Yes, it's an all new sequel, with all of the levels new ones, and even more of them than the DS game.
 
If you had the DS game, you could tell from the start it's a new game. You can only be confused if you didn't play the original. Just like you can easily confuse any other game from a sequel in the same generation.

In his defence, they really didn't make it clear that it's all new content. I'll admit that I thought it was just a port with perhaps a few new co op levels (thus the levels shown I hadn't seen before). Proving that New Super Mario Brothers Wii is an awful name.
