I downloaded it off the Wii shop and can't decide if it sucks or not. I think the mechanics are neat, but I just don't care for the tone. Also I'm stuck in the first town so maybe I just suck at the game?

It probably would have been a better poll if I asked people if they liked Majora's Mask instead of whether it sucked or not. As many have said there really isn't a bad Zelda game. Except the CD-i ones.

It's not for everyone, But i would say it most certainly does not fit the criteria of a bad game.

#4 Posted by TehFlan (1944 posts) -

Majora's Mask is weird, but great.

#5 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19329 posts) -

No, best Zelda game next to Wind Waker.

This poll has 72 hours remaining.

Also, I think it's pretty darn good. Not my favorite, but still good.

@AcidBrandon18:

Read about what you're trying to do in the game. It's an odd game. There only one town and multiple little hubs and houses. If I remember right there's a chain of events you have to go through to start the game. Find some kids who want to play hide and seek to start the chain of events.

By the way, the answer is no the game doesn't suck. I really like it but it's not your average Zelda game. Take that for what it's worth. I love the fact that it is so different. Plus the tone is perfect. Reliving armageddon every three days is really fun and adds a sense of desperation and pressure to the goals you have to reach.

Majora's Mask is definitely a departure from the typical RPG. The whole Groundhog Day element of it might be hard to grasp and get used to in terms of making actual progress despite going forward and backwards through time, but once you get used to it, it can be a magnificent experience. This game also has some of my favorite side quest lines in all of video games including my all-time personal favorite, the side quest concerning Kafei and Anju -- it succeeds at becoming emotionally involving.

It definitely doesn't suck, it just has a lot of unique aspects that might be difficult to grasp head on. Personally, it's my all time favorite Zelda game.

I love it. I think a lot of people find it to be more difficult than it actually is because they initially have some trouble wrapping their head around the time travel mechanic. Admittedly it does kind of presume a lot of foreknowledge or otherwise copious experimentation in order for you to figure out what to do next, so if that's not your thing then I suggest you use a walkthrough for everything but the dungeons.

MM is a flawed game, but it is no way a bad game. I don't really like it, but I understand why some people do. It is one of those games that simply isn't for everyone.

#11 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

Hell no!

#12 Posted by Milkman (16667 posts) -

I wouldn't say it sucks but I'm not a fan.

#13 Posted by fRAWRst (236 posts) -

its my favorite zelda game

completely different tone, thought process, and really fleshes out characters as oppose to oot being quite bland

#14 Posted by TooWalrus (13169 posts) -

The work is half done, I really want them to bring MM to the 3DS, I'd love to play through it there for the first time.

From everything I've heard, MM is pretty great.

#15 Posted by ShaggE (6421 posts) -

I dislike Zelda, but I keep meaning to play MM. I'm fascinated by the conceit.

#16 Posted by davidwitten22 (1708 posts) -

It's the one that I needed the most help from friends and guides with (dem masks get confusing by the end), but I enjoy it a lot.

#17 Edited by EerieTraveler (36 posts) -

From what I've noticed, the first cycle tends to throw people off with Deku Link and the time limit. It's made readily apparent that it's not just gonna be OoT all over again and I remember that being discouraging at first. But once you get past the beginning stages and into the meat of the game, it gets quite good. Great blend of traditional Zelda dungeons and a focus on side-quests.

Is there something in particular about the tone of the game that's nagging you?

#18 Posted by iam3green (14390 posts) -

no, it's not a bad game. i enjoyed it.

#19 Posted by Dixavd (1353 posts) -

No of course it doesn't. Even Jeff who repeatedly says he hates it and thinks it is the worst Zelda game still gave it an 8.3 when it came out.

#20 Posted by AcidBrandon18 (728 posts) -

@EerieTraveler: I guess it's just the darker tone. I need to give it another shot one of these days.

#21 Posted by John_Lawlz (110 posts) -

The results give me faith in humanity.

#22 Posted by EerieTraveler (36 posts) -

@AcidBrandon18: Yea, like others have said, it's not for everyone. Some people don't necessarily want a "darker" Zelda. To each his own, I suppose.

Seriously though, Majora's Mask is an excellent game.
#24 Posted by llamaegg (226 posts) -

I might get some flack for this, but I still honestly think Majora's Mask is the best of the series, I was blown away when I originally got it upon release when I was a kid!

And god's know I still love the world of it.

#25 Posted by superfunhappygun (85 posts) -

It's one of my favourite games ever and that's not something I say lightly.

#26 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11629 posts) -

Tried playing it again a few years ago and still couldn't do it. While I don't think its necessarily a bad game per se, I think you people are goddamn crazy when you say it's your favorite. Maybe I'll have to put it in my N64 again at some point and try again...

It is by no means a bad game and deserves its praises.

#28 Posted by C2C (855 posts) -

I did not like the game, but I immensely respect it and don't consider it a bad game. It's one of the few times where I don't know if the branding works exceedingly against or for the game. The style of graphics and Nintendo's penchant for releasing friendly games do not prepare you to go into that game. However I will say that the tone goes way darker than anything Nintendo has ever released since and people do not see that dark a tone coming.

#29 Posted by supermonkey122 (816 posts) -

How the fuck could you even ask a question like that?

#30 Posted by Akeldama (4244 posts) -

No.

#31 Posted by TwoLines (2803 posts) -

So... You're asking strangers on the internet to form your own opinion? You either like it or you don't. I like crappy games, for me they certainly do not suck, but some people think they do.

I don't care for Zelda games, but I've heard interesting things about Majora, so I'm going to check it out at some point. If it's different enough, I might even like it.

#32 Posted by DualFayte (128 posts) -

I think not, I mean, it's different as far as Zelda games go but I'm a fan. Just doesn't fly with some people I guess

#33 Posted by Nottle (1912 posts) -

Its different, but thats not a bad thing. The thing I always liked about it was how so much was hidden. There were a lot of easter eggs in that game depending on the time of day and what mask you wore, and the 3 day mechanic was pretty cool in my opinion.

I agree!

#35 Posted by Jaqen_HGhar (884 posts) -

It is one of the best, if not the best, Zelda games ever made for me. So no, it doesn't suck.

And you just need to pay more attention I guess. I had some trouble getting out of the starting town the first time I played it as well, mostly because I was 13 when it came out and my English wasn't really all that back then. But despite that I played it enough to get all the masks. And then some.

#36 Posted by Tim_the_Corsair (3065 posts) -

I never got very far in it, but I still appreciate what it did.

#37 Posted by big_jon (5723 posts) -

No Zelda game "sucks", at worst it's just not great.

#38 Posted by Novis (104 posts) -

This has been said, but I would like to reiterate that it's great game because of the time constraints. Trying to get was much done in three days can take some planning and a bit of trial and error. THere were points in the third day that I began to sweat it because I wasn't sure if I was going to make it in time to finish certain quest. Not to mention the tone is just too great to pass up.

#39 Posted by OneManX (1686 posts) -

I dont know if time has changed people's opinion of the game, b/c I remember a lot of people hating this game when it came out. I played it... and it was strange, the time mechanic was cool, but i felt like it never explained what was going on. You need a walkthrough just to get going, but I do remember getting the hang of it as it went on.

I'm kinda blown away by people saying it's one of the best Zelda games... cuz I remember the same reactions to Wind Waker, people started cold on that one, then people just turned around on that game, calling it the best in the series!

I dont think it sucks, but I think it's... okay.

#40 Posted by SlapHappyJesus (120 posts) -

It's my personal favorite of the series.

Great sense of atmosphere.

Goododd.

Love it. Not my favorite since that belongs to wind waker, but definitely up there in the list of favorite zelda games.

#43 Posted by claudius (185 posts) -

It's possibly my favorite Zelda game, either that or Wind Waker. I can't decide.

#44 Posted by RecSpec (3803 posts) -

I actually like it more than Ocarina.

Its a lot darker than ocarina and and having the aspect of a timer on top of things surely turn some people away but, I still love this game for the same reasons, it give the game a unique feeling. I remember the first time the moon was about to fall there was a real sense of fear in me as I wanted to run away yet I knew it was hopeless, seeing how the most of the people reacted to impending doom made the world in Majoras Mask feel alive. I will say some things are not to obvious in the beginning but once you figure them out its a great game. I love it so much I still to this day come back to it.

For similar reasons, Pikmin 1 was great. Time management actually mattered, and created some great moments of tension.

Pikmin 2 fucked that up by removing the time constraint, which was really the only thing that was remotely challenging in the game. Without the time constraint, victory is inevitable and you can be as leisurely as you want.

Majora's Mask, save for one dungeon towards the end (I vaguely remember it being a sort of square with a big hole in the middle, if anyone can remember details I'd appreciate it), is the most inventive, unique, and brilliant Zelda game there has ever been.

#49 Posted by GnomeonFire (716 posts) -

I never cared for it as much as other Zelda games, but it is good.

#50 Posted by ZOnikJJ (258 posts) -

Best Zelda game.
