitty taste in games when I owned a PS1.
Right you are in any other case, but I don't like to collect stuff that will one day (meaning in my lifetime) will break on me and be worthless.
Not everything breaks within my life time ;)
Besides, I'm glad I still have my old X-box, if anyone tries to break into my house it will substitute nice for a sledgehammer.
