Anime is for jerks
Do you guys watch anime and if so what interested you first video games or anime?
I personally started as a video gamer before I got into anime. I started to get into anime towards the end of high school, but got really into it once I got to college. A thing that I noticed is that most of the people in my anime club at college are both video gamers and anime enthusiasts , thus my reasoning for this question. I wanted to see if this idea applied to a wider audience than my anime club and if more anime lovers play video games or if more video gamers watch anime.
Yeah, I watch it. I got into video games first, though, and I didn't realize what anime was until a few years after, since alot of the stuff I watched on Toonami WAS anime.
Video games before anime.
I've seen a lot of anime over the years, but at some point I've started hating it. Every show is the same shit over and over again. And what the fuck is up with all the sexual references? It's like watching soft-core porn almost. Only with <16 year old girls. It makes me sick. This, and most of the action series are aimed at young boys. Like Naruto. A 5 year old "ninja" with blond hair, an orange suit and a personality that would be better suited someone in kindergarden. It's so stupid I don't even know where to start. Or Bleach, .... Fuck it. Fuck them all to hell.
That said, there are a few gems out there, but I don't reccomend anyone them.
I used to watch anime when I was younger but there's only been a couple that've really stood out such as Dragonball Z and Full Metal Alchemist. I'm just not interested in it anymore due to the fact that every anime seems to look and feel the same as the last one. They're all very generic save for a few. Oh, I got in to video games long before I watched anime.
It's kind of hard for me to remember, but I think I was interested in anime first, if only for the simple reason that there were very few video games around when I became aware of either. I started watching anime, although it wasn't called that back then, sometime in 1978 I'm guessing which was also about the time I was first introduced to games. And, while I recieved a home-console Super PONG system that year, the adventures of G-Force were much more entertaining to my young mind than a bouncing white ball on a TV screen. Later, when the 2600 came into my life, things flipped around. Admittedly, the only anime that was to be seen on TV in those days was Robotech, so video games didn't have much competition. Years have past and I still play games and watch anime. Both mediums have changed greatly since my first introduction, and I love them equally today.

NARUTO and BLEACH. More than shonen in the world of anime.
I was into Video Games wayyy before I decided that not all Anime is flashy nonsense or pretentious crap (only most of it is).
Yeah sorry for not getting back to my own topic for a while, had to wax my truck -_-'
Good to see that anime is watched by more people than I thought. For the guys who don't like anime, you have to remeber that most of us are not the target audience. Anime is made for a Japanese market so some of the cultural aspects may see strange to other cultures. This idea both pisses me off and entertains me. At times I'm like hey I just learned something, while other times I think wtf is up with all the damn stories being about high school students. There are a lot of wtf moments in anime but it's all subjective on rather or not you enjoy it.
@rokkis:
Don't base all anime off of naruto and bleach. Those are actually examples of how anime can be done wrong. Having half the series as filler does not make for a good show. Try watching stuff like Cowboy Beebop, GTO (where I got my avatar from), Full Metal Panic!, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ah! My Godess, I could list more but I think this is a decent list for recomendations. @AgentJ:
Good to hear that people are still getting into GTO. It's my favorite series because of it's sick and twisted take on the "feel good/ everyone ends up happy in the end" story.
@PenguinDust:
That's cool that you're still into both. I'm jelous that you got to experience the clasics of video games and anime as they came out back in the day. If only I were a few years older :/
I've literally been playing video games for longer than I can remember. There are baby pictures of me holding controllers.
I watch some anime I guess (started in my teens) but it has nothing to do with video games for me. This seems like a weird question.

Same thing with video games and any other form of entertainment
Oh, my bad - I skimmed that post the first time.
Yeah, I guess they (anime and games) do seem to share a large part of their audiences now that I think of it.
@s3ank1m:
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Dude, vaginas? Way overrated.

It's all good. You just summed up what I was trying to find out. Asking this question on the message board I made for my anime club wouldn't produce good results, I already know most of the members play some form of video games.
" @rokkis said:Indeed. Here's my MAL if you're interested." @PowerSerj said:Same thing with video games and any other form of entertainment "" @rokkis said:It was just a two examples. I was into games long, long before I watched any anime. But I have seen a few.....other than the obvious inclusions of Pokemon, Digimon, and Dragonball Z when I was very young, I recently watched Karas (great, violent stuff that takes itself seriously, looks beautiful, is action-packed and has no damn deformed segments), and have been watching Casshern (also beautiful and full of action. Though it is melodramatic and has a few annoying characters).
I don't care that much for anime. I appreciate the quality stuff, but, like ballet, it just don't interest me much.
That's an impresive list, I still have a while till I get through that many series. You're absolutely right there are a lot of bad series, but fortunately I've had a pretty good streak with the seires I've watched over the summer. There's been like two bad apples in my list of like 10+ series.
I hope no one's taking that quote from Jeff in any sort of serious manner, because... well...
If you ever want to get into Anime there are obviously many genre's and tastes. However I can be pretty confident that if you like games, you will want to start with the following movies:
Fist of the North Star - Wait.. he punches someone, and their head explodes? Yes please.
Ninja Scroll - Movie is setup exactly like an action game. Underlings -- Mini bosses -- Big Boss
Notice I said movies, not the series of them. Someone who is more informed can correct me.. I belive they are called OEM's? or something like that...?
Back in the day, I used to watch Captain Tsubasa, Speed Racer and G-Force. Never knew that the last 2 were Japanese until I was 18.
I dont see whats the problem with some dudes and anime. I would bet my hairy butt that those same guys go later to watch one of the crappy reality shows on TV, or girly stuff as OC, etc.

I'm in the same boat about not knowing that speed racer was Japanese for a long time. I also agree with you that I can't see a reason for anyone to really dislike anime. It's like any other media, it covers a huge amount of topics/demographics so there has to be at least one series for everyone. If you can't find at least one then you're just being too picky.
